The Brattleboro Selectboard held a special meeting to continue their discussion of the proposed FY2018 town budget. In the very short meeting we learned of two big announcements – a first mention of a $2 million DPW facility being pencilled in as a placeholder in the 2021 budget, and news that Brattleboro’s downtown crosswalks and intersections would be cleared of snow by the DPW this winter.
Fake news isn’t the ailment. It’s the symptom.
The problem is education. We’ve tolerated a slow slide in the quality of education over the last few decades, leaving many of our fellow citizens without the basic skills required to participate in or understand the world around them, making them vulnerable to manipulation and misdirection.
Combine that with a dizzying array of media choices and some intentional confusion injected into the system and you have a recipe for poor decision making at multiple levels. At the very least, it leaves a substantial portion of the population at the whim of whatever rumors float their way.
Today is “Giving Tuesday”. It follows “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”.

Sock a homeless person today! Brattleboro Area Jewish Community is running their first annual sock drive for the homeless this winter. Did you know that socks are the most needed and least donated item to the homeless in the winter months? Many of us don’t take the time to think about homeless people walking all day, but for the most part that is exactly what they do. It’s cold outside. They need socks.
Socks will be given out each month when BAJC serves dinner at the overflow shelter. Socks will be distributed through April of 2017.
Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present Darol Anger’s 5th Annual Keepin’ It In The Fam Holiday Show at Next Stage on Friday, December 2 at 7:30 pm. In addition to fiddler Darol Anger, the concert features banjoist Tony Trischka, singer/songwriter Emy Phelps, bassist Ethan Jodziewicz and guitarist Grant Gordy.
To celebrate the holidays, Darol Anger and Emy Phelps have gathered some of the country’s best string musicians for an evening of mythical, magical, musical mayhem. The multigenerational musical experience focuses on the spirit of midwinter and the turning of the year. Anger has a long history of organizing holiday shows, from Windham Hill Winter Solstice Concerts through Newgrange to Yulegrass, and his old friend and musical colleague, banjo genius Tony Trischka, will be on board as this year’s very most special guest. Bassist and Edgar Meyer protege Ethan Jodziewicz (Sierra Hull) and guitar wizard Grant Gordy (David Grisman Quintet) round out the band.

On Thursday, December 8th, at 5:30 pm, the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will host its annual Holiday Party at Dalem’s Chalet, 78 South Street. This is a time for people and businesses in West Brattleboro to get together socially and to celebrate the Association’s numerous accomplishments in this past year. The evening will feature a cash bar with hors d’oeuvres prepared by the restaurant. The WBA suggests a voluntary donation of $5 toward the food, although no one will be turned away.
The Brattleboro Citizen Police Communications Committee (CPCC) will meet on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 5:30pm in the Hanna Cosman meeting room at the Municipal Center.
The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Human Services Review Committee will meet on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 4:30pm in the Brattleboro Food Co-Op community room.

Vermont Jazz Center Big Band Gala with guest vocalist Wanda Houston Celebrates the Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Raises Money for Scholarship Fund
The Vermont Jazz Center will present its annual big band swing gala on Friday, December 2nd at 8:00 PM paying tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, one of the greatest jazz singers in history. The performance will celebrate Fitzgerald’s centennial birthday anniversary by featuring arrangements she performed with Count Basie, Duke Ellington and others. All proceeds will support the VJC’s Scholarship Program. The VJC Big Band is comprised of area professionals, is led by music director Rob Freeberg and administrated by band manager Sherm Fox. Acclaimed vocalist Wanda Houston will front the band for this gala performance, an annual concert that has evolved into one of the VJC’s most popular events.
The Brattleboro VFW at 40 Black Mountain Road is open to the public for lunch. Lunch is served Mon – Fri from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Specials are only $5.50 a plate. Burgers, fries, onions rings, chicken wings, soups and sandwiches are also available.

Oy Chanukah, Oy Chanukah!
Please join us for the annual BAJC Chanukah Party on Friday December 23. We will start at 5:00 pm with an hour of story and study; we’ll look at how the story of Chanukah is told in the Books of the Maccabees and after, and what it means to us now in this era of zealotry and intolerance. Then at 6:00 pm we’ll light Shabbat candles – it’s the day before Chanukah really begins, so (sadly) we won’t be lighting our Chanukiot (menorahs) this year.
We’ll sing Shabbat blessings and a Chanukah song. Then we’ll feast on latkes (potato pancakes), applesauce and sour cream, with veggies side dishes and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and chocolate gelt for dessert. After our latke feast we’ll hear and share stories of the season.

I-91
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.
To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, November 27th (Sunday after Thanksgiving) from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (I-91 will remain open). Traffic conditions on both I-91 and through the town will be monitored closely throughout the day. Should traffic congestion become an issue, the ramps may be re-opened until traffic conditions improve. This will be managed actively throughout the day until peak traffic volumes have passed.
The Brattleboro Selectboard, sans John Allen, held a special meeting regarding the FY18 budget, focusing on the numbers for the Police and Fire departments.
With no preliminary announcements, the meeting got right down to business.
Rich Holschuh returned to the Selectboard with a petition signed by 540 voters, over 5% of the registered voters in town. The petition asks to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day in Brattleboro, and for the question to be placed on the 2016 Representative Town Meeting warning for a vote.
Throw 2c of cooked & well drained black beans, 1/2 cup of cocoa powder, 1 capful of flavor extract of your choice, 1/4 c shredded coconut, 1/4 to 1/2 cup low glycemic sweetener of your choice, such as coconut nectar, into a food processor. Blend until mixture forms a ball. Form into cookies. Bake at 380 degrees for 12-15 mins.
