CHESTER/SAXTONS, CLAREMONT, NEWPORT AND SUNAPEE WINNERS IN CRVBL WEEK 2

There’s now a three-way tie atop the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League after the Chester/Saxtons River Crush, the Claremont Cardinals, Newport Polar Bears and Sunapee Old Lakers were winners in the season’s second week of town team action.

Chester/Saxtons River started off the weekend with a 5 – 1 victory over the Walpole Wild Blue at the baseball complex in Walpole. Nick Wirkkala of the Crush went six innings on the mound, giving up just three hits and striking out seven. He was also 1 for three at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base. Scott Renfro went 3 for 4 with an RBI double, Toby Miller also went 3 for 4 scoring two runs and Jamie Spence had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. For Walpole, Blake Gowen was 2 for 3 and Frank Brown pitched six innings, giving up just two earned runs.

At Dummerston Field, defending CRVBL champion Claremont broke open a scoreless game in the sixth inning when Josh Duford walked, Nate Duford singled and Andrew Sullivan’s Sacrifice fly put the Cardinals on the Board. The final score was 7-0.
Claremont’s Jon Nicholas pitched eight innings for his second win of the year. Brattleboro’s Greg Elbaum went the distance pitching for the River Rats.

Also at Dummerston, the Newport Polar Bears scored in the first, fourth, fifith and eighth innings to edge the Putney Fossils, 7-6. Putney’s Steve Stanley went two for three with an RBI for the host team.

In Sunapee, the league’s newest team picked up their first ever win as the Old Lakers beat the Keene Black Dawgs, 4-3. Sunapee shortstop Jake Stout went 3 for 4 with a pair of stolen bases and second baseman Mike Saindon had two hits and two RBI.

Next weekend’s CRVBL action begins on Saturday, may 4 in Walpole as the Wild Blue Host Claremont at 1:00. On Sunday the 5th, Chester/Saxtons River play a doubleheader at Vermont Academy starting at 11., Newport hosts Brattleboro at 11, and Keene hosts Putney at Marlborough Field at 11.
