Selectboard Meeting Notes: Solar Farming, Quick Fix for Brattleboro Rink

At Tuesday’s long meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard the new solar farm was explained in detail and public support for the project appears to be substantial. The board also approved a “quick fix” approach to ice rink repairs in order to be able to open the season on schedule. It also gives them more time to consider long-term options for the facility. 

The Fire Department presented an overview of their operations, a store on Guilford Road was again denied a liquor permit, tax rates were set, Patrick Moreland was named the interim Town Manager when Barb Sondag officially resigns, and much more was packed into the over three hour meeting.

BRATTLEBORO PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF YEAR OVER NEWPORT

The Brattleboro River Rats moved into the win column for the first time this season with a 7-2 victory over the Newport Polar Bears in recent Connecticut River Valley Baseball League action.

River Rats pitcher Todd Bell threw a complete game for the win, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out eight. At the plate, Bell drove in two runs. Other stars on offense included shortstop Michael Chevalier and third baseman Brian Benjamin, who each had three hits. Left fielder Caleb Record went two for four with an RBI, first baseman John Waitekus and right fielder Thomas Mauger each drove in a run while catcher Sunny Lucas scored two runs and second baseman Abe Klein scored twice and stole a base.

Spanish Camp for Children Ages 4-6 in Putney

There are a couple of spots open in Escuelita Spanish School’s Spanish camp this summer.

July 29th-August 2nd

At Spanish Camp, children acquire Spanish through songs, movement, games, and stories. Part of the day is structured Spanish time where children are able to hear 100% comprehensible Spanish in a way that maximizes acquisition. At other times, we play games, make art, cook, and explore the stream, forest, and gardens around us incorporating Spanish into all activities.

Looking for Magic the Gathering Players in Brattleboro

I’m posting on behalf of James, a 13-year-old I tutor part time.  He really loves playing Magic the Gathering and is really good at it.  He’s looking for more kids to play Magic with, roughly ages 11 to 15, and/or a local Magic group to join.  (That is, in Brattleboro – we know about the Greenfield one).

Please message me, or tell me how to get in touch with you, if you know of any Magic groups or 11-15 year old Magic enthuiasts who would be interesting in meeting me and James downtown somewhere (gazebo on the common?  Tea Lounge?) to play Magic.  (I don’t play, btw. :))

TRANSITION PUTNEY – Tick Talk – Take 2: Lyme Disease and the Resilience of a Species, Dan Foster, Wednesday, July 3, 7 – 8:30 p.m, Putney Library

Dan Foster first tested positive for Lyme disease 22 years ago. This talk (a repeat of his June 18th talk, due to popular demand!) is about Dan’s odyssey with a super bacteria that he believes he will soon be rid of.

Though he was treated promptly after his tick bite bull’s eye rash, he has had a variety of symptoms over the last 20+ years, but was able to manage them all pretty well until last year.

The Entergy Corporation continues to pollute the Connecticut River by dumping hundreds of millions of gallons of heated water every day from the Vermont Yankee nuclear facility. This “thermal pollution” destroys aquatic life. Because of high water temperature and low river volume, Entergy was forced to use its cooling towers to cool its reactor last summer. In fact, Entergy has the ability to use those towers continually. Instead, Entergy chooses to pollute our river. This is not acceptable.

Auggghhh.  I may have to get a new computer.  Mine is 6 years old, I think.  A very lovable iMac that I do not want to replace.  I have had macs my entire computer life.  Alas, I am at a point where I cannot afford, nor does it make sense for me to have a laptop and a desktop — seems way too outdated, besides.  I am really wanting a new laptopish/ipad/iphone/ipod single product to be created so I don’t have to buy 4 devices.

Brattleboro Independence Day Schedules and Closings

In observance of the July 4th holiday, all Town offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2013, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on July 4. All other violations, including extended parking will be enforced.

Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on July 4, 2013.

Stroll’s Plein Air Farm Art Show Sets Closing Reception

A closing reception celebrating the Strolling of the Heifers Plein Air Farm Art show will take place during Gallery Walk, Friday evening July 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vermont Artisans, downtown Brattleboro.

The gallery will also be introducing new exhibits of folk art by Warren Kimble and graffiti art by Scott Borofsky.

“Plein air” painting means painting out in the open — in this case, on the farm. The juried exhibit organized by local artist Deborah Lazar assembled works painted at Brattleboro-area farms during the months of April and May.

Sick Rose Bush

I have been growing Knockout roses with good success. The are hybrids, developed for hardiness so that even a bumbling gardener like me can’t harm them.

Last year someone gave me a fancy rose bush — I think it is called a Tiffany. It produced beautiful roses, but only about 2 of them. This year, the leaves are turning yellow, and the plant looks sick.
