Sanders Statement on Republican Blocking Consideration of Amendment

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), cosponsor of constitutional amendment to reverse Supreme Court rulings that lifted limits on campaign spending by millionaires and billionaires, issued the following statement today after Senate Republicans voted to block consideration of the amendment:

“I am extremely disappointed that not one Republican voted today to stop billionaires from buying elections and undermining American democracy. While the Senate vote was a victory for Republicans, it was a defeat for American democracy. The Koch brothers and other billionaires should not be allowed to spend hundreds of millions of dollars electing candidates who represent the wealthy and the powerful. The fight to overturn Citizens United must continue at the grassroots level in every state in this country.”

  • Article V Constitutional Convention

Of course Congress didn’t vote to overturn the unlimited spending by the richest 1% on our political process. Too many in Congress have been corrupted by the influence of those dollar bills flowing into their campaign coffers.

The only way we can break free from the Oligarchy that has taken over our country, and reclaim Democracy with free and fair elections, is by using the one tool our forefathers gave us to us specifically for this purpose! When our government has become too corrupt, We, the People, must exercise our civic duty via an Article V Constitutional Convention. Those that claim this process could “run away” and lead to small interest groups mangling our government really don’t know what they’re talking about. In all our US History, no group has ever managed to “run away” with our country via an Article V CC. In fact, it take such an enormous effort to really make it work, that it needs the consensus of the vast majority of Americans, and at least 34 states, to agree.

Currently, two states (VT first, of course, then CA) have now put forth resolutions to overturn the SCOTUS decision, Citizen’s United, and to limit campaign spending. These state resolutions were made possible because of the people in each state that worked so hard to make it a reality. These people are volunteers with wolf-pac.com (an organization with one sole mission and purpose: overturning Citizens United with this Convention of the States). There are now 20 other states in the process of making similar resolutions become reality.

How are they doing it? simple. In our local communities we still have influence over our politicians; they still need our votes because Koch dollars haven’t managed to make it in all their coffers yet. As a result, when we start calling our representatives locally and telling them what we want, they are more likely to listen and respond accordingly to our demands. We can sit down with them and outline why this issue matters, and show them the numbers that prove that the majority of their very own constituents want this to happen.

In turn, those reps will bring it to the state level. When a resolution is introduced, we can be there, in numbers, and demand time to speak about why it matters to us.

In other words, Democracy is still working on the local level.
