Deacon Blues – A Musical Reminiscence

Sitting on my back porch, head still addled from this late season flu, I listen as the last chords of “Deacon Blues” fade away and permit myself a sardonic smile.

“They got a name for the winners —
I want a name when I lose…”

I am listening to Aja, Steely Dan’s mid 70s masterpiece, seven perfectly executed songs that manage to touch your soul while still exhibiting every iota of the “slick production” for which so many of us derided it when it came out.  But then as now, I ask myself, how can anyone resist the crystalline chords of “Aja” or Wayne Shorter’s heartrending sax solo… Of course, I’m biased.  Not only was I a huge Dan fan from Can’t Buy A Thrill on, but by the early 80s, I had the perfect system to play them on.

Wallace Stevens Essay, Commas, Connecticut, Rugged Independence and Good Will to All

This passage from a Wallace Stevens essay moved me, in part because I have been in the Connecticut visiting my mom, family and the land of my origin. It also strikes me that all of those writing instructors that I have had, who kept trying to remove almost every comma from my writing, were wrong. Notice how lovely the abundant use of commas make this piece, and how hard it would be to create as lovely an essay if it was attempted without them.

“I was not myself born in the state. There is nothing that gives the feel of Connecticut, like coming home to it. . .

Weekend Concert Series – Beastie Boys

This week we have an important addition to the history of concert films. Beastie Boys “Awesome I F*ckin’ Shot That” is a concert film that was filmed by members of the audience. Cameras were given out before the show to people in all parts of the room, from the good seats back to the nosebleed rows.

The instructions were simple – just keep filming. It was up to those with the cameras to decide where to point them.

The show you see here is the edited-together results from the October 9, 2004 show at Madison Square Garden in NYC.

Smart Meter News

The following newsletter is being distributed by StopSmeters.org, a Vermont organization with a mission “to educate the general public about the adverse health effects of microwave radiation and the health and privacy impacts of wireless smart meters.”

StopSmeters: Nightmare in Maine, Electrosmog, WiFi

To follow up on the outrageous news from Maine; Central Maine Power’s  (CMP) “Smart” Meter project calculations were a tad off. Instead of $25 million in projected savings, through “efficiencies” etc…  there’s a deficit of approximately $80 million (that’s the low estimate…) Maine’s PUC is initiating an audit to get to the bottom of this debacle. CMP would like to pass the buck to customers with an 8% + hike in rates each year for the next five years.

Short notice but I am looking for a place locally to have a romantic evening/afternoon tomorrow with my husband as we have a sitter! Some daydreams included a bottle of wine/champagne and a room with a Jacuzzi. Are there any places that people know of where we might escape to tomorrow?

B4 Peace Arts/ Namaya Art Rat at Clearwater Festival June 15-16

Clearwater Festival with the B 4 Peace Team/ Namaya Art Rats was a wonderful success.  Thousands came out for the Peace Arts Projects at this amazing festival of music, and activism by the beautiful Hudson River.

We had so many volunteers and helpers with the B 4 Peace Faires. The art projects included: Inevitability of Peace – a 9 foot tall pyramid of steel with a peace wreath encased in 300 pound block of ice that melted with a single “candle” over several days:
