I-91 Bridge Replacement Project: Week of November 2

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016.

Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Documentary Film On Brattleboro Red Cross Nurse In France 1914-1918 To Be Shown By Historical Society

An American Nurse At War is the title of a documentary film to be shown on Sunday, November 9, 2014, at 2:30 pm for the annual meeting and program of the Brattleboro Historical Society at the Brattleboro History Center located in the Masonic Center building at 196 Main Street, Brattleboro.

The film chronicles the experience of Marion McCune Rice of Brattleboro who went to France one hundred years ago to care for injured soldiers during World War I. Rice was born in Brattleboro in 1882 and graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1900 before attending Smith College and nursing school at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She was the sister of Howard Crosby Rice, longtime publisher of the Brattleboro Reformer, and spent summers at her home on Chestnut Hill.

BMH Offers Free Educational Program on High School Sports Injuries

On November 10, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital will be offering a free educational program titled “High School Sports Injuries: Prevention, Treatment and Care,” featuring Physician Assistants Maureen Mahoney, PA-C, and Wayne Temmen, PA-C. They will be presenting information that parents, teachers, coaches and athletes should know about sports injuries, including recognition of an injury and proper treatment so students may recover safely and quickly.

Tuesday night is election night, but the Brattleboro Selectboard will be devoting their evening energy to their regular Tuesday meeting. The meeting will be held in the BCTV studios on the third floor of the Municipal Center (elevator available).

Rather routine business on the agenda, including staffing level reviews of the Police and Public Works departments, some discussion of the FY16 budget, a liquor license for House of Pizza on Canal Street, and a hearing about plans to do some major building rehabilitation at five of the Windham & Windsor Housing Trust properties in town.

Man-made Global Warming is Worsening

BURLINGTON, Vt., Nov. 1 – A United Nations panel on Sunday is set to issue a major report detailing what a draft called “the likelihood of severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts” of global warming.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the new report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is expected to make the strongest case yet for decisive action to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

“The scientific community across the world is sounding the alarm. Climate change is real and it will have devastating consequences around the globe unless we act boldly and decisively,” said Sanders, a member of the Senate environment and energy committees.

On Saturday night, November 8^th Sounds True recording artist Yofiyah brings her Kabbalah Kirtan ensemble to the Vermont Jazz Center in Brattleboro, Vermont. Kabbalah Kirtan is a unique fusion of Jewish, Middle Eastern and Indian melodies with audience participation via call-and-response singing, along with musical accompaniment.

Close to 200 trick-or-treaters combed the Forest Square section of Brattleboro on Halloween. As is tradition, here’s your official 2014 list of costumes. Apologies to those we missed or got wrong, and thanks to all for all the original and entertaining ideas that kids had this year.

One notable trend: Star Wars is back. Other trends include parents getting more involved, nerds, and Robin Hoods.

Great jazz show from 1970 at the Festival de jazz de Chateauvallon featuring the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Prepare to go on a sonic journey.

Not sure why Europe reveres jazz from America seemingly more than Americans themselves, but I’m thankful for all of the Italian recordings, and here, French film of groups like this at that time.

American Bus Association Names Stroll Weekend One of North America’s 100 Best Events for 2015

The American Bus Association has named Brattleboro’s Strolling of the Heifers Weekend (June 5-7) as one of its Top 100 Events in North America for 2015.

Inclusion in the Top 100 list indicates that Stroll Weekend offers “excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world,” according to ABA.

Held annually since 2002, Strolling of the Heifers Weekend is built around an agriculturally-themed parade on Brattleboro’s historic Main Street, which is headed by 100 or more well-groomed and well-dressed heifer calves from regional farms, led by farmers and 4-H club members.
