Longtime friend Joe Crompton passed away under the full moon.
You know Joe if you shopped at the Co-op. He was the sausage-making meat expert in the butcher area.
You know Joe if you worked at the Co-op. He kept a constant eye on management and was a leading advocate for the union. He spent many a year trying to get better situations for employees, which paid off in recent years with a succesful union vote.
Everyone is welcome to join Governor Phil Scott, members of the Cabinet, and the Brattleboro Selectboard, from 10:30 – 11:30 am on Tuesday, Oct. 23, for a special meeting in the Community Meeting Room at Brooks Memorial Library. Discussion topics will include (but might not be limited to):

Many people in Brattleboro are aware that opioids and other drugs harm some of our community members. One organization that works on this problem is the Brattleboro Area Prevention Coalition, or BAPC, for short. Among other things, BAPC members help facilitate the collection of unused opioids like oxycontin, so that they can be removed from Brattleboro, and disposed of; help smokers who want to quit find the resources to do so; help local bars train their staff so that they don’t accidentally serve teenagers; teach young children how to avoid getting poisoned by pills that look like candy, and many other harm-prevention related activities.
Join us on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, from 1:30 – 2:15 pm as Tax Commissioner Kaj Samsom, and Tax Economist and Director of Policy Douglas Farnham, offer a brainstorming session about efficiencies, and discuss possible changes to legislation regarding Land Gains Tax.

A health care crisis is looming in this country, and it is essential for baby boomers to understand what they need to do to prepare for it financially.
Brattleboro, Vermont – November 9-11th, an anticipated 75 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people living in small towns and rural communities from around the Northeast will gather for the fourth annual Out in the Open Summit for rural & small town LGBTQ folks.
Out in the Open is convened by Brattleboro, Vermont-based Green Mountain Crossroads (GMC), whose mission is to connect rural LGBTQ people to build community, visibility, knowledge, and power. Summit attendance is open to any LGBTQ-identified person of rural and/or small town experience. People attended the 2017 event from communities near and far including: California, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.
I thought it was just us. All summer long, mildew seemed to be taking hold all over the house. As we packed boxes and got furniture ready to be moved, we wiped mildew off off just about everything.
We did have incredibly high humidity all summer long, and some tropical days for sure. But this seemed a bit extreme. It was as if you’d wipe mildew off a surface and it would start right back.
Brian Bannon sent along the following PDF drawing of the proposed plans for the ski jump at Living Memorial Park. It features a new wooden inrun trestle (the jump) and an altered hill profile (landing).
Much of the work is to prepare the hill, including installing silt fences to help with erosion, clearing the hillside, stripping the topsoil, re-grading, and re-seeding. The structure ends near the ballfield, and the bleachers will be moved.

Windham County Legislative Candidates’ Forum on Health Care & Human Rights is happening tonight at the Centre Congregational Church parlor, 193 Main St., Brattleboro. UNION ACTION ALERT: Castleton DPW workers with AFSCME Local 1201 of the AFL-CIO (those that plow the roads and operate the wastewater plant) have been without a contract or raises for over two years. While these Union members continue to fight for justice, we need to let the Castleton Select Board know THIS IS NOT OK and Local 1201 does not stand alone (and that Vermonters from all over the state stand with them). Please contact the Castleton Select Board today and leave a message for Selectman Jim Leamy. Tell Jim: “Jim Leamy, I am a working Vermonter too, and I stand with DPW Union employees. Fair contract now!”
Civil Rights for All Banner Raising for Indigenous Peoples Day week: 8am-9am, Sunday, October 7th, 2018, at the corner of Main Street and High Street, Brattleboro, VT, 05301.
The Fire Company will raise the “We Celebrate Democracy / Civil Rights For All” banner over Main Street on Sunday the seventh of October at 8 am. The eighth is Brattleboro’s Indigenous People’s Day. Democracy is our problem, and the answer to our problems. You can stand up for democracy on the 5 occasions each year when the banner goes up over Main Street.
Heirloom Apple Day at Scott Farm Orchard in Dummerston, VT beckons apple lovers of all ages to celebrate its many varieties of heirloom apples at this free annual event on Sunday, October 7 from 10am-4pm. Come visit the 571-acre historic farm and orchard and experience heirloom apples fresh, baked and squeezed!
In addition to the popular apple talks and tastings, hard cider tastings by Whetstone Ciderworks of Marlboro, VT, and food vendors, new activities are in store for families. Enjoy fiddle music by Molly Durling of Putney from 10AM-2PM, an art station for kids, and dry stone wall tours, at 11AM, 1 & 3PM, led by The Stone Trust of the Master Features Park and the stonewalls that enhance the grounds.
