Justice For Plow Drivers
UNION ACTION ALERT: Castleton DPW workers with AFSCME Local 1201 of the AFL-CIO (those that plow the roads and operate the wastewater plant) have been without a contract or raises for over two years. While these Union members continue to fight for justice, we need to let the Castleton Select Board know THIS IS NOT OK and Local 1201 does not stand alone (and that Vermonters from all over the state stand with them). Please contact the Castleton Select Board today and leave a message for Selectman Jim Leamy. Tell Jim: “Jim Leamy, I am a working Vermonter too, and I stand with DPW Union employees. Fair contract now!”
Indigenous Peoples Day “Civil Rights For All” Banner Raising
Civil Rights for All Banner Raising for Indigenous Peoples Day week: 8am-9am, Sunday, October 7th, 2018, at the corner of Main Street and High Street, Brattleboro, VT, 05301.
The Fire Company will raise the “We Celebrate Democracy / Civil Rights For All” banner over Main Street on Sunday the seventh of October at 8 am. The eighth is Brattleboro’s Indigenous People’s Day. Democracy is our problem, and the answer to our problems. You can stand up for democracy on the 5 occasions each year when the banner goes up over Main Street.
16th Annual Heirloom Apple Day at Scott Farm Orchard
Heirloom Apple Day at Scott Farm Orchard in Dummerston, VT beckons apple lovers of all ages to celebrate its many varieties of heirloom apples at this free annual event on Sunday, October 7 from 10am-4pm. Come visit the 571-acre historic farm and orchard and experience heirloom apples fresh, baked and squeezed!
In addition to the popular apple talks and tastings, hard cider tastings by Whetstone Ciderworks of Marlboro, VT, and food vendors, new activities are in store for families. Enjoy fiddle music by Molly Durling of Putney from 10AM-2PM, an art station for kids, and dry stone wall tours, at 11AM, 1 & 3PM, led by The Stone Trust of the Master Features Park and the stonewalls that enhance the grounds.

VT Listening Project: The Hidden Side of Women’s Lives in Our Community
Join Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, September 26 at 6 pm as the Vermont Commission on Women presents: The Hidden Side of Women’s Lives, a special event highlighting their statewide listening project, which is designed to help voice the concerns of women around the state. Breakfast at the Brattleboro VFW Sept. 22nd Public Welcome
The VFW will be having a breakfast Saturday Sept. 22nd from 8 am – 10:30 am. This is not a buffet, but you may choose to purchase eggs made to order, sausage, bacon, tater tots, toast, homemade sausage gravy over biscuits, and pancakes with real maple syrup. This will be on the canteen side, not the hall side.

An Excess of Roadkill in Brattleboro
I’ve had an opportunity to drive around a bit more than usual, and one thing that pretty clear: there are a lot of dead animals on the road right now.
Skunks and squirrels seem to be the primary victims. They are all over, but also concentrated in some places. There’s a spot on Putney Rd where quite a few have failed to make it all the way across. There’s a place along Rt 30 near the bridge that also seems to have a bit of a pileup.
