Noticed Around Brattleboro – Summer 2017

Another edition of “what have you noticed recently,” in which you can report on the smallest of small things. You know, those things that make you stop for a second look, or that you mention to others when you get back from errands. No detail is too small.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Energy, Diversity, Plastic Bags, and New Trails

The energy of the Brattleboro Selectboard was spent on many issues of energy – from a demonstration of carbon use during a fuel oil purchase to appointing, oddly, multiple weighers of coal. Energy improvements were contemplated, but not firm enough to take hold quite yet.

The conversation about diversity continued, with a status report and a plan to survey experts and others in the community before jumping in with decided plans. Green Street and surrounding areas will get a new network of trails. And the board asked for an ordinance to ban single use plastic bags from retail outlets.

Brattleboro Gets Rain

Just noting for the record the rather spectacular rainfall we just experienced in Brattleboro. This was some of the hardest rain I’ve seen in quite a while. “Buckets!” as they like to say.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Diversity Discussion and Emergency Repairs

The Brattleboro Selectboard held an extensive discussion of diversity, both in Town hiring practices and the community at large. It was a start and step toward something probably positive, though the goals and steps to get there remain to be more fully developed.

Emergency repairs at the pool and the Harris parking lot were the other big items on the agenda, but the long diversity discussion made for quick summaries of these and other smaller matters due to a late hour.

We’ll Always Have Paris

The President has withdrawn the US from the Paris agreement, a 200 country effort to limit global warming to 2 degrees celsius (3.6 degrees F) over the pre-industrial era. We’re currently about 1.5 C above normal. There isn’t much wiggle room, and it isn’t a good time to thumb a nose at working together to keep the planet livable.

Fruit Pies In June

Today is the last day to enter the Strolling of the Heifers fruit pie competition. You can use any old dough recipe, they say, as long as it includes the sponsor’s product, but “the filling and overall pie recipe MUST be original.” Ingredients should be local.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – May 2, 2017

At their first regular meeting in May, the Brattleboro Selectboard will adopt a “Resolution for Compassion in Brattleboro,” and discuss diversity of Town staff. There will be a presentation by VTrans on reconstructing Putney Road, a pumper-rescue truck will be purchased, paving will be approved, an Energy Coordinator will be appointed, and another $70,000 in grant applications for for the Brattleboro skatepark will be pursued.
