Spanish for Travelers Class and Free Spanish Classes

Brattleboro Veterans’ Day Closings

In observance of Veterans’ Day, all Brattleboro town offices will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Wednesday, November 11. All other violations will be enforced.

Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Wednesday, November 11, 2015.

Secretary of State Jim Condos Brings Transparency Tour to Brattleboro

Monday, November 9th at 6pm

Montpelier, VT—Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos is continuing his third biennial Transparency Tour with a stop in Brattleboro on Monday, November 9, 2015. The presentation, focusing on laws about open and transparent government, will be held at Brattleboro Town Hall at 6pm.

“Since taking office, one of my main priorities has been transparency in government. I am pleased to have the opportunity to visit communities all over the state and discuss open meeting and public records laws with municipal and state officials, local government boards, and the public,” stated Condos.

The Compassionate Friends – New Bereavement Group Remembers Children Who Died

Brattleboro, VT—Bereaved families that have experienced the death of a child now have an opportunity to meet with others on a regular basis who have endured similar tragedies.

The Compassionate Friends (TCF) of Brattleboro, a national self-help organization for families that have had a child die, will hold its next monthly meeting Sunday, November 15th, at 2:00 PM at 541 Black Mountain Road, Brattleboro, VT. Meetings will be held each month the third Sunday of the week at the same time and location.

“A bereavement organization like TCF where families could talk about their loss publicly without feeling out-of-place is invaluable to those of us whose children have died,” said new chapter leader Beverly Miller. “After your child dies, most people do not want to talk with you about your child probably because they are afraid of making you feel bad. The irony is that talking about your child helps you–no one wants their child forgotten. And studies have proven that sharing our stories and tears is an emotional release that helps us.”

Doug The Mailman Retires?

Say it isn’t so!

Heard from a neighbor a rumor that Doug the Mailman has retired. This will be big news to a significant portion of town if true. It seems to be true. He hasn’t been delivering mail for the last week or two.

Doug was the type of postman you thought of if you were casting someone in the role for a movie or TV.  Friendly, fast, up for short conversations and new tips, he handled the delivery of all those wonderful bills (and a few other things) since we moved to town.

He was reliable. One could almost set a watch by his delivery times. And the routine was well known. You’d see Doug and his truck on one street and know your mail would be there shortly.

Mark Kistler had a few TV shows and books aiming to teach anyone to draw in three dimensions. He’s fun, funny, and a good teacher, plus he has his nifty space suit fully-outfitted with pens, pencils, and markers.

This is an early show, The Secret City, from Maryland Public television. Grab some paper and pencils and follow along. You’ll learn something by the end of the hour.

Informational Meeting for River Gallery School Trip to Spain

Brattleboro — The River Gallery School in Brattleboro will hold an informational meeting on Thursday, November 12, for those interested in participating in its April art trip to Andalucia, Spain. The meeting will take place from 6:00-7:30 pm the art school at 32 Main Street in Brattleboro.

The River Gallery School tour will includes a week of making art and exploration of the Spanish countryside. Pleine air painting sessions will be led by Mary Giammarino, a frequent instructor at River Gallery School workshops and a well known local artist.

The trip will be held from April 2 to 9, 2016 and led by Cicely Carroll of Travel Fever Tours in Putney.

Next West Brattleboro Association Meeting Scheduled for Thursday, November 12th

The next monthly meeting of the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) will be preceded by a potluck supper held at the home of Tom and Cecile French, 123 Juniper Ridge Road, on Thursday, November 12, at 5:30 PM. Members of the WBA and guests including West B residents and business owners are invited to bring something to share with their neighbors and join in the meeting afterward.

After a review of the treasury report and updates on the status of welcome signs and the outdoor cinema initiative, the WBA will talk about having their annual Holiday Party in December.

Initiating a West B Welcoming Letter will also be on the agenda in addition to discussion about whether to and, if so, how to seek new money to support the Neighborhoods Fund.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting Notes and Agenda for November 10, 2015

The Brattleboro Selectboard will be holding a big party Tuesday night. Just kidding. They will be holding a special meeting to begin discussion of the FY17 Budget, and to quite possibly adopt new Land Use Regulations for the Town of Brattleboro, an event that last occured in the 1980s. So perhaps there will be a party of some sort.

You are encouraged, invited, summoned, requested, asked, appealled for, solicited, incited, provoked and generally called forth into attending this meeting and expressing your views on these and other matters.

Retreat Woods Showing Signs Of Wear

We took a walk in the Retreat Woods recently as a way to get back into nature without having to go too far.  It had been a while since we last went — probably in the early summer sometime.  The trails were already too wide then, but this last time, it was obvious they had seen some hard wear.

In most places, the main paths were down to hard-packed bare earth, with lots of trippy rocks and tree roots pushing up that I don’t remember being quite so much in evidence before.  The softer, smoother top layer of earth seems to have been worn away.

Tony Barrand and Keith Murphy will sing dramatic ballads, romantic and funny songs about domestic life and marriage and “Jubilee Jim Fisk,” a song about Brattleboro’s own Jim Fisk, notorious Robber Baron of the Gilded Age. .

Brattleboro Museum & Art Center Seeks Original Artwork and Writing from Vermont Teens – Submissions Now Being Accepted

BRATTLEBORO, VT — The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) is now accepting submissions for the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a prestigious national recognition initiative for teenagers with exceptional artistic and literary talent. Vermont students in grades 7-12 are invited to submit art and writing entries in dozens of categories, including ceramics, digital art, painting, photography, poetry, humor, science fiction, personal essay/memoir, and more. The submission deadline is December 16, 2015.
