53rd Labor Day Weekend Festival: Organ Recital & Orchestra Lawn Concert

Guilford, Vt. – As it has done for over a half-century, Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG) opens its 53rd annual music season with a concert in a rural barn on Saturday night of Labor Day Weekend. The Organ Barn is in an idyllic setting near the state line where Guilford meets Leyden, Massachusetts. The intimate Barn seats close to a hundred concertgoers, and on Sunday afternoon, two hundred or more people flock to the lawn outside the Barn for picnicking and an orchestra concert.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of traditional song and dance from southern Africa by Black Umfolosi at Next Stage on Friday, August 24 at 7:30 pm.

Black Umfolosi is a self taught A cappella (Imbube) singing and traditional dance group that was formed in 1982 by school friends in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe who wanted to develop themselves and contribute to their community.

Doiminic speaks both English and Irish, and hails from a Donegal Gaeltacht. His earliest local influences include Caitlín Ní Dhomhnaill, Lillis Ó Laoire, Áine Bn. Uí Laoi, Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh and his mother Nellie Nic Giolla Bhríde.

Doiminic studied music at University, picking up pipes and accordion along the way, while remaining true to his original influences by pursuing a path as a singer. He has performed to audiences in Ireland and across the world and worked with some of the best in traditional music!

August 19: Christ Church 200th Birthday Gala

Guilford, Vt. — Guilford’s historic Christ Church, at the corner of Rt. 5 and Melendy Hill Rd., is celebrating its 200th birthday this year with a Benefit Concert and Silent Auction. Festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19. Proceeds will provide critical funding for the Christ Church Guilford Society to maintain and improve the building, which has not had a resident congregation since the 1890s.

Internationally renowned instrumentalists Jaime Laredo and Lucy Chapman, violin; Kim Kashkashian, viola; Merry Peckham and Sharon Robinson, cello; and James Winn, flute, will share the stage with Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, who has written a commemorative poem for the occasion.

Although this story came out (in Fodor’s of all places) almost a year ago, it’s an interesting read and especially so since it’s about our very own Brattleboro, Vermont.  “The Magic of Brattleboro, Vermont, According to King Tuff,” by interviewer Rachael Roth, describes our town through the eyes of a young musician who was raised here and still maintains strong ties to the area.  is his name, and he makes good music, if you haven’t heard him already.  He’s signed to the major indie label Sub Pop Records out of Seattle.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project

The Vermont Jazz Center presents Eugene Uman’s Convergence Project on June 9th at 8:00 PM.  The Director of the VJC, Uman and uses the Convergence Project as vehicle to present his original compositions and music that has influenced him – it includes Wanda Houston (vocals), Michael Zsoldos, saxophones; Jeff Galindo, trombone; Uman, piano; David Picchi, bass (electric and acoustic) and Jon Fisher on drums. There will also be surprise musical guests performing at this event.

After many musically formative years in Colombia, South America, Uman became drawn to blending the many rhythms of the country, such as cumbia, bambuco and pasillo, with jazz harmonies. While living in Antioquia, the Big Band of Medellín commissioned Uman to write for their 20-piece orchestra, resulting in Blues para Urabá. 

A Cappella à la Carte on June 8: Supper and Songs

Guilford, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG) presents its 52nd season finale on Friday, June 8, an annual three-part event dubbed “A Cappella à la Carte.” Set at two neighboring churches in the Algiers village of Guilford, just over a mile south of Exit 1 off I-91, the evening’s menu includes a short meeting, a potluck picnic, and a 7:30 concert of vocal music. Each optional segment is open to the general public; admission to the concert is by donation.

Beginning at 6 p.m. in Christ Church, at the corner of Melendy Hill Rd. and Rt. 5 south, the FOMAG Annual Membership Meeting is typically short and entertaining, and offers a summary of the year, a look ahead to next season, and election of the board of trustees.

Singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist, producer and Grammy nominee Seth Glier is renowned for his fearless vocal delivery, musical exuberance and seasoned songwriting beyond his years.  A troubadour in every sense of the word who averages over 150 live performances annually, 29 year-old Glier has gone from opening act to headlining his own shows and playing major festivals.  He’s shared the stage with artists as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Edwin McCain, Martin Sexton, Emmylou Harris and Ryan Adams, and has quickly become known for his passionate live sets and powerful command of both piano and guitar.

John Gorka at Next Stage on Sunday, May 20

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present contemporary folk singer/songwriter John Gorka at Next Stage on Sunday, May 20 at 7:30 pm.  The concert celebrates the release of John’s brand new CD “True in Time.”

John Gorka is perhaps the quintessential iconic singer/songwriter of the 1980’s folk scene.  Hailing from New Jersey, he honed his craft and persona as a shy, wry and insightful singer/songwriter in the Greenwich Village “Fast Folk”  and Boston music scenes.  Gorka got his start at Godfrey Daniels, a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania, which is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions in the country.

May 27: “Mostly Baroque” Organ Barn Concert

Guilford, Vt. — Friends of Music at Guilford’s 10th annual Spring Organ Recital is set for 3:00 in the afternoon on Sunday, May 27, in the barn at Tree Frog Farm, off Packer Corners Rd. in idyllic rural Guilford. The c. 1897 Tracker Organ was moved from Maine by FOMAG founder A. Graham Down (1929-2014), who invested in its restoration and improvements over the years, and performed the first concerts on it beginning in 1966.

By tradition, each FOMAG season opens with a concert in the barn on Labor Day Weekend, and for the past decade this May event has offered a second annual opportunity to celebrate the organization’s roots. This year’s featured performer is David Neiweem, college organist and carillonneur at the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he teaches vocal studies, conducting, and music education, and is director of choirs. He is also music director at the First Congregational Church of Burlington and director of Vermont’s Aurora Chamber Singers.

History Teaches member Ron Schneiderman of Brattleboro has been a formative influence on the psychedelia of the New Weird America non-genre and its offshoots. In addition to his own music, he’s run specialty labels and distribution, and co-organized the Brattleboro Free Folk Festival with Matt Valentine in the early 2000s.
