Drastic Cuts in NEH Funding Will Impact Vermont Humanities Council

If you have ever attended a “First Wednesdays” program at the Library, please read the following appeal:

“Dear Friends,

We need your help — today — to protect funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Vermont Humanities Council. This week, the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee sent a budget bill for FY 2014 to the full Appropriations Committee that includes only $75 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a drastic 49% cut, which would come on top of a 19% cut over the past three years.

This concert is from the tour that nearly bankrupted the band and all but ended ELP.

In 1975, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer were starting to get itchy. Their 4 previous albums had made the musical statements they’d wanted to make and each member wanted to do something new. They each had also been working on their own music apart from the band. Eventually, rather than make solo albums, they made the “Works” albums. In Volume I each member took one side of the 2- record album and they all collaborated on the 4th side. “Works Volume I” wasn’t received well by the fan base from its release date of St. Patrick’s Day,1977. Unlike anything they’d done before, it was the beginning of the end. I like to think it was just the band growing up, as they were all about 30 years old at this point. But my love of the album wasn’t the opinion of the majority of fans.

No Daily Newspapers Printed in Brattleboro

Brattleboro no longer prints newspapers.

Neither the Commons nor the Reformer prints their papers in Brattleboro. I found this out after a reader asked if any papers were printed in town and I asked a few questions.

For over a century The Reformer and many other papers were printed in Brattleboro. With active news and book presses running around the clock, Brattleboro was a printing town.

Free Time and Less Supervision During the Summer Can Be Exciting and Dangerous for Youth

Prescription drugs are so commonly used that some mistakenly believe they are harmless. These medications in your home may be easily accessible to youth, who often have a misperception that misusing medications is a safe way to get high. Many prescription medications, especially pain relievers and stimulants, can be extremely dangerous when used improperly, such as in combination with other drugs and/or alcohol. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations (SAMHSA), more free time and less adult supervision can make the summertime an exciting time for many young people, but it can also increase the likelihood of exposure to dangers and substance use.

Downtown Disruptions in Brattleboro

A section of the Whetstone Pathway near the Co-op is closed today for pavement repair. This is work left from the Co-op project. The Pathway will reopen tonight and close again tomorrow to finish the repair. We apologize for the lack of notice.

The work disrupting traffic in the downtown area is the phone company (Fairpoint) lowering a few of their manholes so our snowplows do not hit them in winter.

Move to State Office Building Postponed

The state offices currently located on Linden Street in the former Linden Lodge will remain in that location until a later date.

The move back to 232 Main Street that was scheduled to begin July 26 has been postponed. A date for the move has not yet been determined. Offices at the Linden Street location include:

Veterans’ Committee Advances Health Care, Benefits Bills

WASHINGTON, July 24 – The Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs today approved a package of bills to improve benefits and health care services for veterans and their families.

Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the package includes a measure to bring the Department of Veterans Affairs in line with a Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. Other legislation approved by the Committee would improve the delivery of care and benefits for veterans who experienced sexual assault in the military. Another bill would make the VA provide detailed reports to Congress on its effort to eliminate a staggering claims backlog.

With the Connecticut River Valley Baseball League playoffs less than three weeks away, the Putney Fossils, the Claremont Cardinals and the Walpole Wild Blue all scored important regular season victories
in recent action.

At Dummerston Field, Putney benefitted from eight strong innings by starting pitcher Dave Guadalupe, as the Fossils beat the Sunapee Old Lakers, 8 to 4. Guadalupe gave up just one earned run on five hits before giving way to Richard Bissell who earned the save. Offensively, catcher Steve Stanley knocked in four runs on three hits, Brandon Reilly tripled, scored three runs and stole two bases while shortstop Nick Garcia went two for four, stole two bases and drove in a run.

Sanders Challenges White House Report on Student Loans

WASHINGTON, July 23 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said a White House report today masks a big boost in college loan interest rates that would be in store for students and parents under a White House-backed bill now before the Senate.

“The White House is being disingenuous and is trying to sweep under the rug big increases in interest rates for students and parents in the near future,” Sanders said. “Because college costs are out of control and interest rates are rising, students are leaving college deep in debt or in some cases choosing not to continue their education because they cannot afford it,” Sanders added.

West River Trail To Close Temporarily Under I-91

Trail closure under I-91 bridge, July 29-Aug. 2 and August 5-6

Attention West River Trail users: The area under the I-91 bridge will be temporarily closed from Monday, July 29 to Friday, August 2 due to utility conduit work. From immediately north of the bridge, the trail will be open. To access the trail north of the bridge, use the access from Rice Farm Road (go up Route 30, cross the Iron Bridge, take a right, past the Nature Conservancy trailhead, and look for the chain across the northern end of the West River Trail, on the right.)

Growing out of her experience with the Chamber of Commerce and after Wilmington was decimated by Tropical Storm Irene flooding, Laura Sibilia of BDCC helped create what she terms “two separate mechanisms” to address collaboration in the areas of tourism and employee recruitment.

When Atlas Advertising of Denver, CO representatives visit this area July 23-25, they will meet with focus groups comprised of the top five to ten employers in each area within the region. These are the “major stakeholders” identified by the Chambers of Commerce. The visit will begin with a focus on recruitment, meeting in Bellows Falls with major emloyers, in Brattleboro with workforce development, followed by tours of Bennington and Bellows Falls and meeting with the Human Resources group in Manchester.

Brattleboro Downtown Sidewalk Project Meeting

Residents and Business Owners:

The Town is planning to install new sidewalks on the east side of Main Street, starting at the Gilbert Memorial Bridge and continuing north to Walnut Street. Some sections of this sidewalk were recently replaced as part of a VTrans project. The Downtown Sidewalk Project will replace the sections that have not yet been upgraded. The project is intended to improve safety for pedestrians and create a more attractive Main Street. Two FHWA Enhancement grants and a local match in the form of a bond fund this project.
