Session Americana at Next Stage on Friday, July 20

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present folk/roots-rock band Session Americana at Next Stage on Friday, July 20 at 7:30 pm. Featuring Boston-based, multi-instrumentalists and singers Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Beard, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and Jefferson Hamer, plus a rotating collective of guest musicians, the band’s raucous live shows are built around the community concept of traditional Irish seisiúns.

Blending vintage American roots music styles – from country to jazz to rock – Session Americana is a rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. This band/collective of talented musicians craft a musical experience unlike any other.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Free Concert Series – The Stockwell Brothers on Sunday, July 15

Twilight Music continues its 16th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk rock, world beat, rock, country, pop, Celtic, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 15 with contemporary bluegrass and folk music quartet The Stockwell Brothers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 26. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Green Mountain Well, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney area businesses and organizations. A Bit Agnostic

Astronomers agree that there are trillions, maybe quadrillions of stars. They further agree that many of these stars have planets circling them. Billions of these planets enjoy conditions capable of sustaining life as we know it (These are called “Goldilocks” planets).

Probability suggests that at least some of these may, in fact contain life. After all, there’s some form of life almost everywhere on earth no matter how harsh the conditions, from the ice in Antarctica to the deepest trenches of the oceans.

Brattleboro choices for Internet are rather poor. Hardly anyone here gets 25 megabits down and 3 megabits up, a standard definition of broadband. To approach those speeds one must pay a small monthly fortune.

Former Brattleboro Rocker On The Magic of Brattleboro

Although this story came out (in Fodor’s of all places) almost a year ago, it’s an interesting read and especially so since it’s about our very own Brattleboro, Vermont. “The Magic of Brattleboro, Vermont, According to King Tuff,” by interviewer Rachael Roth, describes our town through the eyes of a young musician who was raised here and still maintains strong ties to the area. is his name, and he makes good music, if you haven’t heard him already. He’s signed to the major indie label Sub Pop Records out of Seattle.

Oligarch comes from the Greek, meaning “rule by the few”.

A Russian oligarch is a businessperson who rapidly accumulated wealth after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Brattleboro-West Arts: New Passage, Brooks House Atrium Hallway Gallery Opens July 6th

BRATTLEBORO: A new exhibit in the Brooks House, 130 Main St. will open July 6, spotlighting the artwork of three Brattleboro-West Arts members.

The show, titled New Passage, will feature paintings by Kay Curtis, Julia Eva Bacon and Cai Xi in the Atrium Hallway Gallery. The new works will be on view during Brattleboro’s July 6 Gallery Walk and through the summer.

A Brattleboro History Exhibit

I thought it might be fun to tell you about a project (in-progress!) I’m working on with the Brattleboro Historical Society. It’s an exhibit all about Brattleboro that will be on display at the Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier, from August to January.

BHS hired me on to do exhibit design and project manage, two things I enjoy doing. I also love Brattleboro history.

MGFA Feature Exhibit: Torin Porter’s “DayDreams”

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is pleased to present DayDreams, an exhibition of steel sculptures by Torin Porter. The show opens Thursday, June 28 at 5pm, with an Artist Reception Saturday, June 30th from 5-7pm.

Torin Porter’s stylized figures reflect complex facets of humanity, creating modern world archetypes. As Porter speaks of DayDreams, “[These sculptures] exist externally but we experience them internally. When we behold them with our senses, feel their weight and texture and see their forms change in response to our movements, they come to life as they interact with the associations they bring.” Simplistic and playful at first glance, each sculpture in DayDreams holds layers of symbolism, easily accessible for the viewer to unfold.

Fair Housing and Freedom of Association

This essay is part of an ongoing dialogue with my nephew. It is a response to his contention that the Fair Housing Act of 1968 outlaw freedom of association, because it force diversity on people. I had mentioned the history of lynching.
