Among the Wounded: A Civil War Talk by Dave Twombly

Please join fellow Civil War enthusiasts and others who treasure family heirlooms for a talk by local area resident Dave Twombly about the discovery of his great-great grandfather’s civil war diary that was written between May-June 1864 as a volunteer minister in the Union Army.

The diary came to light in 1995 when David’s daughter was in sixth grade and needed information for a report on the Civil War. Twombly’s father, Gilmer, found this Civil War-era memoir entitled “Among the Wounded in 1864,” written by his great-grandfather Alexander S. Twombly in an old steamer trunk some years ago, and then sent her several illustrations from the memoir.

Roughly two Millennia ago, settlers atop the high plateau of Masada, in the Judean Desert, saw the approach and intended siege by the Romans. The largest ramp in human history was erected before their eyes to breech the fortress.  Imagine the experience of watching one’s slow but inevitable overtaking by legions of warriors. Followed by the conqueror’s worldview being instilled unavoidably.

When the Romans finally succeeded and surmounted the peak, they found a surprise.

Riders and horse enthusiasts from all over New England converged at Kurn Hattin Homes’ Westminster campus last weekend for the Two-As-One-Horsemanship® Clinic, presented by renowned horse trainers
and riding clinicians Bob Jeffreys and Suzanne Sheppard of Middletown, NY. The Two-As-One philosophy, developed by Jeffreys and Sheppard, focuses on teaching riders steps toward better communication with their
horse, improved connection and partnership, and a higher degree of harmony between horse and rider, resulting in enhanced riding performance.

This Saturday, May 25, the East Putney Contra Dance at Pierce’s Hall is bridging the generations, pairing one of the region’s most celebrated and accomplished callers with the youth band that grownups are raving about.

Our caller will be Peter Amidon, who for the past twenty years has dedicated himself to traditional song, dance and storytelling. Renowned for his teaching, Peter is a familiar face at the major northeast U.S. music and dance festivals, at teacher conferences, and at summer folk camps of traditional dance and song. He last appeared at Pierce’s Hall anchoring the packed fundraising dance that helped make the hall’s new roof possible.

Weekend Concert Series – Kid Creole and the Coconuts 1985 Paris

This weekend we head to Paris in 1985 for the latin, big band funk of Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

The Kid is August Darnell, leader of this rogue group of musical pirates. With Cab Calloway styling, he leads the castaways through the evening’s performance, frequently resulting in interplay with the Coconuts.

The Coconuts are his background singers and dancers. They tease him and mock him because they know him. They know he’s broke, a scammer, and has a women in every port.

Twilight Music presents California-based, world music quartet Fishtank Ensemble at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery on Saturday, May 18 at 7:30 pm. The dynamic, virtuosic and fiery band plays a high-energy mix of Romanian, Gypsy jazz, flamenco, Balkan, Turkish, Greek and tango influenced music.

Fishtank Ensemble includes two explosive violins, the world’s best slap bass player, musical saw, flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar, trombone, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals, accordion and one little banjolele. Formed in 2005 and playing everywhere from the hippest LA clubs to festivals, cultural centers, museums, parades and even on the street, the band tackles everything from French hot jazz to wild Serbian and Transylvanian gypsy anthems, flamenco and oddball originals.

Swenson Humanities Educator Award, which recognizes a Vermont educator in grades 6 through 12 who exemplifies excellence in the teaching of the humanities. VHC seeks nominations for the 2013 award. Kennedy in 1963 as Senior Citizens’ Month, and now known as Older Americans’ Month, May is a good time to think about services offered in New England by A Tempo Senior Move. Offering advice and services related to the changes often experienced by retirees and seniors as they get older, A Tempo Senior Move is participating in a number of events scheduled for the month throughout the region, including a recent clinical workshop at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis presented by Christina Healy, RN, MA, and Dr. Marjorie Kettell. Healy is a geri-psych clinician and psychoanalyst on staff of A Tempo Senior Move.

Christina Gibbons, PhD, of Brattleboro, an independent scholar interested in the history of literacy, fills the glass display cases with her images of reading in postcards collection in the second-floor entryway during May. 

“I started collecting images of women reading twenty five years ago and now have several hundred. The original post cards were first exhibited in the library at UMass Amherst in 2001. After that I began lecturing and quickly realized my collection was not about painting but about the history of literacy, so I added men reading and writing as well.”

Ready for your weekend concert? Here’s one you are either going to love or hate.

There isn’t much middle ground with Dread Zeppelin. You either enjoy an Elvis impersonator singing Zeppelin songs with a reggae twist, or you do not.

I do. This band cracks me up. To my ear they do excellent, inventive cover songs with the right mix of love and parody. Mixing Heartbreaker with Heartbreak Hotel is genius.

Vermont’s constitution, drafted in 1777, was one of the most enlightened documents of its time, but in contrast, the history of Vermont has largely been told through the stories of influential white men. Join local scholar Cyndy Bittinger at the Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, May 8, at 7 PM on a journey through the forgotten tales of the often overlooked roles that women, Native Americans, and African Americans played in Vermont’s history.

Her book, Vermont Women, Native Americans, and African Americans, takes a fresh look at our state’s history, uncovering hidden stories from the earliest inhabitants to present-day citizens. Ms. Bittinger explores where these marginalized groups are missing from historical narratives and explains their unique experiences and the ways that they contributed.
