At their next meeting, the Brattleboro Selectboard will decide if the Town will be joining Bennington in a lawsuit “to recover costs and damages from manufacturers, distributers, and retailers who have profited from the sale of opioids.” Town Attorney Bob Fisher will summarize the 175 page complaint and answer questions.
Health Insurance will be renewed for 2020, winter sand and road salt will be purchased, bulletproof vests will be funded, goals will be reviewed and an update from the solid waste district will be delivered. You can deliver your own items, not already on the agenda, during public participation.
The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Human Services Review Committee will meet and hold an application informational session on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at 5:00pm, in the Hanna Cosman Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
The Brattleboro Traffic Safety Committee will meet on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at 8:00am, in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.
In observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, October 14, 2019, with the exception of emergency services.
Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, October 13 and 14, 2019. All other violations will be enforced.

Windham Solid Waste Management District (WSWMD) is hosting two household hazardous waste events on Saturday, October 19, from 8 am until noon. One event is being held at the WSWMD Transfer Station, 327 Old Ferry Road, Brattleboro; the other event is at the Stratton Transfer Station, 9 W. Jamaica Road, Stratton.
The Brattleboro Planning Commission is kicking off a 3-day interactive workshop on Thursday, October 3 with a public meeting at 7:00 pm in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center. Community members are invited to discuss ideas and share aspirations for downtown at the opening night and throughout the following days.
The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Human Services Review Committee is accepting applications for FY21 Human Services Funding. The Application, as well as Instructions and Guidelines, are posted on the Brattleboro Town website – www.brattleboro.org. The deadline to submit applications to the Brattleboro Town Manager’s Office is Monday, November 4, 2019, at 12:00noon.

The Brattleboro Selectboard learned the tales of five nearby municipal broadband projects and expressed varying levels of support for something local, along with many questions. Some answers will come at their next meeting.
The Work Today program is being delayed until spring 2020, the parking garage will get a new elevator cab, the DPW will get their generator, and the Town hopes to get some volunteers for committees.
An unusually-short agenda awaits the Brattleboro Selectboard at their next regular meeting. Short agendas sometimes imply absent board members.
They will get an update on the Work Today program at Youth Services and hear results of staff research into a potential new utility, municipal broadband. There are just two other items – buying a generator and announcing committee vacancies. You can extend this meeting by bringing up other items not on this tiny agenda during Public Participation.
The Brattleboro Tree Advisory Committee will meet on Thursday, October 3, 2019, at 6:30pm, in the Community Room at the Brattleboro Food Co-Op, located at 2 Main Street.
The Brattleboro Planning Commission is working on a Downtown Design Plan, which will describe and illustrate the community’s vision for future downtown improvements and projects. This planning process will address:
Improving routes, access and circulation for pedestrians and bicyclists;
Incorporating green stormwater practices into streets and public spaces;
Identifying opportunities for creative placemaking that use arts and cultural activities to enliven and revitalize public spaces; and
Enhancing long-term economic stability for downtown businesses.

The Brattleboro Selectboard decided once again that there is no climate emergency worth declaring. The proposed declaration was “a mess” and existing efforts were deemed ample.
The board had their expectations managed about possibilities of self governing anytime soon, budget season is lurking, and the possibility of a bike lane on Western Ave will be further investigated.
Utilities Division crews will start Fall Flushing of the Town water mains on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 10:00 p.m. and continue through Saturday, October 12, 2019
NOTE: Some daytime flushing will continue throughout the weeks of October 15th and 21st
Customers are asked to check the flushing schedule closely as flushing causes water discoloration, low water pressure and in some areas, intervals of no water.
Starting Tuesday, September 17, Northeast Paving (a contractor of the Town) will begin the paving portion of our annual capital paving project. Weather permitting, the following schedule is anticipated:

Brattleboro’s Better Block Challenge will be held this weekend (September 20-22). Debuting on Friday night and running through Sunday, residents and visitors to downtown can check out temporary installations that are designed to transform spaces in downtown into active, vibrant and safer public spaces.
Better Block activities will take place on Friday from 5 to 8, Saturday 9 to 3, and Sunday, 10 to 2. Stop by the orientation booth in the Latchis Gallery at 50 Main Street as you visit the three pop-up Better Block projects installed around downtown.
The postponed Declaration of Climate Emergency will once again be on the agenda for the Brattleboro Selectboard, but the bigger focus for the board will be town finances. There will be a review of the Long Term Financial Plan, scheduling of FY20 budget meetings, yearly and monthly financial reports, and more.
Municipal self-governance, third class liquor licenses, renewable energy projects, grants, and committee appointments will round things out. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.
