Vermont Public Disconnect Is Quite Obvious

In case it is of interest, this is a letter to the editor (LTE) of mine submitted to vtdigger this morning in response to a recently published LTE regarding the name of “Vermont Public” written by Paul Stone (https://vtdigger.org/letters_to_editor/please-change-the-new-vermont-public-name/), fyi:

Vermont Public Disconnect Is Quite Obvious:

Since the merger between Vermont PBS and VPR and the subsequent name change, because it most definitely describes and means nothing whatsoever, I have been referring to the organization as “Vermont Public Whatever.”

My suggestion, made to a long time VPR reporter as well as various concerned members of the public I have spoken to on the subject, was that the merged media organization ought to seriously consider changing its name by adding the name to something along the lines of Broadcasting (i.e., Vermont Public Broadcasting”); however, in a recent letter to the editor published by vtdigger, the writer suggested adding the word Media instead and their recommendarion is quite good and potentially even better than mine.

One would think that, given about how Vermont Public is currently the name of the media organization, it would be more receptive to the stated concerns as well as suggestions coming from that very public supposedly being represented and act, not merely react in what seems to be a somewhat lame fashion.

Sadly, apparently, it appears that it doesn’t and it hasn’t, not thus far. Hence, the disconnect is quite obvious.

Change the name. Please.

  • Yes

I still agree! It still sounds like they are leaving something out.

  • Actually...

Vermont Public Disconnect is an interesting name… : )

    VPD!

  • Vermont Thinglet

Realizing not everyone on this site can receive good reception on all the alternative alternative public radio stations, but worth noting that the Vt one is not the only possible “local’ NPR outlet; Last I knew New Hampshire Public, er, Radio still had the word “radio” in its title; we get good reception on what used to be WFCR from Amherst, Mass. (tho unfortunately they have chosen to identify themselves as NEW ENGLAND Public MEDIA, rather pretentious change and also drops the “radio” designation, which is what the “R” stood for.) My fave is WAMC from Albany, NY (“Northeast Public … RADIO!”)

  • Vt Public R A D I O

I cannot listen to Vermont Public R A D I O for very long because my shoulders and spirit get tired of cringing. And they repeat that horrible moniker so often! I left a brief comment or two on their Facebook page to no avail. I appreciate you writing this.

  • The Maine Station

I heard one of the Vermont Public (Radio) hosts telling listeners to tune in to Vermont Public (Television)’s Main(e) Station.
