Brattleboro Vtrans Paving Project Construction Update 8/22/2025

In observance of the Labor Day Holiday, no work will be conducted on the project after 6:00 a.m. Friday, August 29th until Tuesday, September 2nd at 7:00 p.m.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Nighttime single-lane closures will be in place next week on Monday night through Friday morning from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Work will continue on Vermont Route 9 (Western Avenue and High Street), U.S. Route 5 (Canal Street and Main Street), and Vermont Route 30 (Linden Street). Flaggers will be present to direct one-way alternating traffic through multiple work zones. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces. All motorists should be aware of raised utility structures and wet paint.

Guilford Church Embraces ‘A Joyful Path’ Curriculum for Sunday School in September

The Sunday School at Guilford Community Church on September 7 will resume the curriculum of the ‘A Joyful Path” in which spiritual lessons for children kindergarten through 6th grade are both heart-centered and experiential, according to Sue Owings, chair of the church’s Christian Education committee.

Owings explained that this curriculum was chosen for many reasons, not the least of which was for its integrated approach to every lesson. “Children will listen to oral stories, reflect on their impressions as a group, and create projects that relate to the spiritual theme of the day,” Owings stated.

Responding to comments to my post about RTM on Sept 17th:

Since last read comments remain most in mind I shall respond first to the statement that you “could buy the argument that RTM members were more informed if about 140 attended Selectboard meetings.” First, it isn’t clear if you are saying that all 140 should attend all 25 or so meetings each year or some members attend some. The next obvious question is: how many SB meetings should be required of voters choosing to attend an Open mtg? How would we ascertain this in either case? But we should put this aside because it gets into enactment details before we have a goal to act upon. There is a deeper implied issue. Should there be any qualifications at all?

Patio Concert August 29

The Institute for Folding is a cardboard choreography of human knowledge, neglect, and wonder. Through movement, language, live sound, and 30 sheets of cardboard, the work explores our relationship to knowledge—our drive for scientific understanding, the ebb and flow of our ignorance, and our current disregard for what has been discovered. The piece speaks to this precarious moment when collective trust in knowledge has faltered and our sense of shared wonder has diminished. The performance runs about an hour.

Archaeological Findings at Kikitta Ahki to be Presented Online Aug. 28

Danielle Duguid, Hartgen Archaeological Associates’ principal investigator and project manager, will present on the findings that focus on the Leahy Home at the Holden & Martin Mills, which existed on the site.

Brattleboro Parking Zones To Be Updated Starting Sept. 3

The Town of Brattleboro will be modifying its parking zones on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025. To prepare for this transition, parking will be free on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Parking zones will be renamed using numbers only to streamline the payment process. Rather than typing the word “zone” followed by a number, users will simply enter a string of numbers when paying through the Park Smarter app or Text to Pay system. For example, rather than typing “Zone1,” users will enter “05301.” Signs throughout the downtown area will be relabeled and color-coded to match the new parking map, available at Brattleboro.gov/parking.

Retirement Retrospective

Retirement is a strange concept. For some people it is not something that is in their vocabulary and, for others, it is something that makes them count the days until the new phase of their life begins. If your life’s work and your passion for what you do blend perfectly then it seems likely that you don’t want the kind of life you lead to end. Working under other people’s rules tends to make many people long for a new kind of freedom.

It has been ten years since I mostly walked away from a 45 year nursing career. I enjoyed the ride and it turned out that the last job I had was the most satisfying in many ways. But working within the American health care system, no matter where, can wear you down and make you feel like you are not doing the best you can for your patients.
