The PCL+FIGG Team will conduct the next on-site “trail talk” for the Public on Saturday, August 8, 2015. There has been a lot of exciting progress at the I-91 Brattleboro Bridge project site, which will be shared with attendees. The talks will originate at the West River Trail near the marina. The trail talk will be led by Caleb Linn, Project Manager for PCL (lead contractor) and Garrett Hoffman, Design Manager for FIGG (bridge designer).
Interested participants should meet the PCL+FIGG Team at the West River Trail trailhead on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at 8 a.m. and the talk will begin at 8:15 a.m. Participants will walk the trail to the I-91 bridge site, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 4 – In a Senate floor speech today, Sen. Bernie Sanders said he will introduce legislation to provide public funding of elections to replace a “corrupt” system of “legalized bribery’ with candidates “begging for contributions from the wealthy and the powerful.”
“We are talking about a rapid movement in this country toward oligarchy, toward a government owned and controlled by a handful of extremely wealthy families,” Sanders said.
To help reduce congestion on I-91 during high traffic periods, VTrans will close both the Exit 3 on-ramps on the next three Sundays:August 9, August 16, and August 23 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Southbound traffic will be routed to Exit 1, and northbound traffic attempting to use the Exit 3 on ramp will be routed north on Route 5 to Exit 4. Officers will be on hand to control traffic. I-91 will remain open.

Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project
It has been a while since I have read news of a circus tent being blown down.
Yesterday, as some rather violent thunderstorms passed north of us, hundreds of people were inside a circus tent in New Hampshire enjoying a performance by the Walker Bros. circus. According to one report I saw, the wind came up, poles began lifting up and everything came crashing down. There were two deaths and many injuries.

Twilight Music continues its 13th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, August 9 with funk and world beat band Simba. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 23.
As many people know, I like baking. The one aspect of it that makes me nervous, more than anything, is working with chocolate. It’s a finicky ingredient. It melts when you touch it, is very sensitive to temperature, and water will make it freeze up.
When I find easy ways of using chocolate to get great results, I’m thrilled. Just recently I took a break from summer pie-making to make a yellow cake with a chocolate frosting, and tried something new that I’d like to share.

On Thursday, August 20 from 5 – 7pm the public is invited to attend an opening reception for a new featured exhibit at Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts at 183 Main Street, Brattleboro. Father and Son, Malcolm and Shaun Wright (ceramic and bronze sculpture and photography respectively) are teaming up for an exhibit showcasing their work along with the oil canvases of Petria Mitchell.
The name Malcolm Wright will be familiar to many in Southern Vermont and beyond as a ceramic artist and sculptor. His work is widely collected privately and publicly. Collections include the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Denver Art Museum, The Currier Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and the Bennington Museum.

The NEA Our Town Grant Screening Committee has chosen finalists, and their list of screened proposals will be reviewed and approved by the by Brattleboro Selectboard at their next regular meeting, enabling the project to move to the next phase.
Brooks Memorial Library hours will be restored on Thursday mornings and Saturday afternoons, the board will accept a grant, and allow the Assessors to fine more local businesses. You can bring up other items that aren’t on the agenda during Public Participation.
