Selectboard Meeting Notes – Put $7.8 Million On The Card, Please

At their regular meeting on Tuesday, the Brattleboro Selectboard approved of new plans for the West Brattleboro fire station as well as $7.8 million in financing from a bond bank for completing all three facility projects.

Enterprise budgets and selectboard goals were approved, the board held a discussion of public and private roads, the contract with Rescue Inc. has been renewed, new liquor fees were adopted, and Whetstone Brook is getting a close look to inspire discussions of redevelopment and flood protection.

Advance Tickets Now Available for Guilford Plays

General Admission tickets are now available for the Guilford Center Stage premiere of two one-act plays by Guilford author Michael Nethercott.  Nocturne Titanica is a unique take on the sinking of the Titanic. The Lace Jury is based on the first American all-women jury of the 20th century.  Interestingly, the historic events on which the plays are based happened within 6 months of each other in 1911 and 1912.

There will be three performances: Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4 at 7:30 pm, and a matinee on Sunday, June 5 at 2 pm.  

Strolling of the Heifers Seeks Participants in Farm-to-Table Culinary Apprenticeship Program

Strolling of the Heifers will offer up to 16 people a chance to enroll in a paid apprenticeship program designed to help them start culinary industry careers.

The Stroll’s Farm-to-Table Culinary Apprenticeship program is a 12-week program offering training that can lead to permanent food-preparation positions at restaurant and institutional kitchens.

The program is free to participants who meet income employment status qualifications, including veterans. It includes classroom time, as well as on-the-job experience at restaurant and institutional kitchens, for which participants will be paid. 

The aim of the program, says Orly Munzing, founder and executive director of Strolling of the Heifers, is to place all participants into permanent culinary employment at the conclusion of the program. “If the participant is successful at completing the course work, we’re pretty sure we can successfully place that person,” she said.

Vernon Street Fire Cleanup Tuesday

On Tuesday, May 17 there will be work on the site at 231 Vernon St, the scene of Saturday morning’s building fire from approximately 7:30am – 9:00am. A loader from the Department of Public Works will be in the area pushing back debris.

There will be alternating traffic around the area and Brattleboro Police will be on scene to help with traffic flow. Please expect minor delays during this time.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of May 16th

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Brattleboro Area Jewish Community will hold its second annual mini-version of “The Antiques Roadshow” on Sunday afternoon, May 22nd from 1:00 to 5:00 at 151 Greenleaf Street in West Brattleboro. Five experienced appraisers will be present to evaluate and assess antiques and collectibles such as books, sterling silver, art glass, china and pottery, fine art and signed prints, musical instruments, records and entertainment memorabilia, jewelry, paper, ephemera including postcards & documents, furniture, toys & dolls, Asian items, metalware, clocks, barometers, watches, rugs, coins, tchotchkes, much more.  Firearms, knives, ammunition, or other weaponry, and large rugs or bulky furniture cannot be accepted.  The appraisers are Richard Michelman, Kit Barry, Sharon Bocelli, Stephan Brandstatter, and Charles Suss.

West Brattleboro Association Chicken BBQ Is Saturday, May 28, 11 AM Till Gone

A Chicken BBQ will be sponsored by the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) on Saturday, May 28th, starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until it’s all gone. So plan to get to the event in front of the First
Congregational Church on Western Avenue in West Brattleboro in plenty of time to enjoy chicken and fixin’s. Desserts will also be available.

For $6 you can get half a barbecued chicken, or you can enjoy it with sides of baked beans and coleslaw for $10. The recipes used to make these goodies have a local history. The chicken barbecue sauce recipe is one used for the Guilford Fair Fireman’s BBQ for many years by Joe Jewett when he was a member of the fire department.

Weekend Creativity Series – Batik

Batik is a technique used to put patterns and artwork on to cloth. The basic idea is to draw on fabric with something, usually hot wax, that will resist colored dye. The fabric can soak up color, your artwork remains, and the wax gets removed in a final step to leave the finished fabric and pattern.

Hot wax, colored dye, hot electric irons. Danger abounds! Hard as it is to believe, we did this in elementary school art class. It was one of my favorite projects.

We heated up paraffin until it melted, we painted on our pieces of fabric with the wax, then dipped it all in RIT dye. When it was dry, we’d heat up our irons, place the waxed fabric between sheets of newsprint, and would iron the wax out of the fabric. The newsprint acted as a sponge.

Recently discussed enterprise fund budgets will be adopted at the next regular meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. New liquor license fees will also be up for adoption.

Police officers will be sworn-in, Selectboard goals will be discussed, public vs. private roads will be debated, grants and contracts approved, and plans for the West Brattleboro Fire Station will be reviewed on Tuesday at the Municipal Center on Main Street. You can attend in person and participate, even bringing up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

The Brattleboro Historical Society Presents: This Week in Brattleboro History Podcast – What for Art Thou, School?

It was 103 years ago this week that the largest headline in the Brattleboro Daily Reformer asked, “What Is A School For?” In 1913, the Vermont Legislature created a Commission to examine the state of public education in the Green Mountains. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching evaluated the Vermont school system and gave recommendations intended to improve education. Today’s BAMS students read a summary of the ancient report and reacted. Here’s the story.
