Online Auction To Benefit The West River Railroad Museum

The West River Railroad was established in 1880, ran from Brattleboro, Vermont, to South Londonderry, Vermont, and was discontinued in 1936. The Newfane Depot was one of ten on the line and had been used for different purposes through the years until the Historical Society of Windham County was given the opportunity to purchase the Depot in 2014.

The Historical Society set about to restore the Depot and make it a museum for the West River Railroad. The Museum opened in 2017 and has been open every year to the public free-of-charge on weekends from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

Introduction to Woodworking: Build a Side Table

Through the creation of a side table, this class introduces students to the fundamentals of building furniture, the safe use of power tools such as the jointer, planer and table saw, a wide range of hand tools and techniques, and numerous design possibilities.  Instructor Doug Finkel has many years of experience teaching in schools and at craft centers.   Tuesdays, September 21 – November 9 (8 sessions); 6-9 pm.

Vietnam Moving Wall Public Forum at the Brattleboro VFW

Tuesday September 7th, the Brattleboro VFW located at 40 Black Mountain Road is proud to host a Vietnam Wall Memorial question and answer forum where the public is invited to attend. There will be speakers to offer their perspective on the Wall, then a question and answer session after their presentations. All are welcome to attend. We ask that people are respectful during this time, and realize some emotions may run high.

Personal Stress and World Stress

There are few people who do not experience some degree of stress in their daily lives. We figure out ways to cope and we move on, trying to live in the moment as best we can. Lately I have been stressed more than I ever have in my entire life and am trying to get past it but it is proving difficult. Here’s my story.

I will spare you details but my wife and I have bought a house in Brattleboro and she has sold her place in Massachusetts. My house in Guilford, where I have lived for the past 41 years is for sale. (Contact me if you want to buy it.) We are in the process of moving into our new house. We knew this whole process would be complicated but we were not prepared for the level of anxiety we are experiencing. We have each other and that helps a lot.

Waite was brought to Brattleboro by the 10 o’clock train on Wednesday morning, by Deputy Marshal Sprague, to testify in the several cases now pending before the commissioners against his estate in insolvency. He walks the streets in company with the deputy-marshal with all his old-time air of enjoyment and careless indifference. Whatever else may be the matter with him Waite evidently is not a prey to remorse and compunction for his sins and crimes.
