Rep. Welch will hold a press conference to highlight the importance of the Medicare Dependent Hospital and Low Volume Hospital Designations programs for rural Vermont hospitals and make an announcement regarding the status of the program.
Brattleboro Senior Meals Celebrates March for Meals
Brattleboro Senior Meals joins with the Meals on Wheels Association of America to celebrate March for Meals. The month of March mobilizes hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs across the country to reach out to their communities and build support that will sustain them all year long.
This Sunday, we will close both the northbound and southbound Exit 3 on-ramps to reduce congestion on I-91 Southbound caused by merging traffic. Because of highway logistics, we need to close both northbound and southbound on-ramps. Local southbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 south to Exit 2 or 1, and local northbound traffic will be rerouted to Route 5 north to Exit 4. Sheriff officers will assist in directing traffic. The on-ramps at Exit 3 will be closed from noon to 7:00 pm.

The BAMS Committee will meet at 7:45 a.m. on Monday March 16 in the BAMS Conference Room.
The Planning and Policy Committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16 in the WRCC Cusick Conference Room.
The PCL+FIGG Team will conduct the next on-site “trail talk” for the Public on Saturday, March 14, 2015. There has been a lot of progress at the I-91 Brattleboro Bridge project site, which will be shared with attendees. The talks will originate at the West River Trail near the marina. The trail talk will be led by Caleb Linn, Project Manager for PCL (lead contractor) and William Johnson, Senior Quality Engineer for FIGG (bridge designer).
Interested participants should meet the PCL+FIGG Team at the West River Trail trailhead on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at 8 a.m. and the talk will begin at 8:15 a.m. Participants will walk the trail to the I-91 bridge site, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
The two scarcest commodities on this planet are money and time. We never seem to have enough of either one. But this isn’t true of everyone. Some people have lots of one, some of the other, and some lucky people have both. How can this be? I have a socioeconomic theory that the time/money ratio is in fact an indicator of economic class. Here’s how it works:
If you have both time and money, you’re probably affluent. You simply have the money and don’t need to work that hard for it, if at all. Consequently, you have lots of time too. The world is your oyster. You can have your cake and eat it too.
Many years ago I was employed by a prestigious institute, which partnered with an esteemed university, to visit elementary schools across Vermont (all names withheld) and closely observe classrooms in action. There was a scoring form used, the rubrics were primarily oriented towards engagement, involvement, inspiration, and critical thinking.
One classroom I visited was vaunted in advance as a high scoring classroom on standardized tests, the teacher a veteran known for their effectiveness. This was an early ed room, first or second grade. The teacher was brusque, professional, their M.O. seemed to be some kind of tough love. My work began as usual with the start of the day– sessions lasted a whole day– our role was akin to the Star Trek prime directive, observing only, being careful to not interfere.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Brattleboro AAUW presents: The Theatrical, Eccentric, Flamboyant Madame Sherri, a talk by Eric Stanway on Tues., March 17 at 7 p.m. at the Brattleboro Historical Society History Center at the Masonic Temple, 196 Main St., Brattleboro.
Stanway is author of “Madame Sherri: The Special Edition,” an expanded biography of the diva of the 20’s who scandalized the locals for years before succumbing to poverty and dying in a Brattleboro boarding house, leaving her castle in the woods of West Chesterfield, N.H., to crumble to ruins.
I just read that VPR’s southern Vermont correspondent, Susan Keese, passed away.
I’ve known Susan for many years, after first meeting her to talk about things going on at the Estey Organ Museum. Being a radio producer, her medium was sound, and stories that had interesting sounds or music being played were often of interest to her and her listeners.
She got very interested in the 2005 EsteyFest, a gathering of reed organ enthusiasts, many of whom brought instruments with them.
Over the years, whenever I had a potential story that included good sounds, I’d make sure she knew about it.

Even though I’m a writer, I imagine I’d have difficulty mastering source code. Code is written using text described as “human-readable computer language.” I’d like to think I write human-readable language, it’s the computer technical writing I fall down on.
Morse code, an electrical coding system, has been around for over 150 years. You might think of it in laymen’s terms as an early simplified form of source code.Then and now, coding is a way to convert plain language to communicate information or data through a medium using text and symbols and re-convert them (called encoding) back to a medium any recipient can understand.
