The Brattleboro Selectboard held their only meeting of July. Despite objections from many landlords, the board approved a new rental housing inspection program, and despite numerous statements of support they put off deciding on how best to deal with issues of sustainability.
New tax rates for FY20 were set, a 3-month day work pilot program was funded, Groundworks received $100,000 for housing, and more.

Oysters are salt-water bivalve molluscs that live in brackish marine habitats. Shells are highly calcified and irregular in shape. Oysters are consumed cooked or raw and are commonly regarded as a delicacy.
Starting Monday, July 8th, Hinesburg Road will be closed to through traffic in the area of 402 Hinesburg Rd. The closure is to install a new box culvert. Through traffic will be detoured across Mather Road to Bonnyvale Road, and through Lee Road. The detour will be marked. Residents within the closure will still have access to their homes.

The 4th of July brings us the stars and stripes and the sparkle of fireworks, evoking (among other things) America’s victory over Britain and “the rockets red glare.” But long after the last brilliant explosions have subsided, another kind of “fireworks” continues. These little bursts of light are significantly quieter — silent, in fact — but they can be just as impressive. I’m talking, of course, about the fireflies.

Twilight Music continues its 17th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, zydeco, Celtic, jazz, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 14 with high energy Scottish music bagpipes/fiddle/guitar trio Cantrip. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 25. Brattleboro’s new “Work Today” program for day labor will be explained and partially funded at Tuesday’s meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. Youth Services is taking the lead on this attempt to employ members of the community that have trouble finding steady work.
The board will take up the question of whether to create a Sustainability Officer position within town government, enact a rental housing inspection program, the town pool needs more repairs, tax rates will be set, goals will be reviewed, the library will get grants to help with local history, we’ll buy another pick-up truck, goals will be reviewed, committee members will be appointed, and more.
You can bring up other matters not on the agenda during public participation.
The Brattleboro Tree Advisory Committee will meet on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at 6:30pm at the Brattleboro Food Co-Op in the Community Room (located at 2 Main Street).

Featured artist Sylvia Chun Yin Ryder was born in Taiwan. It was obvious from an early age that she was artistically gifted, and she chose Fine Arts for her major at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei. Soon after, however, she decided to pursue ballet as a career. While this choice didn’t fully blossom as she had hoped, she did share her interest as a part-time dance teacher for awhile.

Twenty years ago when my eldest daughter started college, the cost of tuition, fees and room and board at a non-profit private university was $31,590 per year, or $126,360 for four years. The cost of tuition and fees at a four-year public non-profit college was $5,020 per year or $20,080 if the student finished in four years. These sums seemed astronomical then, as they still do now. We worried about how we’d be able to afford this on our modest Vermont incomes since our youngest was to begin the following year as well. Both girls wanted to go to school in Boston and had been accepted to the colleges of their choice. This was a new experience for us, sending our children away to college.
