Please join Friends of Brooks Memorial Library for this special program, Kitchen Tunks & Parlor songs with Mark Greenberg, at 7 PM on Thursday, May 14. 

Since the 1980s, Greenberg has been interviewing and recording musicians throughout Vermont, tracing the development of the state’s vernacular music from its roots in Anglo-Celtic traditions through the influences of French-Canadian emigrants and the arrival of radio and other electronic technologies. 

Greenberg currently teaches courses in American music at UVM and taught American Studies and Humanities at Goddard College from 1991-2003.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of May 10

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

Night work adjacent to Route 30 will continue this week, but will not affect traffic.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Alicia Olatuja

The Vermont Jazz Center is delighted to welcome vocalist Alicia Olatuja and her quartet on May 16th at 8:00 PM. This sublime singer is best known for her soaring solo with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Obama’s second inauguration. But even though she grew up in the church, loves the music and draws inspiration from it, Alicia’s voice and persona are expansive. She uses her gospel roots as a springboard to investigate jazz, African music, classical and even well-crafted pop. In a recent interview, Alicia stated, “I blur the lines that some draw between genres.

I am pleased to be collaborating with Tom Ragle, also of Guilford,  on a public reading of Sonnets on Wednesday, May 13.  The 7:00 pm program will take place at Guilford Community Church, and is admission-free with donations welcome.

Tom is well-known as past president of Marlboro College, where he also taught literature.  He is a recently-published poet, has given many readings of classic English poetry on WVEW, and is a longtime member of Write Action.

I have been reading aloud, both poetry and especially Christmas stories, since I arrived in Guilford in 1968.

Burn Ban in Brattleboro and Vermont

Last night’s showers did little to ease the dry conditions in the area. The State of VT and local burn ban is still in effect until May 19 or until it is revoked or extended.

The burn ban means that there is no burning until the order is revoked or expired.

Transformer Fire Shuts Indian Point

“A transformer exploded at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in suburban New York. (35 mi. from NYC).

The blaze, which sparked an oil leakage, forced the automatic shutdown of the facility’s Unit 3 reactor, which sits near the Hudson River and supplies five per cent of the power to the state.

The fire – which was seen sending plumes of smoke into the air by passersby on the other side of the river – was quickly extinguished and the reactor was deemed safe and stable,

You may not know, this young man was accepted into Harvard Law, but didn’t go. Instead, he went down the path of a legal education at NYU, but became a comedian instead. Probably a wise choice.

My Wife Is Bicycling From The Top Of The State, All The Way Back Home

As part of a fundraiser for Neighborhood School house, my wife is going up to the Canadian border and riding all the way back home. The fundraiser iwill help raise money to provide scholarships to the Neighborhod School House, based on financial need.

 Anything helps. We mean, anything helps. It’s about 200 miles. At a penny a mile, that would only be $2.00. Go for a nickel a mile, and that’s $10.

Winston Prouty Center Hosts Indoor Mini-Golf Classic Grownups and Families on May 16

Winston Prouty Center for Child Development is hosting its Inaugural Indoor Mini-Golf Classic for grownups and families on Saturday, May 16, 2015 and Sunday, May 17, 2015, respectively. The two-day “FUN-raiser” is open to the public.

Saturday’s tournament for grownups is a black-tie optional evening that will feature light dinner fare, music, and a cash bar. The tournament will be from 6 to 9 p.m. and tickets are $25 per person.

Sunday’s family fun day will take place from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person, or only $12 for a foursome if you bring your Saturday night scorecard.
Both events will take place at the International Center at World Learning’s SIT campus in Brattleboro.

Next WBA Meeting Scheduled for Thursday May 14

The next monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will be held at the New England House
on Thursday, May 14th at 6:00 PM. After a review of the treasury the group will finalize details for their successful annual Chicken Barbecue, this year on Saturday, May 23rd. They will also discuss having a joint mixer in July with the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce again this year.

In addition, the WBA will tackle organization issues such as next steps toward making the group officially non-profit, along with capacity issues.  (Having enough people to take on all the tasks!)
