West Brattleboro, Vt. — An exhibit by Brattleboro artist Kay Curtis now graces gallery spaces at All Souls Church through the end of July. One of Kay’s larger paintings, “Diversity,” from a series she based on themes in the All Souls Covenant spoken from time to time at worship services, hangs permanently in the church parlor.

“Say Something New!” is a collection of twenty-one other works of Kay’s art created over the past thirty years. “I had great fun placing new marks on earlier work, and revisiting who I used to be,” Kay shares. “I took photography in college but have never shown the photos I love to make. In the spirit of this, showing new things seemed possible.”

On Exhibit: Saxtons River Art Guild
May 2013 

Members of the Saxtons River Art Guild will be exhibiting original paintings at the Brooks Memorial Library beginning Tuesday, April 30 until Tuesday, May 28. Included will be original paintings in watercolor, oil, and pastels.

The Saxtons River Art Guild was formed in Saxtons River, Vermont in 1976 by a small group of artists who enjoyed painting together. Membership has grown from a dozen or so to over 70 artists and others interested in the fine arts. Members come from throughout the southern Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Tickets go on sale Thursday, May 9 for the Brattleboro School of Dance annual spring recital. Performances take place the weekends of May 17-19 and May 24-26 at the New England Youth Theatre, located at 100 Flat Street in downtown Brattleboro.

Current dance students and alumni will perform in 14 pieces choreographed by faculty and guests of the school, demonstrating a breadth of styles that include ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop and belly dancing.

The recital’s 2013 theme, “Evolution,” reflects the progression of several pieces in the program over the course of different shows, says BSD director Jennifer Moyse, as well as the generational transition within the school’s community since it was founded by Kathleen Keller in 1976.

What’s Western about Western American Art?

Friday April 19th, at 6:00pm New England Youth Theatre will be rolling out the red carpet for a special gala fundraising event!

Join us for delicious French cuisine from local chefs, an assortment of fine wine, and live music performed by Deniz Cordell at 6pm.

Then enjoy a NEYT senior company performance of Scapin, written by France’s king of comedy – Moliere. NEYT uses the rave review off-Broadway adaptation created by America’s most famous clowns, Bill Irwin and Mark O’Donnell, who starred in the original Broadway production. It is literally laugh-a-second mayhem!

Thoughts on the Women’s Film Festival:

The differences are starkly noticeable, in both breadth and depth. Instead of a long span of many days’ worth of films in multiple venues along Main Street, there are two weekends in only one location. Instead of each film being shown twice so the viewing public can get multiple opportunities to see the favorites, each is shown once. Instead of the highest quality films for and about women, we get some good ones and some mediocre ones. Logistical glitches abound (like the single movie in one of the time-slots being only 30 minutes long).

On Exhibit: Student Art Month   
March is Student Art Month in Windham County, and the library hosts exhibits of artwork by Brattleboro elementary school children. Two-dimensional art can be seen on the main floor, and three-dimensional creations are found in display cases in the second-floor entryway and the north side of the mezzanine.    

Sandglass Theater brings it’s newest piece to the New England Youth Theatre in Brattleboro for a special two-night limited engagement to kick off our national tour. D-Generation: An Exaltation of Larks is a full-length theater piece based on stories written collaboratively by groups of people with late-stage dementia. The work is performed by three puppeteers (the caregivers) and five puppets (the residents of a care-facility). Set to a compelling original score and striking animated video segments, D-Generation takes us into a world that is all too much a part of our lives.

SAXTONS RIVER – It’s déjà vu all over again at Main Street Arts as it reprises its 1999 production of the musical “Kiss Me, Kate,” opening Friday, March 1 for a two-week run.

This rollicking version of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” features such memorable Cole Porter tunes as “Another Openin’, Another Show,” “I Hate Men,” and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”

The Brattleboro Rotary Club is raising money to help upgrade the radio station KILI, a non-profit radio station broadcasting to the Lakota people on the Pine Ridge, Cheyenne River, and Rosebud Indian Reservations, part of the Great Sioux Nation in South Dakota.

On Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 4-8PM at the New England Youth Theatre, the Brattleboro Rotary Club will be sponsoring the fourth annual “International Film & Food Festival,” with proceeds benefiting KILI which serves 30,000 people on the three reservations and seeks to preserve Native American culture and instill pride in the peoples’ unique heritage.
