Brattleboro Ballot Issues 2014 – Climate Change, and Adding More Sales Tax

Despite the few candidates on the ballot, there are two issues for voters this year when they get to the polls.

The first is non-binding consideration of adding a 1% sales tax to help property owners save money:

Should the Town of Brattleboro provide property tax relief and help defray the cost of Police- Fire facilities renovations by adopting a 1% local option sales tax?

Sanders Statement on State of the Union

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement tonight after President Barack Obama delivered his fifth State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress:

“I welcome President Obama’s focus on reducing inequality and helping working families in America. The American economy is not sustainable when so few have so much and so many have so little. It’s a moral issue and it’s an economic issue.

“The American people, no matter what part of the country they are from or what political party they support, want us to put millions of people back to work. They want to deal with income and wealth inequality. They want us to raise the minimum wage.

92nd Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition – The Road to Olympic Ski Jumping

Competition Slated for February 15 and 16 in Brattleboro, Vermont

BRATTLEBORO, VT. – The Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition slated for February 15 and 16, 2014 in Brattleboro, Vermont will feature more than 40 of the world’s top jumpers from the US, Europe and Canada. One contender is Chris Lamb of the Andover Outing Club, who won the 2010 and 2013 Harris Hill competitions and holds the hill record for the longest jump, 335 feet. Lamb says he’s looking forward to competing at Harris Hill and retiring the Fred Harris Trophy. The Fred Harris Trophy has only been retired five times.

Lamb is only one of a number world-class jumpers who have competed at Harris Hill—some as recently as last year. Of the recently announced male members of the U.S. Olympic ski jumping team all have competed at Harris Hill. This includes Nick Alexander, Nick Fairall, Peter Frenette and Anders Johnson.

Innovative Language School Launches in Brattleboro!

Express Fluency language school launches this week with a free intro class in Brattleboro.

Express Fluency (formerly Escuelita Spanish School) teaches Spanish (other languages coming soon) in the way our brains are designed to acquire language. Their classes are lively and engaging, and 100% comprehensible– allowing students to acquire Spanish naturally and effortlessly. Their methods resemble the way in which we call learned our first language. There will be a free intro class in Brattleboro this Thursday, January 30th at 5:30 pm at the Neighborhood Schoolhouse. A new beginner session begins the following Thursday, Feb 6th and runs for 7 weeks from 5:30-7:30.

The two main objectives of any building demolition in populated areas are, one, to break up and pulverize the building into small manageable pieces of dust and debris, and, two, to put the building debris into its footprint. That’s why demolition experts can pull down buildings that stand close to other buildings without damaging them.

Brattleboro Selectboard Has No New Candidates This Year – The List of Who Is Running

Unless something unusual happens, the same Selectboard members you see serving the town today will be the same ones serving Brattleboro in the next year.  No one is challenging them this year at the polls.

David Schoales will be running for the 3 year seat. John Allen and Donna Macomber are running for the two open 1 year seats on the board.

Lawrin Crispe is the only candidate for Representative Town Meeting Moderator.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting – Annual Town Meeting Warnings

Do You Have A Tripod Or Tripod Adaptor for a Smartphone I Can Have/Borrow?

I urgently need a tripod or tripod adaptor that will hold a Smartphone. I can’t find one in any local stores and the one I ordered online got lost in the mail. (I’m having really bad luck with this!!) I need this for a project that is due THIS FRIDAY 1/31/2014! So I need this in my hands absolutely no later than Wednesday (but tomorrow, Tuesday, would be better!!!).

Double Exhaust?

Maybe car folks know the answer. Why are there more cars and trucks on the road with double exhaust systems? Isn’t one expensive enough?

It seems that whenever I’m stuck behind one, the smell of exhaust is amplified with these double muffler and tailpipe combos.

Voting in Brattleboro’s Annual Town Meeting

Fellow residents of Brattleboro,

It has come to my attention that at least two, maybe all three, of Brattleboro’s three election districts each lack a few candidates for election as voting Representatives to Town Meeting this year.

There is one more business day — tomorrow, Monday, January 27 — during which one might pick up a petition at the Town Clerk’s office, get only ten (10) signatures of registered voters in their district, and turn their petition in by the end of the day (5:00 PM).

Cathy Barrows has been our Animal Control Officer for many years but she no longer is. Questioning at the Police Dept. brings “I don’t know” answers, as does asking at the Town Clerk’s office. Seems hush hush to me, but I think the public should know what happened to this loyal and knowledgable woman after so many years in the position. Does anyone know?
