Local Artist Offers Unique Recycling and Up-cycling Workshop to Benefit Groundworks Food Shelf

BRATTLEBORO – With an up-cycled twist on basket weaving, a three-part workshop – taught by local artists Jackie Abrams, Jen Wiechers, and Janette Smuts – will benefit the Groundworks Food Shelf. The workshop, which takes place on three Thursday evenings (March 30, April 6, and April 20) at the River Gallery School’s Main Street Studio in Brattleboro, will cover the art of making ‘yarn’ from used plastic bags to crochet strong, colorful, and multi-purpose tote bags.

Local Musician Joel Veena Tours India and Netherlands with New Album

Brattleboro-resident musician Joel ‘Veena’ Eisenkramer has released his new world music album on digital platforms worldwide and is now on a concert tour in India and the Netherlands. This tour will span from March to May 2017 and cover ten different cities in the respective countries. The album, ‘Unexpected Blessings,’ features Joel’s 21-stringed Indian slide guitar in collaboration with local and international musicians including Gordon Korstange, Todd Roach and Jed Blume of Vermont, Suraj Nirwan of India and Kees van Boxtel from Holland.

Write Action has joined the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library and the Brattleboro Historical Society in researching and promoting Brattleboro’s past heritage and present status as a “book town.”   This current collaboration is focused on both the history of, and identifying and presenting today’s publishing and printing businesses as an important and vibrant part of our community.
 
The Brattleboro publishing and printing collaborative launched its initiative in 2015 with a public meeting that generated ideas about ways to promote the town’s book history and reputation.  Subsequent projects have included the preparation of annotated bibliography about relevant holdings at the Brooks Memorial Library, and a public presentation about the Stephen Daye Press.
 
Additionally, the groups above have joined forces with the Brattleboro Literary Festival, Marlboro College, 118 Elliot and others to better highlight the rich history of the printed word in Brattleboro and environs for locals and visitors alike.  The “Peoples, Places and History of the Written Word in Brattleboro, Vermont” project, which was submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities for a matching grant opportunity last month, aims to create a strong community focused on words in and around Brattleboro. The collaborative research, public events, and tours envisioned to be created by the Project will enable a more rooted connection to the history and places we share as a community today and stimulate increased tourism to the area.

The design-build team of PCL Civil Constructors, Inc. and Figg Bridge Engineers, Inc. in conjunction with the Town of Brattleboro, invites the public to participate in guided walks across the 1,036-foot, three-span segmental I-91 Brattleboro Bridge on the afternoon of Saturday, March 4. During the walk, the community will have a chance to take pictures and ask questions about the bridge design and construction.

PUTNEY VT- On March 18th at 11am and 2pm Sandglass’s beloved Winter Sunshine series begins with Double Image Theater Lab. I Laid an Egg is an original piece inspired by a dream the co-creator Margot had as a child. Margot goes on an adventure with her imaginary pal, Egg, in a world made of shadows and household items. A nonverbal, interactive show filled with many unexpected surprises and discoveries, I Laid an Egg bears elements of Shadow Theater, Object Theater and music, inviting the audience into a child’s realm of make-believe. It presents a poetic imaginative journey for the child in all of us.
