Twilight on the Tavern Lawn presents the Julian Gerstin Sextet on Sunday, July 28

Twilight Music continues its 17th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, zydeco, Celtic, jazz, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 28 with the Julian Gerstin Sextet performing original jazz influenced by rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.  The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25.  All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain.  The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Green Mountain Well, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney area businesses and organizations.  The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.  For more information, call 802-387-5772 or visit www.twilightmusic.org.

River Garden Brown Bag Lunch Series Continues!

Strolling of the Heifers has announced the schedule for its Brown Bag Lunch at the River Garden series for the week of Mon. 7/29– Fri. 8/02. This week, join us for a discussion of Emotional Wellness and Diabetes Prevention, The Wonder and Gift of Reiki ,What We Can Learn From Horses, music with Mr. Blair, a group sing along with Rich Grumbine and more!

All Brown Bag Lunch events take place from noon to 1 p.m. at the Robert H Gibson River Garden, 157 Main St., Brattleboro, and are free and open to the public.

Brattleboro Town School Board Dissolution and Next Steps

Because of school district consolidation under Act 46, the Brattleboro Town School District’s five-member school board was dissolved on June 30th. As of July 1st, the board of the merged district, the Windham Southeast School District (WSESD), will make policy and budget planning decisions for Academy School, Green Street School, Oak Grove School and Early Education Services, as well as the five other schools of the merged district.

Information about times and locations of WSESD meetings, along with contact information for board members, is available on WSESD Board’s page on the Supervisory Union (WSESU) website at http://www.wsesu.org under the school boards menu. Meetings will rotate between schools. The next WSESD meeting is at 6pm on July 24 at Putney Central School. The next WSESD meeting taking place in Brattleboro is scheduled for August 7 at 6pm at Academy School.

Movement 2019: Art from 7 Years of the Southern Vermont Dance Festival

From July 18-21, the 7th annual Southern Vermont Dance Festival (SVDF) is celebrating the breadth and beauty of movement with a four-day schedule of classes, performances, community events, and more in Brattleboro. Preparing the way is “MOVEMENT 2019,” a multi-venue installation of twelve exhibits featuring diverse movement-inspired art work. Some pieces will be for sale.

Thursday July 18th the Southern Vermont Dance Festival will present its Opening Gala Concert at 4:30pm at the Latchis Theater on 50 Main St, in Brattleboro, Vermont. This performance will involve both upbeat as well as works with more serious themes. This kick-off event to the four-day festival is perfect for dance lovers and families alike, featuring many exciting genres of dance and high quality choreography from all over the world. The festival’s choreographers have come from every corner of the country to share new and revived work! There will be works in modern, ballet, fusion dance and more!

West Brattleboro, Vt. — On Saturday, July 6, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., the All Souls Arts Committee invites the general public to an opening reception for “Bitter & Sweet: An Artist’s Journey,” the new show installed in the church’s foyer and other gallery spaces through the end of August.

Featured artist Sylvia Chun Yin Ryder was born in Taiwan. It was obvious from an early age that she was artistically gifted, and she chose Fine Arts for her major at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei. Soon after, however, she decided to pursue ballet as a career. While this choice didn’t fully blossom as she had hoped, she did share her interest as a part-time dance teacher for awhile.

Twenty years ago when my eldest daughter started college, the cost of tuition, fees and room and board at a non-profit private university was $31,590 per year, or $126,360 for four years. The cost of tuition and fees at a four-year public non-profit college was $5,020 per year or $20,080 if the student finished in four years. These sums seemed astronomical then, as they still do now. We worried about how we’d be able to afford this on our modest Vermont incomes since our youngest was to begin the following year as well. Both girls wanted to go to school in Boston and had been accepted to the colleges of their choice. This was a new experience for us, sending our children away to college.
