Library Renovations Complete!

Dear Library Community,
Thank you so much for your patience during the remodeling project downstairs! We know that being closed for a week was tough, and a big adjustment, and we appreciate that. On Monday morning we will be open for business as usual at 10 am. Come and see our new, spacious layout!


Brooks Library Main Reading Room & Mezzanine Closed March 19-25

The Brooks Memorial Library Main Reading Room and Mezzanine will be closed due to renovations March 19-25. The Children’s Room and Teen Room will remain open. We will be installing flooring in our first floor reading room. Materials may be requested via email and picked up in the Children’s Room when their arrival has been confirmed. Thanks for your patience as we build an even better Brooks Memorial Library.


Student Art Month: Elementary School Art at Brooks Library

March is Student Art Month in Windham County. spotlights and gives public recognition to the outstanding visual art created by our elementary, middle school, and high school students. Make sure you don’t miss the 2017 displays in Downtown, Brattleboro and at Brooks Memorial Library.​


Digital Library Services: Hands-On Sessions at Brooks Library

Have you discovered the free resources available with your Brooks Memorial library card on your home computer or mobile device? Are you curious about Overdrive and OneClick and want to learn more? Did you try some of this and get frustrated? Matt and Jeanne are teaming up for two hands-on sessions to get you cruising forward into the digital library world.


1st Wednesdays At Brooks Library: In Her Time: A Fresh Look At Jane Austen With Dartmouth Professor Suzanne Brown

Dartmouth visiting assistant professor Suzanne Brown will look at novelist Jane Austen’s response to the events of her era in a talk at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro on March 1 at 7:00 pm. Her talk, “Jane Austen in Her Time,” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.


Parenting for Social Justice at Brooks Memorial Library

Parenting for Social Justice Chats will be happening at Brooks Memorial Library for three Wednesdays from 6:00pm-8:00pm: March 8th, April 12th, and May 10th. This initial series will focus on race and racial justice.

Parenting is beautiful and it is challenging. One of the things we struggle with as parents is having hard conversations with our kids. Many of us are seeking support and ideas for how to have the hard conversations with our kids about racism and police brutality, about transgender issues, about hatred for Muslims and many other social justice issues. And we are looking to turn those conversations into action.


Trivia Night at Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club To Benefit Brooks Library

Calling all trivia buffs and library supporters! This week, the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club’s Trivia Night will benefit the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library.

Please join us on Monday, Feb. 13th, 6:30 pm – 8:45 pm at the American Legion Hall, 32 Linden St., Brattleboro. Teams can consist of 4 to 6 players. Bring your friends or join a team when you arrive. Dinner is provided by Entera Catering, and a cash bar will be available as well. Admission is $20 and includes dinner and a donation to the Friends.


Brooks Memorial Library Children’s Room will be Closed!

Due to rennovations, the Brooks Memorial Library Children’s Room will be closed from Monday, February 6th through Saturday, February 11th. The rest of the library will be open, and patrons can drop off books downstairs throughout the week. Thank you for your patience as we work on building a better library.


Brooks Memorial Library Hosting Wikipedia #1lib1ref Session for Librarians and Information Seekers

Wikipedia is an ever changing source of information. Learning how to critically evaluate Wikipedia is a key skill. The annual #1lib1ref campaign () asks every librarian and information seeker to learn how to add a reference to Wikipedia, to help ensure that the facts on the website are backed by reliable research.

Brooks Memorial Library will be hosting a #1lib1ref session, for librarians and information seekers alike. RSVP to starr@brooklibraryvt.org. Learn how to add a reference to Wikipedia and discuss the role of Wikipedia in Research on Friday, February 3 from 2-3 pm. Building Monticello: First Wednesdays at Brooks Library

Jefferson never knew the Monticello of today-in perfect condition, impeccably furnished. Join us Wednesday, February 1st at 7 pm as Dartmouth College senior lecturer Marlene Heck explains the lifelong project Jefferson called his “essay in architecture.” This program is sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council. Free and open to all.

Tech Help at Brooks Library

Almost everybody has a tech question, and Matthew Wojcik, the library’s Electronic Services Support Specialist, offers free individual help on a wide variety of computers and mobile devices for all library patrons. or the to book one of the appointment slots, which are usually Mondays 5:00-7:00 and Thursdays 1:00-2:00. If those times don’t work, it’s good to inquire anyway, and Matt will make other arrangements when he can.


Job Hunt Help Returns to Brooks Library

Job Hunt Helper Danielle Braverman will resume individual consultations for job hunters and career planners on January 24th. Paths of the Gods: Hiking the Sorrento Peninsula at Brooks Library

Save the date! Join former Library Director Jerry Carbone and his touring companions, Arthur and Carol Westing (Putney, Vt.), on January 28, at 3 PM, in the Library’s meeting room, for a talk on a recent hiking trip to Italy’s famed Sorrento peninsula. The group hiked and toured the area for two weeks in November. The slide presentation will include views and topography from the ancient trails and mule paths that line the limestone Latarri Mountain range and Tyrrhenian Sea.


Start the New Year with Gratitude, Writing Thank-You Letters at Brooks Library

Join us at Brooks Memorial Library on Thursday 19 January 2017, 3 pm – 5 pm and Monday 23 January 2017, 6 pm – 8 pm for writing thank you letters. At this time of year we think that it’s important to find and express the things that we’re grateful for. To that end we’re setting up some tables with paper, pencils, pens, envelopes, and stamps and we’re writing letters. Thank-you letters. We’re writing letters to thank the sun for coming up, to thank a friend for their love, to thank our bodies for carrying us through life.


Drop-In Scrabble at Brooks Library – Weekly EXCEPT on First Wednesdays
