I-91 Exit 3 On-Ramps Closed Memorial Day

On Memorial Day (Monday, May 25), both the Northbound and Southbound Exit 3 on-ramps will be closed from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM to reduce congestion on I-91 Southbound caused by merging traffic. Because of highway logistics, we need to close both northbound and southbound on-ramps. Local southbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 South to Exit 1, and local northbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 North to Exit 4. Sheriff officers will assist in directing traffic.

Brattleboro Memorial Day Closings

In observance of Memorial Day, all Brattleboro town offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2015, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25, 2015. All other violations, including extended parking, will be enforced.

Brattleboro Area Hospice Invites All to Annual Memorial Planting Service

On Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 4:00 pm, Brattleboro Area Hospice will host its 18th Annual Memorial Planting Service. The event will take place at the Hospice Memorial Garden located at Living Memorial Park on Guilford Street in Brattleboro. The public is encouraged to attend.

The community is invited to join together to honor and remember loved ones who have died by planting flowers, painting memorial messages on stones to be placed in the garden, and by listening to the music of the Hallowell singers.

Solar Workshop Offered

Learn the basics of solar at this free informational workshop, featuring a presentation by Kirk Shields of Green Mountain Power. Attendees will learn the advantages of solar electric systems, and about the different types of systems that are available, including community solar. Local installers will be on hand to answer questions about solar and its affordability.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of May 17

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

Night work adjacent to Route 30 will continue this week, but will not affect traffic.

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Bratt Area Techies To Meet May 21

The Brattleboro Area Techies will meet May 21st, 5:30pm at the Estey Millworks Building in Brattleboro. The meeting will be at #118-201 Birge Street in Brattleboro.

Everyone is invited who works with, or is interested in, technology in the Brattleboro area, from makers to programmers to artists.

We’ll meet at Estey Millworks, a huge, mostly empty building behind the Estey Organ factory. This is one of the better options we’ve seen in town for a possible community makerspace. The building has three 4000 sq foot floors, power, heat, a spray booth, freight elevator, views, and a loading dock. Right now a two-person custom furniture company, esteymillwork.com, is the only tenant. They are interested in filling up the building somehow with other maker-type folk.

Bill tracks 9/11 Commission recommendation to make public the top line budgets of 16 federal intelligence agencies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT), Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) have introduced legislation that would require the president to disclose in the annual budget request to Congress the top line spending levels at the 16 federal agencies known to conduct intelligence activities. Top-line spending levels for federal intelligence activities are currently treated as classified information.

The fourth installment of the 2014 Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on May 15, 2015 by 5:00 PM. Payments made after May 15, 2015 will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty added to the unpaid balance.

‘They Were Wrong Then. They’re Wrong Now,’ Sanders Says of Trade Deal Backers

WASHINGTON, May 12 – In a Senate floor speech today opposing a proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) recited a litany of bogus claims by previous trade deal backers which turned out to be wildly inaccurate.

Backers of the North American Free Trade Agreement, Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China and other business-backed trade deals claimed that they would generate jobs in the United States. In fact, economists now say, those pacts were a major reason why some 60,000 American factories closed since the turn of the century as manufacturers shifted jobs to low-wage nations overseas.

“These folks have been proven wrong time after time after time,” Sanders said.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Alicia Olatuja

The Vermont Jazz Center is delighted to welcome vocalist Alicia Olatuja and her quartet on May 16th at 8:00 PM. This sublime singer is best known for her soaring solo with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Obama’s second inauguration. But even though she grew up in the church, loves the music and draws inspiration from it, Alicia’s voice and persona are expansive. Winston Prouty Center Hosts Indoor Mini-Golf Classic Grownups and Families on May 16

Winston Prouty Center for Child Development is hosting its Inaugural Indoor Mini-Golf Classic for grownups and families on Saturday, May 16, 2015 and Sunday, May 17, 2015, respectively. The two-day “FUN-raiser” is open to the public.

Saturday’s tournament for grownups is a black-tie optional evening that will feature light dinner fare, music, and a cash bar. The tournament will be from 6 to 9 p.m. and tickets are $25 per person.

Sunday’s family fun day will take place from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person, or only $12 for a foursome if you bring your Saturday night scorecard.
Both events will take place at the International Center at World Learning’s SIT campus in Brattleboro.
