I-91

Single lane closure of the passing lane on I-91 Northbound and Southbound may begin on 9/26/13. The lane closures will remain in effect during the construction of the temporary cross-overs, but will be removed over the weekend when no workers are present.

Route 30

Speed reduction on Route 30 will be implemented lowering the speed limit through the work zone to 40 mph. The reduced speed limit will remain in effect until approximately August, 2016.

Truck activity at Route 30 will be increasing next week. Expect shoulder closures beginning Thursday 9/26. Flaggers may have to halt traffic at times to allow trucks to enter and exit the work zone.

Week of September 15, 2013

I-91 – On Thursday, September 19th and Friday, September 20th , there will short duration lane closures on I-91 Northbound and I-91 Southbound while work zone signs are installed.

Route 30 – No impacts anticipated for the week of September 15.

Upper Dummerston Road – No impacts anticipated for the week of September 15.

The public is invited to take part in a town hall meeting on revitalizing Brattleboro’s downtown. The meeting will take place on Monday, September 9th at 5 p.m. at the Latchis Theater.

Because of the hardships downtown Brattleboro suffered as a result of Tropical Storm Irene, the State of Vermont has chosen Brattleboro, along with six other towns, to receive consulting assistance through a federal Disaster Relief Grant. As the designated downtown organization, Building a Better Brattleboro has been asked to help implement the project.

The Town of Brattleboro has been notified by representatives of Bread Loaf Construction, working on behalf of Mesabi Inc, that the Harmony Lot underpass will be closed to public access on August 6, 2013 at 6:00am. The closing is necessary to maintain public safety during the yearlong redevelopment of the Brooks House. It is anticipated that the underpass will be closed for the duration of the project.

Residents and Business Owners:

The Town is planning to install new sidewalks on the east side of Main Street, starting at the Gilbert Memorial Bridge and continuing north to Walnut Street. Some sections of this sidewalk were recently replaced as part of a VTrans project. The Downtown Sidewalk Project will replace the sections that have not yet been upgraded. The project is intended to improve safety for pedestrians and create a more attractive Main Street. Two FHWA Enhancement grants and a local match in the form of a bond fund this project.

The Conservation Commission will meet at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Eaton Avenue for a hike of Hogle Wildlife Sanctuary Trail.

The Agricultural Advisory Committee will be meeting at 7:00 PM on Monday, July 1, 2013 in the Hanna Cosman Room of the Muncipal Center.

The West Brattleboro Association is raising funds to put up two “Welcome to West Brattleboro” signs, one at either end of the village. These will add to the village’s sense of pride and make the village even more inviting and attractive to both visitors and locals.

To do it right, this will cost about $3,000 per sign, or $6,000 total. To date the Association has raised around $1,400 toward this goal.

A film by Montgomery/Socci produced by Maria Dominguez; Upper Living Memorial Park: A Possible Skatepark Site is now available to watch on BCTV for the first time. It was filmed over 8 months ago based on my hand out  submitted to a site selction process requested by concerned citizens which was denied by the selectboard in March 2011. Please excuse  some of the repetition on points and reasons why we think ULMP  just may be the best skatepark location, this was our first attempt at filming. The Upper Living Memorial Park is under utilized in the summer and we think would be an almost ideal location for an expansive skatepark accommodating many various skate type activities within our public recreation park designated for such use and could tastefully coexist with present alternate season ski slope without too much interference.

The Police-Fire Facility Building Committee will meet on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2:00pm in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Committee will enter executive session.

Strand Avenue will be closed to through traffic tentatively until August 6th, 2013 while BUR Construction performs drainage and retaining wall construction. Crosby Street will also be closed to through traffic from the intersection of Crosby and Strand to 65 Crosby Street tentatively until August 6th, 2013.

Hopefully you will have  seen some of my earlier posts in support of keeping the River Garden as a public space. I am working with a group of people now who share the intention of putting together a new, independent non-profit entity, to run the River Garden for the benefit of the people of Brattleboro and the surrounding areas.

I wish to thank those of you who voted at Representative Town Meeting for the eleventh-hour successful resolution I introduced, in which RTM strongly urges BaBB to keep the River Garden open to the public by choosing an organizational plan that will allow for that.

On March 7, 2013 at 6:00pm at the Brattleboro Municipal Center in the Selectboard Meeting Room Vermont Agency of Transportation will hold a Section 502 Public Hearing to review plans for improvements to Route 5 (Putney Road) from the Veterans Bridget to the Exit 3 Round-about.  

This project calls for a reconstruction of the roadway with construction of four roundabouts, retainage walls, landscaping, and sidewalks.  This is a major infrastructure project.  The Section 502 Hearing is the public’s opportunity to review, ask questions, and provide feedback on this project.   While construction is still several years off, this is the time for citizens to provide input into final design.  

March 1, 2013 – Building a Better Brattleboro (BABB), owner and operator of the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, announces the process for taking the next steps towards the organization’s divestiture of management and/or ownership of the Robert H. Gibson River Garden. As such, it invites the community and those parties interested in presenting proposals to do so, based on the following schedule and guidelines.
