Vote Brattleboro as Strongest Town
Brattleboro is facing Dunnellen, New Jersey in the first round bracket of the Strongest Town Contest, with voters from across the continent deciding which will advance to the Elite Eight round of this March Madness-style tournament.
The Strongest Town Contest spotlights and celebrates communities that are continuously becoming more resilient and prosperous through bottom-up action.

Noticed Around Brattleboro – Spring 2023
Time for the regular “add your own” observation column. What’s going on around Brattleboro this spring?
Renaissance Jewelry is having a big sale and seemingly going out of business after quite a while on Main Street.
Rt 30 work is starting up again – some new guardrails installed near the edge of town. The bigger observation is that flaggers are going to become a job of the past, replaced by robotics.

A Self-Publishing Experiment: Jake Hill
Last week I talked about the lack of equality in the presentation of various art forms to the public. I find it particularly troubling that writers have to jump through so many hoops to just have people read their writing.
So I am trying an experiment using my platform, which reaches only a few hundred people at best. I have been writing because I feel compelled to in order to keep something in my inner spirit alive. I am resigned to the reality that very few people will read my writing.

We lost power, and internet, and water, and eventually even dial-up phone service here at world headquarters. It was an amazing amount of snow. Probably over two feet where we are. Lots of downed tree branches and wires throughout the region.
Brattleboro Downtown District Snow Removal
The Town of Brattleboro would like to remind everyone that the snow emergency ban is in effect.
Snow and ice will be removed from the streets in the downtown area this evening.
Parked vehicles in the downtown district must be removed by 11:00pm or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.
WSESD Annual Meeting
The Windham Southeast School District (“WSESD”) will hold an information session on the proposed FY ’24 budget on Monday, March 20, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. in the Windham Regional Career Center Cusick Conference Room, 80 Atwood Street, Brattleboro and remotely via Zoom
District Caucuses and RTM Information Session Cancelled
Due to the winter storm, which has caused power outages affecting tonight’s Representative Town Meeting District Caucuses and Information Session, this March 15, 2023 meeting has been cancelled. It is expected to be rescheduled to Wednesday, March 22, 2023 and be combined with the other Information Session previously planned for that evening. District Caucuses would begin at 5:30 PM on March 22, 2023, and the expanded Information Session to cover both the FY24 budget and the bond articles would begin at 6:00 PM at the Academy School Gym. Childcare will be available. Town Meeting Members and members of the public are invited to attend and ask questions. Everyone’s patience and understanding are requested as Town staff work to finalize these alternate plans.
Brattleboro Board of Listers Meeting
The Brattleboro Board of Listers will meet on Monday, March 20, 2023 at 9:00am in the Assessor’s Office (Suite 101) at the Municipal Center (230 Mian Street).
Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – March 21, 2023
The Brattleboro Selectboard will set aside over $2 million of the $2.7 million in ARPA funding for EMS related projects and potential start-up costs, leaving a much smaller amount for the public to discuss how to spend. This comes after promises of community outreach and public input to best determine the ways to spend the funds. Related, the monthly EMS update has been relegated to the Consent Agenda.
The board will also discuss how to spend the $300k in community safety funds. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.
Brattleboro Development Review Board Cancellation
Due to the winter storm, which has caused power outages in the community, the March 15, 2023 Development Review Board meeting is cancelled. It will be re-warned for Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.
Forum for District 3 Residents on Town Issues Prior to Representative Town Meeting
In an effort to help Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting members better represent their constituents in District 3, there will be a public forum for District 3 residents at 3 pm on Sunday March 19 in the Parlor of the Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main Street. This citizens’ forum is intended to allow people who live in District 3 to express their concerns and to ask questions about Town issues in advance of the RTM meeting on March 25. RTM members from District 3 are being encouraged to attend to hear from their neighbors.
The warning for RTM which lists the articles on which RTM members will vote starts are page 8 of the Town Report which is located on the right side of the brattleboro.org website. Just below that is a link to the Finance Committee’s report on the FY 2024 budget (and in the third paragraph of that report there is a link to the Committee’s guide for understanding how the Town budgets).
Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem at Next Stage
Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present New England’s acclaimed folk/roots quartet Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem at Next Stage on Saturday, April 15 at 7:30 pm.
Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem feature 4-part vocal harmonies, indelible songs, fiddle, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, and a homemade percussion kit of cardboard boxes, tin cans, caulk tubes, packing-tape tambourines, bottle-cap rattles, Mongolian jaw harps, and a vinyl suitcase. Over the past 20 years, the quartet has toured its uplifting, healing performances to concert halls, festivals, and residency engagements across North America, and has released seven CDs on Signature Sounds. From the Newport Folk Festival to California World Music Festival and beyond, this band’s steadfast brew of wit, camaraderie, and musicality leaves audiences everywhere humming and hopeful, spirits renewed.
Brattleboro Winter Storm Update
The winter storm continued overnight with additional snow and downed trees. There is an estimated 9% of Brattleboro without power but surrounding towns have as many as 90% of residents without electricity, as of this briefing. Green Mountain Power has been working hard overnight to clear roads and re-establish service.
March 14 Academic Speaker Series Event Postponed
The March 14 Landmark College Academic Speaker Series event with cartoonist Hilary Price has been canceled in anticipation of inclement weather.

Brattleboro Women’s Chorus Seeks New Singers!
The Brattleboro Women’s Chorus welcomes new singers to sing with us on March 16 or 17. Come join in the singing either in-person on Thursday mornings or evenings, or virtually on Friday mornings. Our first two weeks of rehearsals on March 16 and 23 are open to new singers to come and check out the chorus to see if it is a good fit for them (provided they email us in advance). Advance registration is required for all singers.
The Chorus welcomes anyone ages 10 and up who identifies as female or non-binary, and whose vocal range comfortably includes the A in the middle of the treble staff. All abilities are welcome and no auditions are required.
