Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – December 2 2014

The usefulness and need of the West Brattleboro Fire Station will be discussed at the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.

The organization formerly known as Building a Better Brattleboro will present their annual request for funds from the Downtown Improvement District, the board will talk about the budget being created, the Energy Committee will give an annual report and ask for their annual funding to be considered by Town Meeting Representatives, and there will be a discussion about whether Chris Chapman should be given time on a future agenda, once again, to present his thoughts on Town Fundraising to the board.

You can watch it all on BCTV, or attend in person and participate. You can even bring up other items that aren’t on the agenda during Public Participation. We’ll write it all up and you can read all the details here after the meeting.

Vermont Author Gary Miller: Reading & Book Signing at Brooks Library

On Monday, December 1 at 7 pm, the Library will host a reading and book signing for Vermont author Gary Lee Miller’s short story collection Museum of the Americas. The event will be in the Meeting Room on the Library’s 2nd Floor, and is free and open to the public.

Praised by Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea as “art in its truest sense,” as well as in Seven Days and on WDEV Radio’s Mark Johnson Show, Miller’s debut collection explores the mysteries of the past—and of the human heart. Miller is well known in Vermont as the co-producer of the documentary films Rookies at the Road, which tells the story of Barre’s Thunder Road racetrack, and Act of Faith, which explores the making of the Jay Craven feature film Disappearances.

Researchers Determine There Will Be A Visitation From The Stars On The Saturday Nearest The Solstice

According to prominent scientists at the University of Brattleboro, there will be a “visitation” to Brattleboro on the Saturday closest to the solstice. With realtive pinpoint accuracy, they predict that it will be seen some near Elliot Street or Flat Street, sometime after Sunset, probably close to 6 O’clock.

Weekend Concert Series: Jamiroquai in Glasgow

So, I’m in Boston and my friends want to go to a Holiday Inn to listen to a DJ. I’m not looking forward to it, but we get there and the music was really good. At one point, a song comes on that sounds like an old funk number… maybe something by a James Brown spin-off? Some female soul singer? I had to find out who it was.

It was Jamiroquai, said the DJ. I asked if it was from the 70’s or 80’s. He said it was current, in the late 90’s and the female singing wasn’t female. I was musically disoriented, and went to the record store to get the CD at my next opportunity.

44th Community Messiah Sing: A Benefit for the Homeless

Brattleboro, Vt. – Friends of Music at Guilford invites singers and music lovers in the Tri-State region to start their holiday season at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, with the 44th annual Community Messiah Sing, a benefit for the homeless. Centre Congregational Church, at 193 Main Street in Brattleboro, has been home for the Sing since 1982 and for a few prior seasons as well.

This year marks the return of conductor Terry Larsen for an eighth season at the helm after a few years’ hiatus. A music teacher in private and public schools for twenty-five years, Larsen was a member of the famed Chanticleer singers and director of the Napa Valley Symphony Chorus when he lived on the West Coast. Now a resident of Southampton, Mass., he has directed the Manchester (Conn.) Symphony Chorus and the Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus, and is director of the Schola Nova choral ensemble.

16th Annual Cotton Mill Open Studio and Holiday Sale at 74 Cotton Mill Hill, Brattleboro, VT on Saturday, December 6, 10am-6pm and Sunday, December 7, 10am-4pm.

It’s that time of year again to share in the holiday spirit with family, friends, and artists at the much anticipated 16th Annual Cotton Mill Open Studio and Holiday Sale, Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, 2014.

Everyone is invited to experience the hospitality of 25 resident artists, musicians, bakers, cooks, dancers, circus performers, and craftspeople of the Cotton Mill, and an additional 32 juried, local participating artists and artisans. Putney Grammar School’s K – 8 student art will also be on display. This is a festive event for the entire family. So much to see, so much to do, so much to sample and to buy!

Dinner and Hot Latin Jazz at Compass School Dec. 13th

WESTMINSTER, VT- On Saturday, December 13th, Compass School will host a Caribbean dinner and a musical performance by Eugene and Julian’s Latin Party Band featuring renowned musicians Eugene Uman and Julian Gerstin.

Eugene Uman is a pianist and composer who has performed with Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, George Mraz, Jimmy Heath, Donald Byrd, and many others. Uman has written over 120 wide ranging jazz compositions; three of his original compositions were recorded by Latin Jazz star Sammy Figueroa on his 2005 Grammy Nominated CD. Uman appears in numerous ensembles including The Convergence Project, the As Yet Quintet, and Zabap, and he is the director of the Vermont Jazz Center and serves as an adjunct professor of music at Amherst College and Marlboro College.

Nice Snow Coming Down in Brattleboro

For the moment, the snow falling outside looks quite wonderful. It’s somewhat heavy looking, falling fast and straight with occasional gusts to blow it around.

I have yet to think too much about shovelling it, and can just appreciate this first covering over of autmn remnants.

Check the for the latest in forecasts, don’t drive unless you absolutely have to, and have a safe and warm Thanksgiving. 

Brattleboro Parking Ban Ticket?

When I moved in to the town of Brattleboro in April, I went to the parking enforcement office to find out about the parking rules on my street. Carol Coulombe in that office said don’t worry about unless there is snow and not mentioning the winter parking ban. Well apparently Officer Hamilton went on a ticketing spree last night and I woke to a parking ticket and not a flake of snow.

Next Brattleboro Area Techies Meeting December 4

The holiday meeting of Brattleboro Area Techies will be held on December 4, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, at the office of Mondo Mediaworks in Brattleboro. All people who work with technology in the Brattleboro area are invited to attend. There is no cost.

Brattleboro Area Techies was formed as an networking group to bring technology people and makers together in an informal setting to discuss common issues and provide people with an excuse to get out from behind their computers.

Driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic stories. It’s theatrical and humorous. It’s musical and intense. It entertains, dazzles and defies classification while welcoming the spectator to join the band throughout the performance in momentary fits of claps, snaps and sing-alongs.
