Trivia Night at Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club To Benefit Brooks Library

Calling all trivia buffs and library supporters! This week, the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club’s Trivia Night will benefit the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library.

Please join us on Monday, Feb. 13th, 6:30 pm – 8:45 pm at the American Legion Hall, 32 Linden St., Brattleboro. Teams can consist of 4 to 6 players. Bring your friends or join a team when you arrive. Dinner is provided by Entera Catering, and a cash bar will be available as well. Admission is $20 and includes dinner and a donation to the Friends.

Dogs Die In Not-Too-Hot Cars

I am sharing this sad story so that citizens who find a dog locked in a car can share that dogs die in cars even on not so hot days.  Tragically, this dog died on a 70 degree F day after being left unattended for three hours. This occured in our neighborhood here in Palm Springs.

Now, if you find a dog locked in a car, and a police officer or store owner dismisses your concern with “it’s not that hot out” you can site this case as evidence to support your concern.  Of course science has proven this for years, but we continue to frame the problem as “dogs die in hot cars”.  Not always. 

Call for Chamber Singers to Perform on June 17

The Guilford Chamber Singers start rehearsals on February 27 in Brattleboro for their June 17 A Cappella à la Carte event. The Singers are sponsored by Friends of Music at Guilford (FOMAG), now in its 51st concert season. This program will present works by New England composers who have been featured in FOMAG concerts over the years, including at least three world premieres. Composers include Don McLean, Peter Amidon, and Anna Patton, as well as nationally renowned composers Alice Parker and Gwyneth Walker. There are openings for new and returning singers for

Feb. 25: HeartSoulVoice Performs Celtic, Shakespeare & More

Friends of Music at Guilford, now in its 51st concert season, will present its annual Midwinter Musicale program on Saturday, February 25, at Guilford Community Church, just over a mile from Exit 1 off the Interstate. The evening will begin with a pre-concert soup supper at 6 p.m., continue at 7 p.m. with a concert featuring the HeartSoulVoice duo from Boston, and be capped by a dessert reception.

The pre-concert light supper, included in the $12 admission fee, will offer hearty homemade soups, Vermont bread and cheese, salad, and fruit. An array of desserts will be served at a post-concert reception.

I am running for the three year seat and I want to serve a few more years to help assure the good progress we made over the past four years continues as new members gradually replace us.

I’ve served on a day care board, health center board, land trust board, school boards, union boards- lots of experience working with others to get things done that will help my neighbors. I’m a good listener, a strong advocate, I love learning new stuff, and I care a lot about what happens to people.

Brattleboro Downtown Snow Removal Friday Night

The Town of Brattleboro would like to remind everyone that the snow emergency ban is in effect.

Snow and ice will be removed from the streets in the downtown area this evening.

Parked vehicles in the downtown district must be removed by 11:00pm or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.

The set is dressed up, down to the smallest detail.  Actors are in place. The director cues lights, camera, slate, calls out, “Action”.  Everything animates, yet moments later, as if taking back time itself the director cries out, “Cut! Cut!..” By the furrow in their brow, everyone knows Maestro is not happy. Something is amiss.

In this instance, fictional as it may be, actors playing Nazis, (or Terrorists, or Banditos) despite being members of the ethnic group that are represented stereotypically, are not being authentic enough. They’re somehow not menacing, leering, or dark enough to satisfy the director’s vision. This auteur is known as a tyrant, goes for hyper-realism, stark verisimilitude.

Pets Welcome on Entire Vermonter Route

Amtrak announced the expansion of its pets program on the Vermonter, allowing more options for customers to travel with their pets. Small dogs and cats can now join their owners on the entire Vermonter route from Washington D.C. to St. Albans, VT, as long as the trip duration is no more than seven hours (see requirements). Previously, pets were not able to travel on the Connecticut portions of the route.

More than 15,000 pets and their human companions have traveled around the country since the program launched on the Northeast Corridor in October 2015. Record ridership was achieved for the month of July with more than 2,000 pets and owners traveling onboard. The program has also generated more than $1 million in revenue since its inception.

On 02/09/2017 at approximately 12:39 pm, members of the Vermont State Police (Westminster Station), VT DMV and the Brattleboro Fire Department responded to Interstate 91 (I91) in the Town of Brattleboro for a reported TT-Unit which had jackknifed and was blocking the southbound lane.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of February 13th

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, February 12th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (I-91 will remain open). Traffic conditions on both I-91 and through the town will be monitored closely throughout the day. Should traffic congestion become an issue, the ramps may be re-opened until traffic conditions improve. This will be managed actively throughout the day until peak traffic volumes have passed.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Christian Sands Trio

Christian Sands to Perform an Overview of Jazz-trio Piano History at the Vermont Jazz Center on Saturday, February 11th.

The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes the Christian Sands Trio to the stage on February 11, 2017 at 8:00 PM in eager anticipation of a guided tour through the colorful and exciting history of jazz piano. Sands is one of the top, young pianists of our time. Mentored personally by Dr. Billy Taylor, influenced by Barry Harris, Hank Jones and Oscar Peterson and apprenticed in the hot seat of Christian McBride’s trio, Christian Sands’ playing is steeped in the tradition–but not limited to–its constraints. He is comfortable playing old-school stride piano like Fats Waller, stretching out in a post-bop setting like McCoy Tyner or re-arranging a hip-hop anthem by Drake. Sands notes that “My music is about teaching the way of jazz and keeping it alive.” He will be performing with long-time associates Russell Hall on acoustic bass and Jerome Jennings on drums.

Snow Day 2017

This morning Brattleboro is being treated to a very nice snow storm. It’s a heavy, constant snow, covering up all the dirt and grime of the previous storm. For a moment, it looks like a calendar, or snow globe.

We’ve had four or five inches so far, and more is falling. Is the snow falling to the ground, or the ground rushing up to meet it?

When I first looked out this morning, I saw flakes that were hovering in mid-air over the street, just bouncing along at a height of about 8 feet with no intention of dropping. Others were choosing to drop, but a certain class of flakes would have nothing of it.

Your Old Car Can’t Pass the New Inspection Law? Turn it into a Gardening Green House!

While the Vermont state legislature might come up with another new proposed marijuana legalization bill, Vermonters who are low income are struggling with the new vehicle inspection law.

I would suggest that all old cars and vans which will not meet inspection requirements can be used to create a new product line: old vans and cars can be re-created into green houses, and meet requirements, if marijuana is legalized, for secure locked growing facilities.
