Vernon Street Area Closed for Emergency Scene Operations

As of 9:45 p.m. on June 24, the Brattleboro Fire Department is on the scene at 541 Vernon Street (Route #142) responding to an active hazardous material leak involving a railcar. There is no threat to the public at this time, but the area of Vernon Street is closed for emergency scene operations.

The Brattleboro Fire Department asks all community members to avoid the area. Detours have been established via Cotton Mill Hill Road to ensure your safety and the safety of emergency crews.

New Audio for Vermont African American Heritage Trail

Brattleboro, VT, 22 June 2024: New audio recordings created by multimedia artist Shanta Lee will enhance the visitor experience at selected sites on the Vermont African American Heritage Trail. These recordings resulted from a collaboration between the Brattleboro Words Trail and the Vermont African American Heritage Trail, will be shared on both sites, and can be viewed all together at: https://brattleboro.stqry.app/1/list/26097.

The recordings invite visitors to explore: the back stories of the Turner Family at Journey’s End in Grafton; the 54thRegiment sculpture of Black Civil War Soldiers in Rutland; Abijah and Lucy Terry Prince in Guilford; Black Civil War veterans buried in Woodstock; the Pullman Porters at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home in Manchester; the archives of Daisy Turner at the Vermont Folklife Center in Middlebury; Alexander Twilight at the Old Stone House Museum in Brownington; and freedom seekers at the Rokeby Museum in Ferrisburgh.

Nothing to Sneeze At

Remember when separation of church and state was a thing?  The original ‘build a wall’. Of course none of us were around when the deist founders wisely inserted that anti-persecutional notion into our country’s foundational documents. For two hundred and fifty years, the concept of a secular society in lieu of a religious one has been the official guiding principle of civic order.

But a tug of war, and erosion of this boundary has always been underway. ‘In God We Trust’ printed on money and statehouses…  Prayer and benediction at inaugurations, and openings and closings of Congressional sessions…Tax free churches…And now in Louisiana, an official declaration that the ten commandments must be printed and displayed in every classroom.

The Fear of Revenge

The fear of revenge is already having repercussions throughout the world. The credible threat by the American would-be lunatic dictator is being taken seriously and that means that free speech and freedom of expression are under siege. Make no mistake about it. Even though the election is not until November, the fear of a Trump win is making some people act as if he has already won and they don’t want to be on his enemies list.

A case in point has been made clear by New York Times columnist Michelle Golberg in the June 16 Times in her piece titled “The Trump Movie You May Never See”. The movie “The Apprentice” has been recently released. It focuses on the relationship between a young Donald Trump and Roy Cohn. Cohn was a notorious New York “fixer” and a hero worshipped by Trump. Some describe Cohn as Trump’s primary mentor. You only need to look at a picture of Cohn to get a creepy feeling of how evil he was.

MOOVER Moved For Today

The MOOVER Bus pick up/drop off point will be moved to Elliot Street on Friday, 6/21 starting immediately. Any of the public wanting to use the MOOVER transportation will use the sidewalk directly across from Brattleboro Fire Department for Pick up and drop off. All Moovers routes will be using this temporary location for the remainder of today. The pick up/drop off location will return to its original location tomorrow 6/22.

Fuller Park Public Forum Postponed to July 10

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the public forum at Fuller Park, which was originally scheduled for tonight, Thursday, June 20, has been postponed.

The public forum has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Fuller Park (also known as Esteyville Common), located at 115 Estey Street in Brattleboro. The rain date for this event is July 11, 2024, at the same time and location.

Fairground Road Sidewalk Replacement

The Highway Division will be replacing the sidewalk on the south side of Fairground Road between Canal Street and Atwood Street.  The project is slated to start on Monday, June 24, 2024 and is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete. Crews will be working weekdays, between 7:00am and 5:00pm.  During the project motorists should expect lane restrictions and delays in the area.  Please seek alternate routes.
