Cause: Under investigation at the time of the writing

Action Taken/Details: Central Dispatch received a call at 4:40am from public works personnel reporting a fire at 176 Canal Street. Upon arrival of the 1st engine at 4:45 the Captain reported heavy smoke showing from attic and ordered a 2nd alarm. A second alarm brings all Brattleboro personnel and apparatus to the scene. The building was being evacuated on our arrival. A hose line was stretched up the interior stairway to the 3rd floor attic area and the fire was contained to the attic and roof. Fire crews searched the entire building to ensure that all occupants were out and that the fire had not extended to other floors. The fire was under control at 05:36.

The contents of the attic area were destroyed and the attic and roof area received moderate damage. The two apartments below received minor water damage. The Red Cross is assisting the occupants of the apartments with housing until the building electrical system can be checked. There were no injuries. Assisting at the scene were Keene Fire Department, Brattleboro Police, Rescue Inc, Central Dispatch, Water Department, Red Cross and Green Mountain Power. The fire is under investigation by the Brattleboro Fire Department Investigation Team but does not appear to be suspicious.
