Starting Sunday, June 22, the  Brattleboro Music Center will be hosting a 2-week a cappella workshop for teens.  The workshop is led by Keira Carmichael and Riley Goodemote; and focuses on Collegiate Style a cappella arrangements of traditional & popular music, beat boxing and more

Overview:

A fun and musically educational co-ed a cappella camp for teens ranging in age from 13 to 19.  The workshop will cover basic a cappella theory and beat boxing skills.  Participants will prepare at least 5 to 6 songs for live performance. Focus will also be placed on building skills that give students the independence to begin their own groups and lead rehearsals.

Again we are reminded that one of the worst nuisances is the man who is up at early dawn, making his lawn mower ziz, ziz, rasping the whiskers off the lawn.

I found this interesting, in that it seems to be a frequent, modern-day occurrence as well.

Rescue Inc. Hosts Open House – A Free Event for the Whole Family

BRATTLEBORO, VT—Rescue Inc. will host a community open house and barbecue on Sunday, June 22, 2014 from 11am to 2pm at Rescue Inc.’s headquarters (541 Canal Street) to celebrate nearly 50 years of serving 15 towns in Southeast Vermont and Southwest New Hampshire.

“This is a great time to get to know your emergency first responders up close and personal and see what it takes to be an emergency medical technician or paramedic,” says Drew Hazelton, chief of operations. There will be a variety of Tech Rescue demonstrations, a hi line for folks to ride, bounce house for the kids along with a coloring book station, as well as tours of the ambulances and Rescue’s headquarters. Free blood pressure checks and hands only CPR will also be available.

The Second Annual Southern Vermont Dance Festival Seeks Volunteers, Host Families and Sponsors

BRATTLEBORO, VT—As preparations heat up for this year’s Second Annual Southern Vermont Dance Festival slated to take place July 17- 20 in Brattleboro, Vermont, the organization is seeking volunteers to take care of a variety tasks from pre-event organizing to event set up and clean up to the myriad during-event activities.

Brenda Siegel, executive director of the Festival says, “the Festival couldn’t have pulled off last year’s event without the many, many wonderful volunteers who were ready to pitch in no matter what the task.

Car Keys Lost In/On West River

While tubing Monday 6/16, discovered their absence about halfway between the Dummerston Covered bridge and the remnants of the old railroad bridge (near the Irving station on Route 30).  2 car keys (for upstream and downstream cars) were double-bagged together inside 2 ziplok bags.  

If you’re swimming or kayaking in this area or downstream and see something floating (or underwater) please grab them and reply to this article…replacement keys are expensive these days, so waterlogged or not, there’ll be a reward!  Don’t divulge details of exactly what you found in your reply, though, save that for private followup for identification.

Assistance Available from New Lions Club

The Brattleboro Area Lions Club is now prepared to start taking applications for financial assistance in obtaining sight and hearing care.

The new Lions club was established and chartered this spring and has since received some donations to kick start their sight and hearing program. June 16, 2014 Emily Peyton on VPR Vermont Public Radio is famous for its political caste system, the worst discrimination in Vermont, denying political candidates equal participation in debates, and putting them in “castes” such as the major party “caste” and the minor party “caste” and the independent candidates with little money “caste”, and then  the indpendent candidate with millions of dollars “caste” which includes only U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders who receives his money from Democrats and then suddenly switches,  as if false labelling a product, to “independent” after the  Democratic Primary.

New Electric Car Charging Stations Installed in Transportation Center

Electric vehicle owners living in or visiting Brattleboro now have a new option for charging their cars. The Town of Brattleboro has installed two level 2, 100 amp electric vehicle charging stations on the first level of the Transportation Center at 77 Flat Street. There are three parking spaces reserved for charging electric cars. The State of Vermont will be installing signage directing motorists from Exits 1 and 2 to the stations. These stations are replacing an old obsolete charging station that was installed when the Transportation Center was constructed in 2003.

Dear wife,

Well, I am through the mill, and came out for a first Lieutenant. Now for the front. I have been up and seen Jacob and Dr. Bowker, etc. Heard from Zopher. Up to the 10th he is well. He is a Sergeant. I have spent the whole day at Carver and Columbia and in laying in a little paper and tobacco, had the luck to find a friend that let me have a little money. I am well, first rate. If I could only get that strap on my shoulders. You know that I should not care, if there was not such a scarcity of pennies in my pocket. I cannot describe my feelings when I heard that mother was dangerously sick. How glad I am that I had written to her. I was intending to write again as soon as I had got through my examination here, but alas, she can write no more. How sad father
must feel.

Twilight On The Tavern Lawn Presents Kat Wright and Brett Hughes June 15

Twilight Music continues its 12th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, June 15 with Kat Wright and Brett Hughes’ Americana music quartet. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 24. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, Next Stage Arts Project, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.

Weekend Concert Series: Bill Laswell – Axiom Sound System

Bill Laswell performing under his incarnation as Axiom Sound System, live in Chicago, with Material, Praxis, Pharoah Sanders, and Bootsy Collins in 2006.

Laswell was a producer /musician during the dawn of compact discs, and his name guaranteed that whatever was on his new disc would be musically interesting. He frequently threw together combinations of great musicians for specialty projects. Very unique.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – June 17, 2014

Town clerical and administrative employees have decided to unionize, and Brattleboro will be reviewing and potentially accepting a collective bargaining agreement at their next Tuesday evening.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will also start down the path toward hiring a new Chief of Police, will adjust committees and grants, approve a loan for the Brattleboro Area Farmers Market, appoint David Schoales to an action team, and more.

You can attend in person at the Municipal Center on Main Street, and bring up items not otherwise on the agenda during public participation. You ca also watch on BCTV, or follow the coverage here the day after.

Not Another Round On The Budget

According to the Brattleboro Town Clerk’s Office only 71 signatures were submitted by the 5pm deadline yesterday, in the attempt to force a reconsideration of the town’s municipal budget. 418 signatures of registered voted would have been necessary.
