A Moral Mandate

The U.S. Department of Justice has an opportunity to show the world that this country has an understanding of how not to repeat the worst events in human history. Jack Smith has been appointed to oversee the case against the most evil President ever to sit in the oval office. I hope that he is a student of history and that he understands how it is possible for a tide of fascism and human cruelty to sweep through a society if unchecked in its early stages.

If Trump is not punished for his attempt to overthrow the government of the United States then the door will be left open for others, such as the far right wing of the Republican party, to build a movement to continue to subvert the rule of law and open the door to not only minority rule but a new brand of fascism.

Brattleboro Fire Department Warns Incoming Potential of Inclement Weather

The weather forecast for Thursday night into Saturday morning is for our area to potentially receive 2-3 inches of rain along with southwest winds from 20-30 miles per hour(mph) and gusts 60 to 70 mph. At the conclusion of this weather event, temperatures are expected to drop into the low teens.

The Brattleboro Fire Department and Department of Public Works are monitoring the weather closely and preparing for fallen trees, downed wires, extended power outages, streams to rise out of their banks, and icing on roadways.

Vermont Public Disconnect Is Quite Obvious

In case it is of interest, this is a letter to the editor (LTE) of mine submitted to vtdigger this morning in response to a recently published LTE regarding the name of “Vermont Public” written by Paul Stone (https://vtdigger.org/letters_to_editor/please-change-the-new-vermont-public-name/), fyi:

Vermont Public Disconnect Is Quite Obvious:

Since the merger between Vermont PBS and VPR and the subsequent name change, because it most definitely describes and means nothing whatsoever, I have been referring to the organization as “Vermont Public Whatever.”

Antje Duvekot and The Sea The Sea at Next Stage

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of contemporary folk music with Antje Duvekot and The Sea The Sea at Next Stage on Saturday, January 14 at 7:30 pm.

Antje Duvekot is a German-born, American-raised singer/songwriter whose songs have been critically praised for their hard-won wisdom, dark-eyed realism, and street-smart romanticism. Her bicultural upbringing and relative newness to English have helped shape her unique way with a song, giving her a startlingly original poetic palette. They are the keys to the powerful, even revolutionary, empathy that informs everything she writes. She has won some of the top songwriting awards including the Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, the Kerrville Folk Festival Best New Folk Award and the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Folk Act.

High Grove Parking Lot Lights and Meters Broken

Due to a vehicle crash in the High Grove Parking Lot the overhead lights are not currently working. Local electricians will be working to secure and install replacement parts. Expect the lights to be out and the lot to be unlit until further notice.

As a result of the incident the pay-and-display stations have also been affected. Those stations are powered by solar with an electrical backup. Use of the pay-and-display stations may be interrupted occasionally during this time.

False Hope and Empty Promises

This is the time of year when politicians at all levels make the rest of us realize that there are promises more unrealistic than New Year’s resolutions.

We hear statements about how they are going to work to close the gap between the left and the right. We hear about ambitious agendas to make life better for everyone.

Then reality sets in and those politicians pander to special interests and they make it clear that their highest priority is getting re-elected. The public statements rarely match the results of political wrangling.

There is one issue in particular that has been pushed to the back burner for a number of years. In the mid-nineties and into about 2010 there was a lot of talk about health care reform. States such as Vermont tried to make bold moves to set up model systems and it started to look like meaningful reform might happen.

Good Old Saint Nick

Saint Nicholas of Myra was a Christian bishop from Myra in Asia Minor (modern-day Demre, Turkey) around 300 AD.

Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is known as Nicholas the Wonderworker. His legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus (Sant Niklaas or Sinterklaas)

Film Screening and Concert Feature Reverend Vince Anderson & His Love Choir, at NextStage On 1/7

Next Stage Arts presents a screening of The Reverend, a documentary feature film, followed by a Q&A with director Nick Canfield on Saturday, January 7 at 2:00 pm at Next Stage. The subjects of the film, Reverend Vince Anderson & His Love Choir, perform at Next Stage at 7:30 pm.

Monday nights in Brooklyn are world-famous because of Reverend Vince and His Love Choir,” says Keith Marks, Executive Director of Next Stage Arts. “He’s the musician of the musicians of New York, attracting a packed house every Monday night with a who’s who list of attendees dancing. This has been a dream of ours to bring this documentary film of him, followed by Vince and the Love Choir.

THE REVEREND follows the spiritual and musical journey of Reverend Vince Anderson. After coming to New York in the 90’s to enter the seminary, Vince dropped out to follow his second calling – music. With his band The Love Choir, he has played a now-legendary weekly show for over twenty years. Reconnecting with his faith and using his intense soulful music, he began to preach a type of spirituality that meets people where they are, is open to all, and moves everyone that sees him play. Reverend Vince is also deeply involved in social activism, working with other progressive faith leaders at home and around the country to build inclusive communities. Filmed over several years and featuring Questlove and members of TV On The Radio, The Reverend is a rocking concert film as well as an intimate portrait of Reverend Vince’s inspiring personal and spiritual life. 86 minutes.

Walnut Street Water Shut-Off

Notice of Water Service Interruption

Crews have discovered a leak in the water main on Walnut Street near the intersection with Terrace Street.  Repairs will be made on Tuesday, December 13 beginning at 3:00pm and continuing through approximately, 7:00pm.  During this work water service will be shut off to all residents and businesses on Walnut Street.

Once the water is restored, you may experience a short period of discolored water or air in the water lines after the repair is complete.  Running the cold water for a few minutes should clear the lines if this happens.
