Selectboard Meeting Notes – FY23 Budget Season Begins

The Brattleboro Selectboard kicked off their FY23 budget season with an overview of the proposed town budget by Town Manager Peter Elwell. Questions were limited at this meeting, allowing the board and the public to take in a broad overview. Deep dive questions begin next week.

One of the lengthier passages in this meeting was a discussion of prepaid assigned funds compared to unassigned funds and how they both are accounted for legally and financially.

Budget season begins with an overview of the proposed budget by the Town Manager to the Selectboard, and this starts at the next regular meeting of the board.

They’ll also approve more repairs for the skating rink, increase the deductible on health insurance for town employees, review their goals, and more. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

Brattleboro Fall Paving Update

D.M.I. Paving (a contractor of the town) will be paving in various locations in the coming days. 

Wednesday, October 20th, paving will take place at Moore Court.

Thursday, October 21st, paving will take place at the intersection of Park Place and Linden Street Work is expected to happen between 10 am and 12 pm. Southbound traffic on VT Route 30 will be detoured to Cedar St. for the duration of the work. Please plan your trip accordingly.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will be approving a range of new contracts for police officers, firefighters, and other unionized employees at their next regular meeting. 

Union Station will be handed over to the BMAC, the board will hear a sustainability update, they’ll review their goals, Selectboard meetings will be moved to Central Fire Station, and more. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participations.

Yoshi Manale Selected as Brattleboro Town Manager

Brattleboro, VT—The Brattleboro Selectboard has chosen Octavian Y. (Yoshi) Manale as the
new Town Manager. Mr. Manale will assume his new responsibilities on January 1, 2022, after
working on transition matters with the retiring Town Manager, Peter Elwell.

“On behalf of the Brattleboro Selectboard, I congratulate Yoshi Manale on being selected as our new Town Manager” said Elizabeth McLoughlin, Selectboard Chair. “We considered many well qualified candidates during our nationwide search. The Selectboard conducted this process with care and diligence, and we are very pleased with the result. We are confident that Yoshi Manale has an enthusiasm for good governance and for Brattleboro that will lead us to a future that we can all embrace. Bullock Street Closure

On Wednesday, October 13, Utilities Crews will be working to repair a sink hole on Bullock ST.  The work will begin at 7:00 am and will continue through approximately noon.  

Motorists should plan to use alternate routes during this time period.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting Agenda

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 5:00pm at the Brattleboro Municipal Center (230 Main Street). The Board will convene at 5:00pm and is expected to immediately enter into executive session to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee.

Promotion of Brattleboro was a primary topic at the regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard Tuesday. Blue Whale Public Relations had some typical Zoom-related delays but otherwise gave a solid report on their early efforts to reach out to the media.

Hybrid meetings will continue for a while longer, favorable financing for the water treatment facility was announced, new stop signs are official, and Union Station might be sold for a dollar in order to save as much as $100,000.

Brattleboro Indigenous Peoples’ Day Closings

In observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, all Town offices will be closed on Monday, October 11, 2021, with the exception of emergency services. 

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, October 10 and 11, 2021. All other violations will be enforced. 

Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Sunday and Monday, October 10 and 11, 2021. 

Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Human Services Review Committee Applications Available

 The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Human Services Review Committee is accepting applications for FY23 Human Services Funding. The Application, as well as Instructions and Guidelines, are posted on the Brattleboro Town website – www.brattleboro.org. The deadline to submit applications to the Brattleboro Town Manager’s Office via e-mail is Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at 5:00pm.
