Archer Mayor Talk and Book Signing at Dummerston Community Center

The Dummerston Community Center will host Archer Mayor’s appearance and discussion on his most recently published book ” Presumption of Guilt” on Monday, November 14th at 7 pm. Joe Gunther investigates a very cold “missing person” case after the discovery of a 40 year old skeleton at the decommissioned Vermont Yankee plant.

The Community Center is located in the West Dummerston Village, off Route 30. The event is free.

Books will be available for purchasing and for Archer’s autograph.

The Value of Old and Rare Books: Lecture & Appraisals by Ken Gloss of Boston’s Brattle Books

     Kenneth Gloss, proprietor of the internationally known Brattle Book Shop in Boston’s Downtown Crossing section, will give a free and open talk, and will give free verbal appraisals of books, on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:30 pm at Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main Street, Brattleboro, VT. Ken will discuss the value of old and rare books. 

Ken, who is also a frequent guest appraiser on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, will talk in part about the history of his historic bookshop (www.brattlebookshop.com), which goes back to around 1825.

Cracker Jacks

This election is like opening a box of Cracker Jacks.

 

God only knows what Trump might do.

I take that back, God doesn’t know, and neither does Trump.

In the contradictory and bizarre word salads Trump serves up he is liable to say just about anything. In his speeches and tweets, he often starts with “a lot of people say,” followed by looney tunes claims and ending with, “you can look it up on the Internet.

However, I don’t believe he’d lead us to war.

Art Opening & Book Signing: Robin Truelove Stronk, DVM

West Brattleboro — The foyer and other gallery spaces at All Souls Church Unitarian Universalist are showing paintings — from race horses to raptors to farm animals and more — by retired veterinarian Robin Truelove Stronk through the end of December. The public is invited to an artist’s reception and book signing from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 5.

This exhibit includes four large canvases featuring race horses and dressage horses painted with the fingers and palm of Robin’s left hand while she was recuperating from surgery on her dominant right hand. Several raptors and owls will also make an appearance: “My focus in my art is the eye of the animal, and they have such large, amazing eyes that I find them irresistible,” she says. Other works include two oversize florals; three large fabric feed bags with graphics creatively enhanced by many colorful breeds of chicken; and a “mixed bag” of other farm animals.

David Schoales, Mollie Burke

I have favorite candidates for every office on the ballot, but the two for whom I feel greatest enthusiasm are David Schoales for Windham County Senator, and Mollie Burke, Brattleboro District 2 Representative.  

For years while the Clark-Canal Summer Program was going, as a volunteer, Mollie Burke taught art to neighborhood children. Hardly anyone knew about this: She did it solely because she is a good neighbor with love in her heart. Mollie talks with neighborhood people all the time, not just when electioneering. She is approachable, intelligent, responsive. We are fortunate to have an effective representative in the State House, and it is going to a pleasure to vote for her. 

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting – Bittersweet Lane

Who’s It Gonna Be?

With less than four days to go until Election Day, now seems like a good time to get our predictions in as to who the winner will be.  Which of the two dubious candidates placed before us for our consideration will be the next president?  

Will it be the evil Donald Trump, hated by the media and good people everywhere?  Or will it be the beleaguered anti-Trump Hillary Clinton?  I know who I think it will be and will post my prediction below.

Brattleboro Skatepark Back in Action

The Brattleboro Skatepark committee is having a fundraiser on Tuesday, December 6th at 5pm at Elliot Street Fish & Chips. We are busy working to push us over the top so we can put the shovel in the ground and get kids skating in Brattleboro at Living Memorial Park. Please tell your family, friends, etc…to come out and support the skatepark. Fun times!

60% of the evenings proceeds will go toward the construction of the Brattleboro Skatepark.

Brattleboro Town Clerk Voting Hours

The Brattleboro Town Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon for those wishing to vote early. The office will be closed on Tuesday, November 8. Staff will be administering the election at the VFW at 40 Black Mountain Road. The polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. If you are unsure if you are registered, call the town clerk at 251-8129.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of November 7th

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.
