Brattleboro-Hinsdale Bridge Construction Update May 11

Construction Update

Brattleboro-Hinsdale

BF A004(152)

DATE: Thursday, May 11, 2023

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Intermittent flagging operations will be encountered along Vermont Route 142 from the intersection with Royal Road and north, allowing for the entering/exiting of construction equipment to the work zones. Single lane closures with one-way alternating traffic patterns will be implemented as needed. Motorists should use caution and expect minor delays in this area.

Gravel Wetland Construction

The 90 day road closure of VT 142 is scheduled to begin on May 30th. Installation of message boards and signs for the detour will begin next week. VT 142 will be closed north of the access to Royal Road to just south of the access to 28 Vernon Street.

The detour route from VT 142 will be up Cotton Mill Hill Road, left onto South Main Street, continuing onto Fairground Road, and finally back to Canal Street. A turnaround has been constructed just south of Cotton Mill Hill Rd. on VT 142 to allow vehicles with significant turning radius from the north to approach Cotton Mill Hill Rd. from the south. A three-way stop configuration will also be implemented at the Cotton Mill Hill Rd. and VT 142 intersection and there will be a reduction in speed limit to 45 mph along VT 142.

Northern MSE Wall progress.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Drainage work has begun across from Royal Road near to the Connecticut River. The northern MSE wall work continues with the placement of panels and panel straps and the southern MSE wall may begin as early as next week with related excavation and forming of the leveling pad. The gravel wetland construction continues and is awaiting the installation of a drainage structure in order to bring this work to completion.

Abutment A’s backwall is still in the process of being formed up with rebar being placed. The intermittent pounding of diesel hammers over the CT River may continue as the temporary trestle work is still ongoing. Pier 1 piles will be driven later this season.

LOCATION:

The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.

PROJECTED COMPLETION: Fall 2024.
