Hello, my name is Jason Alden and I invite you to visit The Drawing Studio, a creative workspace for artists, students and families. As a life-long lover of drawing, I offer this space as an encouragement to individuals to explore their creative natures, independently or in community. All are welcome.
The Drawing Studio is fully equipped with drawing and water-based art materials, paper, easels, still life collections and a wonderful art library. We have a coffee and tea bar and windows overlooking the Whetstone Brook.
You may work independently or with instruction. I have many years experience with drawing, painting and color theory and am happy to help you as much as you need.
In Kabbalah, the central belief is God created the world with language, by combining the number with the letter with the word. This is expressed in the foundational text of Kabbalah, the Sepher Yetzirah, or in English, The Book of Formation. In its opening paragraph, it states, in reference to God creating the world, “He created His Universe by three forms of expression: Numbers, Letters and Words”. BRATTLEBORO—The Brattleboro Chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) announces the first in its Spring series of lectures, to be held on Monday, April 2. The lectures’ subject is “Reading the Qur’an with Rumi.”
Jalaluddin Rumi, the thirteenth-century Muslim contemplative who is today one of the best-selling poets in America, considers the Qur’an a map of the self and the Qur’anic stories to contain wisdom that can lead to a life of happiness and flourishing. In this Monday’s lecture, Amer Latif, a professor of religious studies at Marlboro College, will give an overview of the Qur’an, and of Rumi and his thought.
On Friday, April 6 at 7:30 pm in the Centre Congregational Church parlor, a benefit concert for the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus will be performed by two local-area vocal quartets, the Seymour Sisters and Singcrony.
The Seymour Sisters are Betsy Williams, Laura Williams, Beth Spicer, and Kate Wolff, who sing old-time, gospel, country and swing, as well as play a combination of banjo, mandolin, guitar, dobro and stand-up bass.

So begins the song, which begins the story, which begins the adventure: One day, something drives Isidor from out of his little grey existence. His cheek runs away, and Isidor must search around the world to find it again: a world of color and beauty, as well as loneliness and even danger.
Isidor’s Cheek is performed on a revolving table filled with all the details of Isidor’s miniature world: from his shabby grey house to a forest of apple trees, through an unfriendly city, across a sea of turtles and barracuda, into the smallest circus in the world. The table revolves to bring Isidor home again and to transform his house, his garden and indeed his whole outlook on life. Isidor himself is barely 5 and 1/2 inches high (14 cm), an appropriately little hero for a small story with a big heart.

I noticed the history note about John Birge’s woolen mill burning down. There is an old woolen mill still standing on Birge Street. It is now apartments. I wonder if this is on the site of the one that burned? I’ve read that they made blankets there for the Union Army and later for Jordan Marsh.

This morning’s article in the Reformer about Marlboro College was odd in a number of ways. First, they say they have a “structural deficit” of 3-4 million dollars a year. But they say that the endowment is sufficient to cover this loss. The endowment is only about $40 million. The 990 for 2015 showed a loss of $4,000,000 in total assets, indicating that this $4 million a year loss has been going on for awhile.
How can the items in our everyday life be used as a gateway to play and our inner child as we unzip our creativity?
Monday morning I woke up having just experienced a lucid dream.
I had just come out of a large building. It was in a city (I have been dreaming of being in big cities lately). I realized that I was dreaming.
I looked at my surroundings. Everything looked so real even though I knew it was a dream. I did not want to lose this dream, which can happen if you get too excited about knowing that you are in a lucid dream. So I started to look at the ground, thinking that by focusing on something mundane I can keep things on an even keel and the dream will continue.
Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present an evening of acoustic/electric Americana music from Sleepy Hollow, NY by The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (aka The Grand Slambovians) at Next Stage on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 pm.
The music of The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been described as “hillbilly-Floyd,” “folk-pop,” “alt-country, roots-rock” and “surreal Americana” – a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness. A rootsy psychedelica that Maverick Magazine calls “Mightily impressive and hugely original rock from the cool end of Americana,” the quartet’s melodic avant-folk conjures with an exotic instrumental arsenal (accordion, cello, mandolin, theremin) in addition to standard rock regalia, and a palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Dancing freely between all existing religious and philosophical mythologies, the music is uplifting, empowering and a lot of fun.
