Sanders Announces Annual State of the Union Essay Contest

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has launched his sixth annual State of the Union essay contest, calling upon Vermont’s high school students to address what they view as the major issues facing the United States.

The U.S. Constitution calls for the president to “give to the Congress information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.” As President Barack Obama prepares to deliver his State of the Union speech to a joint session of Congress in January, Sanders is again asking Vermont’s high school students to consider writing an essay of 250 to 500 words detailing their own view of the state of the union.

Brattleboro Kiln Dried Noise Increase

I’ve been living on Elliot Street, south side, above the BKD complex for about 5 years. There has always been factory fan noise, but up until now, the decibel level has been not too bad.

Recently, however, I noticed a marked increase in the fan noise-say in the last month or so. The level is difficult to tolerate-I run a white noise generator whenever I’m home. And it barely contains the hum. If there are others who have noticed this intrusion, I’d like to hear from you. BKD ought not to be allowed to just turn up the fans and wreck the neigborhood, just to generate a bit more $$.

American Legion Post 5 Honors Soldiers Killed in Action in Vietnam: PO3 John Charles Blake

On Saturday, November 21, Brattleboro’s American Legion Post 5 will honor local soldiers killed in action during the Vietnam War.

A ceremony, at the post home on Linden Street, will include students from Brattleboro Union High School reading the names and a brief biography of each of the 11 men, followed by a brief address by Dr. Robert Tortolani, a combat battalion surgeon during the Vietnam War.

The soldier biographies, along with family photos, will be posted on the Brattleboro Historical Society website, in succession, in the days leading up to the November 21 event.

Today we remember PO3 John Charles Blake.

New England Re-Arranged, Vermont Now On Atlantic

Presidential Candidate Ben Carson sent out a graphic to supporters yesterday that included a map of the United States. Sort of. It’s not THE United States so much as a slightly re-imagined United States.

Look at this detail from the map and you will see a new layout for New England. Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts have been moved north, Connecticut and Rhode Island have been relocated to our east, and Vermont remains where it has stood for at least the last decade.

Local Businesses Step Up To Support the BMH Comprehensive Breast Care Program

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, two local businesses organized fundraising activities for the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and .

Robin White and her staff at held a Zumba dance party on October 30th, with the help of local Zumba instructors, Maribeth Fonda and Rachel Shaw. More than 30 women danced for over 2 hours to raise awareness and support for women battling breast disease. Three of the participating women, who raised over $500 each, received a free one-year membership to Curves. The event raised $3,719 and will be used to support BMH breast cancer patients by providing wigs, bras, breast prostheses, books and materials, groceries and gas cards to help women through treatment and recovery. “I wanted all the money to go to local women facing this disease head on,” said White.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: New Era Of Land Use Begins, Option Agreement Signed For Reformer Property

The Brattleboro Selectboard approved new land use and zoning regulations for the town after making some minor amendments to the much-discussed document. Not much has changed from last week, unless you had plans for an easy kennel empire in a rural district.

Brattleboro is entering into an option agreement to have a chance to purchase the property on Black Mountain Road currently in use by the Reformer. The agreement buys some time to fully consider a proposal to move the police to the north end of town.

Farms, finances, and energy consumption rounded out the evening. Read on for details.

Holiday Book Sale at Brooks

The Friends of Brooks Memorial Library will host their annual Holiday Book Sale in the Library on Friday, Dec. 4 from 10AM to 6PM and Sat., Dec. 5 from 10AM to 5PM. 

 Gift quality books and gently used fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and CDs will be on sale.  There is a selection of holiday theme books and like-new children’s books.  Non-fiction titles include art, cooking and gardening, history, music, sports and many more subjects.  On Saturday, between 11AM and 1PM, the Friends will provide free gift-wrapping for books purchased at the sale and intended as gifts.

Standard Time

The adoption of the new standard time on Sunday and Monday next will be universal in Brattleboro. The employees of the railroad companies are under orders to take the new time at the telegraph office at noon on Sunday. Estey & Co., Smith & Hunt, Crosby & Co., and the Asylum will all set their clocks and blow their whistles by the new standard on Monday.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of November 15

Route 30 under I-91 will be closed on Friday, November 20th from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM to ensure public safety as we conduct work on the new bridge above Route 30. This work is weather dependent and may need to be rescheduled.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, November 29 (Thanksgiving weekend) from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I-91 will remain open.

Poetry Reading Thursday in Guilford

I am pleased to invite you to my second collaborative reading with Tom Ragle, of Our Favorite Poems, this Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 pm at Guilford Community Church.  Admission is free, with donations covering the modest cost of our use of the church for this event.

Last May, we read a program of sonnets, and decided this time that we’d each read some of our favorite poems, and see what correlations emerge.  

Tom is reading a number of English poems, from the Elizabethan era to the early 20th century, including an interesting grouping of three different treatments of “Come live with me and be my love,” by Marlowe, Raleigh and Donne.  The Romantics are also represented, as well as poems of Americans Walt Whitman and Robert Frost.
