My bill just jumped 54% in a month without any rational explanation (I only made 19 calls for a total of 58 minutes for a month – all local.
A small part of the explanation was Federal fees and taxes which went up about a dollar.
I had an exciting squirrel Friday. It turns out that “our” squirrel – the one that hops over to say hello to us – is a female. And she’s a new mom, too!
Friday afternoon, one of her youngsters made the daring decision to follow her out of the nest for the very first time. It watched her hop to a branch, and did the same.
For the next three or four hours, the little squirrel alternated between sitting very carefully on the branch, and trying out some squirrel skills. Mom squirrel helped a bit, but also was tough and made the little one try things on its own.
Healing Our Divisions and Biases and Unifying Our Movements
Join the Climate Change Cafe on May 22nd at 7 pm for a FREE talk and workshop with Sherri Mitchell. This will be a special event held in the Main Reading Room, downstairs.
This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to look at the divisions and biases, including hidden biases, that have been built into our societies and ideologies. Participants will look at the divisions created by our shared history, the biases informed by that history, and the ways that they prevent us from joining our movements, with special emphasis on how colonization has impacted our thinking and the ways that we engage one another and the world around us.
Join us at Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, May 23rd at 7 pm as local author, poet, performer, businesswoman and community organizer Naima K. Wade reads selections from her first Chapbook, War is Over We Are Unbound. She will also share selections from her memoir, Elbow Dreams: Growing Up in Vermont During The Turbulent Late 1960’s.

SAXTONS RIVER, Vt. – The House Blend singers promise to “knock your socks off” in an a cappella concert at Main Street Arts Friday, May 18.
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. when the group of 15 experienced singers offers songs from five continents in 11 different languages.

Broad Brook Grange will present its 22nd annual Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 13, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Broad Brook Community Center in Guilford.
The all-you-can-eat brunch features eggs and omelettes, any style, made to order. Also on the menu are pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon and home fries, with Guilford maple syrup. On Saturday, May 19th at 2 pm, the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library proudly presents a reading of The Full Vermonty: Vermont in the Age of Trump, co-authored and read by syndicated political cartoonist, Jeff Danziger. Co-written with Bill Mares, it features writings from a host of local contributors who give their take on current themes of life in Vermont.
The public is invited to attend the Annual Meeting of the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library on Saturday, May 19, at 1:00pm. The meeting will be held in the meeting room on the top floor of the library next to the Children’s Room. The Friends of the Library are the main fundraisers for Brooks, and support many of our free, public events as well as our publicly accessible technology.

Performances of Joseph Robinette’s adaptation will be Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 13 at 2 p.m.
West Brattleboro – A two-woman show of paintings and sculpture by April Judd and Bev Larson has recently been installed in the foyer and other gallery spaces at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church. While each artist was featured in group shows during college and in their respective home states, this first major gallery show for them both continues through June 30.
The Arts Committee at All Souls invites the public to meet the artists at an opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. This gathering gives viewers a chance to enjoy both savory and sweet refreshments while discussing the creative process with Judd and Larson, who regard this collection as a history of their 13-year journey together. Both emerging artists, they fell in love with the unique and beautiful light and landscapes of Guilford, Vt., where they live and work as the Home Gnomes.

On Friday, May 18 the community is invited to explore the floodplain restoration of a 12-acre parcel of land along the Whetstone Brook at a pair of events. At 5:15 P.M., the Brattleboro Conservation Commission and Vermont River Conservancy will host a site walk of the property which is located at 250 Birge Street in Brattleboro. The public is invited to walk the site and learn more about the floodplain restoration project and site conditions from Sue Fillion, Brattleboro Town Planner and Steve Libby, Executive Director at the Vermont River Conservancy.
