PUTNEY, VT—This year the 36th Annual Putney Craft Tour slated for Thanksgiving Weekend is not only a Top Ten Winter event as named by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, but also is helping to fight hunger in the community. The tour is partnering with the Putney Foodshelf by using art to support food for those who are in need.
The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library are seeking donations of “like new” and good condition hardback and paperback books for their Holiday Book Sale to be held on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6.
If you have books that are in good condition and that you are willing to donate to the Library please contact Therese Marcy at 254-5290 x 106.
Proceeds from the Holiday Book Sale will go to support the purchase of books, materials and equipment for the Library and the Children’s Room.
PUTNEY- On November 7th and 8th at 7:30pm, Sandglass welcomes the Dolly Wagglers from Northern Vermont, with their brand new Work in Progress, Gross Bliss. This new piece of puppet theater is a hilarious look at the terror of modern life and the wisdom of swamp plants.
Two aspiring and clumsy artists are in search of examples of true happiness. The quest brings them far and wide to visit “happy” events. One of which is the blooming of a swamp flower. They realize that pure bliss is somewhat gross. The more “happy” things they see and experience the more exasperated they become, eventually declaring happiness to be, among other things, a rainbow that you can’t even see when you are actually in it.

Hungrytown is the musical and married duo of Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson. They have released two highly acclaimed CDs, Hungrytown (2008) and Any Forgotten Thing (2011), both of which continue to receive much airplay on folk and Americana stations worldwide. BRATTLEBORO, VT (November 3)—The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus served up a memorable night of song, advocacy, and community spirit in front of a capacity crowd at the Latchis Theatre on Saturday night, November 1st. The sold-out event helped raise more than $25,000 for the Brattleboro Retreat’s LGBT Program, now in its 5th year of serving the LGBTQ community.
As a part of the evening’s program, the Retreat presented Representative Bill Lippert of Hinesburg with the hospital’s 2014 Anna Marsh Award in recognition of his advocacy on behalf of people with mental illness or addiction.
An American Nurse At War is the title of a documentary film to be shown on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at 2:30 pm for the annual meeting and program of the Brattleboro Historical Society at the Brattleboro History Center located in the Masonic Center building at 196 Main Street, Brattleboro.
The film chronicles the experience of Marion McCune Rice of Brattleboro who went to France one hundred years ago to care for injured soldiers during World War I. Rice was born in Brattleboro in 1882 and graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1900 before attending Smith College and nursing school at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was the sister of Howard Crosby Rice, longtime publisher of the Brattleboro Reformer, and spent summers at her home on Chestnut Hill.

On Saturday night, November 8th Sounds True recording artist Yofiyah brings her Kabbalah Kirtan ensemble to the Vermont Jazz Center in Brattleboro, Vermont. Kabbalah Kirtan is a unique fusion of Jewish, Middle Eastern and Indian melodies with audience participation via call-and-response singing, along with musical accompaniment.
“Kabbalah Kirtan brings a musical experience that joyously celebrates ´da ´at d´vekut´, union with the oneness of all.”, explains Yofiyah. Revered Rabbi Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi called Yofiyah and her style of Kabbalah Kirtan “A marvelous gateway to the spirit, a true energizer of the soul.”
Close to 200 trick-or-treaters combed the Forest Square section of Brattleboro on Halloween. As is tradition, here’s your official 2014 list of costumes. Apologies to those we missed or got wrong, and thanks to all for all the original and entertaining ideas that kids had this year.
One notable trend: Star Wars is back. Other trends include parents getting more involved, nerds, and Robin Hoods.

Not sure why Europe reveres jazz from America seemingly more than Americans themselves, but I’m thankful for all of the Italian recordings, and here, French film of groups like this at that time.
I remember Galway as a man of action, conviction, and kindness. Some years ago I had spoken to him about our mutual poet friend Hayden Carruth, and Hayden never receiving the recognition that he deserved as one of the truly great Vermont poets. I had suggested that Hayden should be recognized as a state poet laureate, but the state wouldn’t offer that recognition. Galway quietly said, “Let’s see what we can do.”
November’s exhibit in the Gallery at the Garden (Robert H. Gibson River Garden, 157 Main St.) features works by painter and set designer Clay Coyle in a show titled Fresh Paint: Reflections of Color in Landscapes and Trees.
Concurrently, the River Garden, home of Strolling of the Heifers, will host an exhibit of historical materials from the archives of Kurn Hattin Homes for Children, the Westminster residential school for children at-risk or in need. Established in 1894, Kurn Hattin serves boys and girls, ages 5-15, who are affected by tragedy, social or economic hardship, or other disruption in family life.
Now a resident of Venice, Florida, Coyle maintains a studio in Putney and just recently moved from his S. Londonderry, Vermont homestead which he had kept since 1980. Clay has actively painted and worked on set and lighting design since he entered Williams College in 1968. He graduated in 1972, winning the Gilbert W. Gabriel Prize in Drama for his design and technical work. From Williams he headed to New York City where he designed sets for the Classic Stage Company, the New Dramatists Inc., the Producer’s Association for Young America, the Spanish Repertory Company, and others.

Poets Baron Wormser and Michael Fleming will read from their works in the Library’s meeting room on Wednesday, October 29, beginning at 7 PM. Baron Wormser is the author of a memoir, The Road Washes Out in Spring: A Poet’s Memoir of Living Off the Grid, a novel, Teach Us That Peace, nine books of poetry and three books of non-fiction. Michael Fleming is a creative editor, essayist, novelist, and poet.
On November 1st at 8:00 PM, The Vermont Jazz Center will present 3-time Grammy Winner, Jeff Coffin, saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band and Béla Fleck’s Flecktones. At the VJC, he’ll be performing with the Mu’tet, a group that reflects Coffin’s philosophy that “music must change and mutate in order to evolve.” Their repertoire consists of catchy tunes set over an array of complex feels: deep funk, New Orleans, Latin and swing. Their sound is propelled by rhythms you’ve never heard before and imbued with world music influences. The surprise factor is that the compositions are often in odd meters, delivered over precise, danceable grooves.
WESTMINSTER, VT—Kurn Hattin Homes for Children will hold a public reception to celebrate the unveiling of a new historical exhibit entitled, A Legacy of Caring: Adapting to the Changing Needs of Children and Families. All are welcome to attend Thursday, November 6 from 5:30 – 7:00 PM at the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, 157 Main St. Brattleboro.
This opening reception will be hosted by Kurn Hattin Homes for Children’s Executive Director, Connie Sanderson, and will feature a brief presentation and Q and A session. Refreshments will be provided.

Several times a year the Vatican has children release and let fly white doves over the crowds in St. Peter’s Square as signs of peace. During one such release the horrified crowds witnessed a mid-air attack by a hungry crow and seagull when they killed the pope’s blessed doves.
To prevent this brutal contraindication of papal peace, the Swiss Guard acquired a female Harris Hawk with a four-foot wingspan. Like Michael armed with a sword in his hand, the hawkeyed bird of prey perches at the ready to slay these winged dragons who dare to publicly eat the holy symbols of peace.
