SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – The Vermont Jazz Center Sextet makes a return visit to Main Street Arts in a performance Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. featuring the music of some of the greats of jazz.
Works by Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Art Blakey, mixed in with some original music and arrangements written by members of the ensemble, promise an up tempo experience for lovers of jazz.
Next Stage Arts Project is thrilled to present Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens on Saturday, September 14 at 7:30 pm, returning to Next Stage after rocking the house for sold out crowds at their two previous appearances.
Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens are an American gospel and soul music group led by front woman Naomi Shelton. The group was formed in 1999. They have released two albums with Daptone Records, What Have You Done, My Brother? (2009) and Cold World (2014).
The Vermont Jazz Center is thrilled to kick off its 2019-20 concert season with a very special concert on Saturday, September 14th at 8:00 PM featuring the Steve Turre Quintet. Come hear Turre perform on trombone and conch shells with Bruce Williams on saxophone and flute, Oscar Perez on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass and Orion Turre on drums. Steve Turre is regarded as one of the finest jazz trombonists in the world. His on-going recording and performing career has included fertile tenures with Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers to name a few. This year he is celebrating 36 years as trombonist in the Saturday Night Live band. Turre has made records with a highly diverse group of artists ranging from Dizzy Gillespie, Celia Cruz, Etta Jones, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach and John Scofield, to Carlos Santana and Mariah Carey.

VFW Post #1034 will be having their POW/MIA dinner dance Saturday, Sept. 14th. Doors open at 5 pm, dinner served at 6 pm, and dance begins at 7 pm. $10 charge will be for the dinner & dance, or $5 for the dance only after the meal is over. Dinner will be applesauce, garlic roast pork, baked potato, roasted veggies, and blueberry dessert. Reservations are needed by Thursday, Sept. 12th.
The Brattleboro Post #1034 Auxiliary will be having a karaoke Friday, Sept. 13th. Doors open at 6 pm, and karaoke starts at 7 pm. $5 cover charge

Youth bands and solo artists from around New England are gearing up to take the stage at the Fourth Annual Brattleboro Youth Rock Festival. BrattRock 2019 comes to 118 Elliot in downtown Brattleboro on Saturday, September 28. Gates open at 2:30 PM and performances take place on two stages, one indoor and one outdoor, between 3:00 and 10:00 PM.
In addition to non-stop live music, the festival features food vendors, interactive performances by the New England Center for Circus Arts, crafts and games, and plenty of family fun. All are invited to attend this all-ages community event.
Do you have a kid or know a kid who loves to draw and wants to get really, really good at it? The Drawing Studio is offering a Drawing Skills for Older Kids (9 and up) class on Thursdays from 330 to 5 beginning September 19th. There will be a healthy snack, lots of drawing materials and all the help they need to fulfill their drawing visions. Kids will also be given a sketch box and sketch book so they can work at home or during a boring Algebra class.
Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) presents the 21st annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Zhongqiu Jie) which is celebrated in China, Korea, Vietnam and other places around the world. Celebrate the Autumn Moon Festival with crafts, songs, food, taiji, paper lanterns, Chinese exercises, the Korean rope tug and more.
Shoot the Moon Theater Company has earned a reputation for out-of-the-box presentations during its four years as the company in-residence at the Hooker Dunham Theater, but this next project may be their boldest yet.
White Rabbit Red Rabbit is an internationally acclaimed one-person play by Nassim Soleimanpour with very rigid guidelines for how it can be performed. The first being that the actor is not allowed to read the script until they open the sealed copy waiting for them on stage.

BRATTLEBORO, VT – The Baker Street Readers will return to the Hooker-Dunham Theater for a second season of dramatic readings of Sherlock Holmes stories this fall.
In their first season, the Readers presented a short story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original collection “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” once a month from January to June. Each reading featured Tony Grobe as John Watson and James Gelter as Sherlock Holmes. The first season alone included twenty guest performers and reached an audience of more than three hundred.
Guilford, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford’s (FOMAG) 54th Labor Day Weekend Festival begins, by tradition, with a 7:30 concert on Saturday night, August 31, in The Organ Barn at Tree Frog Farm in idyllic rural Guilford. Organist Robert Barney, who is related to several Guilford families, performs a program entitled “Bach: Friends & Family” with assistance from Boston soprano Janna Maria Fröhlich and Vermont flutist Amara Cunningham. Then, at 2:00 on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1, the Guilford Festival Orchestra performs “European Tour,” a program of works by French and German composers, some with an Italian flair. Kenneth Olsson conducts over forty instrumentalists from the region and beyond, as well as soprano soloist Julie Olsson.

Twilight Music concludes its 17th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, zydeco, Celtic, jazz, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, August 25 with folk and Americana trio Low Lily. The seventh and final concert of the 2019 series begins at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain.
