SAVINGS BANK OF WALPOLE WILL BE ONE OF THE FIRST AREA BANKS TO RETROFIT THEIR BRANCH ATMS WITH NEW SECURITY DEVICE

Keene, NH—In an effort to combat ATM fraud and “skimming,” Savings Bank of Walpole is pleased to announce that it will be one of the first area banks to utilize the ActivEdge Skim Guard system at all of their branch ATMs. The machines will be retrofitted with the ActivEdge system as of Thursday, August 4th.

Skimming means that a person (who is referred to as a skimmer) has installed a counterfeit card reader on the exterior of an ATM in an attempt to steal another person’s card information during ATM transactions or at point-of-sale machines like the ones used at gas stations or convenience stores.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of August 1st

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Upper Dummerston Road

Upper Dummerston may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Greenleaf Tree Removal

On Thursday, July 28th, from 7:00 a.m. until approximately 3:00 p.m., Greenleaf Street will be closed for tree removal between Western Avenue and Mather Road. Traffic detour signs will be set up allowing traffic to use Mather Road across to Bonnyvale Road for access to Western Avenue. Crews will ensure access to residences within the closure area.

End of the Line for Bernie Sanders

After many months of fighting the good fight, and losing, we’ve come to the end of the line for Bernie Sanders.  He was our last best hope, but for whatever reason, people opted for the “safe,” status quo candidate Hillary Clinton.  This may have been engineered, to a large degree, by a party apparatus that opposed his candidacy — the DNC email leak last week made it clear that they were out to get him, and it’s likely the party’s animosity toward Sanders trickled down to local party people across the country.  No wonder people thought there was voter suppression and shenanigans — the Democratic party was at war with its own progressive wing.  But so be it.

My daughter’s car was literally broken into yesterday (back window smashed completely) and everything valuable and important was stolen. This happened in the parking area for the West River Recreation area at the junction of Rte. 30 and the Williamsville Road around 3 to 4 pm. 2 trucks were seen peeling out of the parking lot heading toward Newfane. New Session: Women’s Easy Acoustic Music Ensemble!

Singer/songwriter and music instructor Lisa McCormick is offering a new session of the Women’s Easy Acoustic Music Ensemble Class, beginning August 2, in Brattleboro,VT.

The class invites women to experience playing acoustic Folk and Boomer classic songs together, in a fun easygoing group environment. 

A world-renowned guitar instructor, McCormick specializes in teaching adult beginners through intermediate level students. 

Women with basic functional skills on an acoustic instrument are encouraged to join. Instruments may include guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bass, keyboards, and others. Singing is optional, and encouraged.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting Agenda – Civil Litigation

Missing Cat – Birdie

Keep an eye out for an old, black cat in the Cedar Street, Forest Square, Chestnut Hill area.

Birdie wandered off a few days ago and hasn’t been seen since. She’s quite old, very quiet, and polite, and likes to sleep under bushes or in a warm sunny spot. Last seen in the Water Lane area.

If you have a garage, shed, or cellar door that you opened for a while this week, consider opening it back up and taking a look. She may have wandered in.

SeVWA’s 2016 E. coli Monitoring of Local River Sites Continued July 20th

The Southeastern Vermont Watershed Alliance (SeVWA) had the third day of our monitoring program for the summer of 2016 on Wednesday, July 20th. Volunteers collected samples from 30 sites on eight rivers and streams and will continue to do so every other week through the end of August. This year, we have sites on the West River, Rock River, North Branch Ball Mountain Brook, Williams River (including South Branch and Middle Branch), Saxtons River, Sacketts Brook, and Whetstone Brook.

River users, whether they be swimming, boating, paddling, tubing, fishing, or even just hiking by, can help improve water quality by taking care of the rivers and their shores. The best way is to practice Leave No Trace principles ( for more info), especially disposing of waste, including pet waste, properly. This can keep whatever would have been left behind on the shoreline from washing into the river the next time it rains as well as keeping it aesthetically pleasing.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn presents The Gaslight Tinkers on Sunday, July 24

Twilight Music continues its 14th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 24 with Celtic world beat quartet The Gaslight Tinkers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 21. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, Green Mountain Well, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.
