Waite was brought to Brattleboro by the 10 o’clock train on Wednesday morning, by Deputy Marshal Sprague, to testify in the several cases now pending before the commissioners against his estate in insolvency. He walks the streets in company with the deputy-marshal with all his old-time air of enjoyment and careless indifference. Whatever else may be the matter with him Waite evidently is not a prey to remorse and compunction for his sins and crimes.

The Brattleboro Selectboard held a special meeting to hear Town Manager Peter Elwell discuss the progress made on Community Safety Review Committee recommendations.
In observance of Labor Day, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, September 6, 2021, with the exception of emergency services.
Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday, September 5, and Monday, September 6. All other violations will be enforced.
The Brattleboro Planning Commission will meet on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 6:00 pm in the Hanna Cosman Room at the Brattleboro Municipal Center (230 Main Street). The public is encouraged to participate in the meeting over Zoom. The Municipal Center will be open to the public with limited seating spaced six feet apart and face coverings will be required in the meeting. The agenda contains information on how to access the meeting remotely, including the required “passcode.”
As we near the 2021 Vermont AFL-CIO Annual Convention (September 18 & 19 at Jay Peak, Northeast Kingdom) I again ask our 11,000+ Union members to support the full United! slate in our internal elections, including Ron Schneiderman (UFCW) for VP At-Large, Danielle Bombardier (IBEW) for Secretary-Treasurer, Dwight Brown (AFSCME) for Executive Vice President, and myself, David Van Deusen (AFSCME) for re-election to the office of President of our State Labor Council.
Since United! took power in 2019 (and again swept elections in 2020) we have transformed the Vermont AFL-CIO into the most progressive State Labor Council in the United States. Join the Windham County No Más Polimigra campaign and Migrant Justice for an on-line information session on loopholes in the county’s Fair and Impartial Policing Policy that allow the Sheriff’s Department to collaborate with federal immigration authorities–and what we can do to close those loopholes. We will be joined by a farmworker from Migrant Justice who will talk about why this is important to the human rights of their community and we’ll hear about how this affects our local asylum seekers. The Selectboard will be participating in this meeting via Zoom and also encourages the public to participate via Zoom. The physical location of this meeting will be the Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center (230 Main Street). There will be limited public seating. Seats will be spaced six feet apart. Everyone in the room will be required to wear face coverings. The Board will convene at 5:30pm and is expected to immediately enter into executive session to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee and to discuss labor relations with employees. The Board will reconvene after the executive session and immediately adjourn. No action will be taken.

The Whetstone Pathway Bridge connecting the Whetstone Pathway and the Preston Lot on Flat Street has been reopened. The retaining wall has been replaced and the bridge has been reset. There is more restoration work on the bridge and electrical work on the Pathway remaining.

In observance of the Rosh Hashanah holiday, the previously scheduled Tuesday, September 7, 2021, Brattleboro Selectboard Regular Meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at 6:15pm.

I am not a military strategist. I am not a diplomat and I make no claim to knowing anything about how to end a war. I do possess a functioning level of common sense and I use that as a guide to try to understand the events that have unfolded in the last few weeks as the United States withdraws its troops from Afghanistan.
Most estimates indicate that over 80,000 people have been evacuated from Afghanistan as the Taliban seize complete control of the country. I have to wonder what the American evacuees were thinking over the past year or so when it became clear that the United States was on the brink of pulling all of its troops out of Afghanistan.
The members of the Agenda Subcommittee are hereby notified and warned to meet in the Hannah Cosman Room of the Brattleboro Municipal Center at 8:00 AM to consider the articles listed below.
