WRC Seeks Public Comment on Renewable Energy Grant Program

The Vermont Clean Energy Development Fund has awarded $400,000 to the Windham Regional Commission (WRC) to develop a grant program to support renewable energy projects in Windham County. The program will focus on small-scale projects. Award amounts are proposed to begin in the $10,000 range and go up to $320,000. The WRC will host a public meeting in the Townshend Town Hall, 2006 Route 30 Townshend, Vermont Thursday, September 29th at 6 pm to solicit public feedback on the program proposal. Brattleboro Area Hospice To Offer Seven Week Grief Support Group

A new Seven Week Bereavement Support Group for adults begins on September 29th and will meet each Thursday from 6:00-7:30 pm, ending November 10th. This group is sponsored by Brattleboro Area Hospice and will meet at the hospice office at 191 Canal St. in Brattleboro. On September 17th at 8:00 PM, the Vermont Jazz Center will kick off its 2016-17 season with a guitar enthusiast’s dream: Kurt Rosenwinkel and his “post-jazz sonic trio of breathtaking virtuosity.” His new group, Bandit 65, is fresh off of two European tours and performances in Los Angeles, Montreal, Philly and Boston. Bandit 65 explores the potential of combining drums with two guitarists replete with looping pedals and electronic enhancement to create a brand-new sonic landscape. Guitarist Pat Metheny has stated “I admire the musician who makes the commitment to ask the harder musical questions that transcend the everyday issues of style and idiom, such is Kurt Rosenwinkel – a thinking guitarist who is working hard to come up with answers that meet his own personal criteria of what music is and what music can be.” Never one to sit on his laurels, Bandit 65 represents Rosenwinkel’s next phase of development, a distinct move from the Standards Trio he has been touring with the past few years.

Bandit 65 is Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar and electronics, Tim Motzer on guitar, prepared guitar, loops and electronics and Gintas Janusonis on drums, percussion and “circuit bent toys.” The music they play is outer-worldly, filled with varied sounds, textures and grooves; it is exceptionally dynamic, exploring the range that exists from the “spaces in between the notes” to “sheets of sound.” The music we will be hearing on September 17th is not bebop, swing or the sophisticated, composed melodies that many of us are accustomed to hearing from Rosenwinkel. It is a new, progressive exploration of the counterpoint of never before heard sounds. Like Miles Davis, Rosenwinkel is too impatient to stand in one place for too long – his brilliant, curious mind will not be constrained to recreating his past successes. Like Metheny states, this new group is Rosenwinkel’s response to “transcending the everyday issues of style and idiom.”

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of September 12th

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

As many folks may know, or not know due to the ridiculous media blackout, there are hundreds of Indigenous tribes gathering in North Dakota to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline.

We have partnership with the Oectc Sakowin- Seven Council Fires, Indians and Cowboys and anyone who is willing to stand with us against the Dakota Access Pipeline. This pipeline will cross the Missouri River and Cannon Ball River which is the life line to many tribes and non native, when this pipeline leaks it will destroy the water and land. Water is life ! So this pipeline is along the Missouri River and the KL pipeline was along the Ogall aquifer; both are important to save.

Noise In the Library?!?! Brooks Memorial Library Renovations

The Brooks Memorial Library is beginning renovations made possible by the recent bequest of Ronald Read. Mr. Read left BML over 1.2 million dollars in 2015. The Board of Trustees has invested the bulk of the funds in an endowment to provide support for the library for generations to come. The balance is being used to offset the staffing costs of restored hours and to make improvements to the building which will be 50 years old next year. The BML Buildings and Grounds Committee sought extensive input from the public and staff during the planning process. Among the improvements will be added spaces for meetings and quiet study a room for teens and a restroom on the ground floor.

We Vermonters know him as an adoptive (and eccentric) favorite son, involving himself politically in support of single payer healthcare and endorsing Anthony Pollina’s own 2008 run for governor. Now the Spaceman is running for Governor in his own right; as the candidate of the Vermont Liberty Union Party.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Monday, September 5th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (I-91 will remain open). Traffic conditions on both I-91 and through the town will be monitored closely throughout the day. Should traffic congestion become an issue, the ramps may be re-opened until traffic conditions improve. This will be managed actively throughout the day until peak traffic volumes have passed.

Route 30

Brattleboro Elliot Street Bridge Construction Project Completed

The Town of Brattleboro is pleased to announce that construction work on the Elliot Street bridge crossing the Whetstone Brook was completed on schedule on Friday, August 26, 2016, and that this bridge has fully reopened for motor vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.

A range of State of Vermont, Town of Brattleboro, and private personnel were vital to the successful and timely completion of this project. The leadership of Vermont Secretary of Transportation Chris Cole is particularly noteworthy, as is his Agency’s innovative program that gives priority to expedited bridge deck replacements projects. Also instrumental were the efforts of Vermont Agency of Transportation Project Manager Jennifer Fitch, who spent significant time and effort managing and overseeing the planning and implementation of this project from her home office in Montpelier, VTrans resident engineer Chad Greenwood, and local VTrans District 2 staff.
