Brattleboro-Hinsdale Bridge Construction Update May 26, 2023

TRAFFIC IMPACT: The planned closure for Vermont Route 142 is scheduled to be implemented on Tuesday morning, May 30, 2023 at 7 a.m. Until then, intermittent flagging operations and single lane closures will be encountered during working hours from the intersection with Royal Road and north, allowing for the entering/exiting of construction equipment to the work zones.

VT 142 will be closed for 90 days beginning north of the access to Royal Road to just south of the access to 28 Vernon Street. Flaggers will be present at both ends of the closure to assist construction vehicles into the work zone and to facilitate local traffic access to 28 Vernon Street as needed.

BCTV, Town of Brattleboro Win National Video Awards

Brattleboro Community TV (BCTV) and the Town of Brattleboro each received a 2023 Hometown Media Award from the Alliance for Community Media. The awards program was established to honor and promote community media, community radio, and local cable programs that are distributed on Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) access cable television channels.

BCTV was recognized for “Overall Excellence in Public Education or Government (PEG) Access.” The award honors all of the programming of the station, not just one show. BCTV won the national award for coverage of community programming in 2022 in the budget category of $300,000 or less after submitting a 20-minute montage of videos produced by staff and volunteers. This is the fifth time BCTV has won the overall award. Staff will attend the awards ceremony on June 28, 2023 in Brooklyn, NYC.

Green Mountain Stories – Live at the Library

On May 30 at 7:00 pm, the Brattleboro Literary Festival, Brooks Memorial Library and the Words Trail will celebrate live the newly released collection of short stories by Brattleboro author Mary E. Wilkins Freeman with her initially intended title Green Mountain Stories.  

Published originally in 1887 as A Humble Romance and Other Stories, this new edition features an introduction and critical commentary by Freeman scholar Brent Kendrick, who will talk about Mary and the book. Mary was inspired to become a writer in high school…she would go to her father’s dry goods shop in downtown Brattleboro every day after school, which was fortuitously located next door to a bookstore. She graduated from high school in Brattleboro and later moved away after her father died, but she maintained her connection to Vermont.

International Musical Collective Sia Tolno & Afro Dead to Perform at Cooper Field as Part of the Next Stage Bandwagon Summer Series

The Next Stage Bandwagon Summer Series presents Guinean musical artist Sia Tolno and international musical collective Afro Dead, live at Cooper Field on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at 6:00pm. Sia Tolno will perform both solo and as the lead vocalist of Afro Dead, which reimagines the music of the Grateful Dead in an African style.

Sia Tolno is an award-winning global touring & recording artist, vocalist and songwriter, from Guinea/Sierra Leone, steeped in Afrobeat, Afro-blues, Mandinga and Soukous styles of African popular music. Her music is both personal and universal, singing about her unique past while making it relevant to the global masses. She has worked with Tony Allen (Musical director for Fela Kuti) and Lusafrica records, and her new album is being recorded in Barcelona produced by Aaron Feder in collaboration with Slow Walk Music.

Brattleboro Memorial Day Closings

In observance of Memorial Day, all Brattleboro Town offices will be closed on Monday, May 29, 2023, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday, May 28 and Monday, May 29, 2023. All other violations will be enforced.

Bearing Witness, a Retrospective by Artist Karen Becker

Bearing Witness, a retrospective exhibit of watercolors, pastels, and prints, by Brattleboro artist Karen Becker, is currently on view at the All Souls Church in the West Village Meeting House., through June 30. Becker’s artwork focuses on the beauty she finds in nature, and she represents the animals and trees that are all bearing witness to the devastation of climate change.

The public is invited to an artist’s reception on Saturday, June 10, from 3 – 5 pm. All Souls Church is located at 29 South St, West Brattleboro. The exhibit is open Sundays, 12 – 2 pm, or by appointment (802-257-4710).

Drug Shortages, Deadly Consequences

We live in a world that has become dependent on prescription medications. It has been that way for decades despite the fact that too many people cannot afford them. And although cost remains a major barrier, people now have to contend with worsening shortages in the supply of drugs.

There have been shortages of critical drugs in the past, but it seems as though the current shortage of life-saving drugs may be showing us how the pharmaceutical industry is driven by profit while the value of human life is marginalized. Nothing new. Not exactly a revelation.

Suggestion for Solution for Homeless Folks

Apparently, from what I am reading about Brattleboro and other areas https://www.mynbc5.com/article/brattleboro-homeless-vermont-hotel-motel-voucher/43934250 there are restrictions on land use and local zoning ordinances and state laws, etc., etc., but what about “unrestricted land” for sale in Vermont?

If a few non-profits got together, and did some of those online fundraisers, maybe you all together could come up with enough money to buy “unrestricted” land in Vermont and a bunch of tents from a big box store like Home Depot or Walmart.

If you can find a property with a stream on in, people can take a dip to get clean.

Brattleboro 2023 Abstract Grand List and Grievance Hearing Scheduling

Pursuant to title 32, Vermont Statutes Annotated, section 4111(g), “A person who feels aggrieved by the action of the Listers and desires to be heard by them, shall, on or before the day of the grievance meeting, file with them his or her objections in writing and may appear at such grievance meeting in person or by his or her agents or attorneys. Upon the hearing of such grievance the parties thereto may submit such documentary or sworn evidence as shall be pertinent thereto.”

The Town of Brattleboro Abstract Grand List will be lodged May 17, 2023. This same day, change of assessment notices will be mailed. The Brattleboro Listers will hold grievance hearings at the Municipal Building at 230 Main Street starting Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 9am. Applications for a hearing are available at the Assessor’s Office or online at www.Brattleboro.org on the Assessor’s page.

A combative public greeted the selectboard to kick off their Tuesday night meeting. The quick version: downtown is unsafe and your website sucks.

After that was out of the way, the board was treated to a discussion of I-91 exit 1 bridge repairs next spring and summer, emergency housing plans, and about EMS transition items such as potential municipal revenue, the RFI process, and a new project-related website.

Dosa Kitchen’s Ninth Season Starts

Dosa Kitchen food truck has started its ninth season! This year we are located on the beautiful Winston Prouty campus at 209 Austine Drive, Thomas Hall, in Brattleboro. Our hours are Friday, Saturday, Sunday (and holiday Mondays) 11:30-3:30. Our food truck is right outside our new dosa batter factory, with a small factory store to pick up dosa batter, other products, and dosa merch. The store has the same hours as the food truck. We hope to see you there!
