Brattleboro-Hinsdale Bridge – Construction Update

Construction Update

Brattleboro-Hinsdale

BF A004(152)

DATE: Thursday, June 15, 2023

TRAFFIC IMPACT: Flaggers will continue to be in place at both ends of the closure on Vermont Route 142 to assist construction vehicles into the work zone and to facilitate local traffic access to 28 Vernon Street and Royal Road as needed.

Vehicles utilizing the detour from VT 142 should continue to exercise caution on the approach to Cotton Mill Hill Road, reducing speed and remaining vigilant of new traffic patterns in this area.

Backfill/Embankment progress along VT 142

DETOUR INFORMATION: The truck detour route from VT 142 will be up Cotton Mill Hill Road, left onto South Main Street, continuing onto Fairground Road, and finally back Canal Street. Cars detouring from VT 142 should proceed up Cotton Mill Hill Rd. and make a right hand turn onto South Main St. A turnaround has been constructed south of Cotton Mill Hill Rd. on VT 142 to allow vehicles to safely navigate the corridor. A three-way stop configuration has been implemented at the Cotton Mill Hill Rd. and VT 142 intersection.

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

The contractor will continue to work on installing new drainage systems as well as removing existing pipes and structures. Backfill of this work has begun on the southern end of VT 142 and progresses north. This fill placement is the beginning of the embankment work needed to raise the road to meet the new bridge alignment. Work on the southern MSE wall continues this week with panel placement and related backfill. Abutment A’s backwall is still in the process of being formed up with rebar being placed.

The contractor and the Brattleboro Department of Public Works will continue waterline work on the south side of the project by tying in new lines to existing lines, coordinating this work with the work on drainage systems. The DPW will continue to notify clients of impacts to services in advance.

Installation of a 30″ Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) and related drainage work beginning on the eastern side of VT 142 across from the Royal Road entrance and continuing under the railroad tracks will necessitate the contractor work 24 hours a day over the weekend beginning Friday, June 23rd and ending on Sunday, June 25th. Residents in the area should expect additional light and noise to come from this location overnight on both Friday and Saturday nights. Additional traffic control measures will be in place throughout the weekend as needed to maintain access to Royal Road.

LOCATION:

The Hinsdale, NH to Brattleboro, VT bridge project will replace the existing twin truss bridges on New Hampshire Route 119 over the Connecticut River with a single, new structure approximately 1800′ long. On the Vermont side, the new structure will begin on Vermont Route 142 – about 1000′ south of the current intersection of VT 142 and NH 119. The new configuration will connect to NH 119 in New Hampshire east of the George’s Field Road/NH 119 intersection.

PROJECTED COMPLETION: Fall 2024.
